Greetings!

It has been a busy summer at the Museum.  The new exhibit 'Roads, Rails & Trails' is still drawing visitors through our doors, the produce from the garden is coming in, and artifacts keep finding their way into our 'Treasure Room'.

Committees are working hard on events scheduled for the month of September, including the 4th Annual Founders Day Fair on September 1st and the first "Reminicing at the Museum" Cruise in scheduled for September 22nd.

If you haven't been by recently, drop in to see the new exhibit and browse Heritage Gifts!

Sincerely - Rebecca Suddeth, Executive Director

Antique Truck 4th Annual Founders Day Fair

will be held Saturday, September 1, 10am-5pm on West Main Street in Brevard presented by the Transylvania Heritage Museum.

Celebrate 151 years of Transylvania County history with crafts, music, dancing, food and more! Civil War encampment and, inside the Museum, family history displays as well as the current exhibit "Roads, Rails and Trails," honor the heritage of the County.  Opening ceremony is at 10 am, featuring our national anthem sung by Kit Owen.  Local musicians and the Sylvan Squares entertain throughout the day.

Proceeds from the sale of baked goods help support the preservation efforts of the Museum.

Volunteers Needed
As mentioned in last month's Notes, the Museum is in need of Docents.  Docents are a vital part of the operation of our Museum. Thanks to them, our Museum is open more often than most museums our size in all of Western North Carolina.  Docents are provided with training.

Also, the Museum needs volunteers to work on our Acquisitions/Special Collections Committee.  This job requires only a couple hours per month, and again, training will be provided.  Volunteers in this area will not work with the public, but will work hands-on with the Museum's Collections.

If you are interested in becoming a docent, contact Pat Childress at 883-7330.  If you would like to know more about Acquisitions, contact Rebecca Suddeth at the Museum.

childrenGardening at the Museum

The 4 H Club kids were really a busy crew as we all pitched in to harvest the labor of our hands.  All the beets, two varieties of tomatoes, half runners and bush beans, cucumbers, bell peppers, three varieties of onions, lots of fresh oregano, basil, parsley, sage and rosemary for drying, were harvested.  Of course, we did some tasting along the way and talked of cooking our cache of vegetables.

With great effort of pushing and prying, we tipped the tire stack onto a tarp to look for potatoes.  There were none in the top two rings, but some were found at the bottom.  The kids used the water from the new rain barrel, provided by the NC Cooperative Extension Office and installed by the Master Gardeners, to wash the beets and potatoes, as well as several pairs of dirty hands!

The two Russian Mammoth Sunflowers are coming into bud and are over six feet tall.  Be sure to stop by the Museum to see them!

Memberships

The Museum relies on Membership dues to keep us open and operating.  If you are not a member, please consider becoming one.  The rates are reasonable and can be found at our website www.translyvaniaheritage.org or by stopping by the Museum for a form.  If you are a member already, talk to a friend or family member and see if they would like to join as well.
