This 19th century American oil on canvas is in the style of Thomas Cole. Two boys fishing in a landscape are the central theme of this romantic landscape. Painters of the Hudson River Valley School sought a realistic portrayal of the American landscape and wilderness. The canvas has been professionally cleaned, revarnished and mounted on board and retains the fine period frame now restored to its full original elegance. Overall size with frame, 40" x 54". Apparently unsigned. Opportunity for serenity in life at $6750.
From a local estate collection, this Connecticut cherry Queen Anne highboy was brought to me with a provenance and family name inside one drawer. Proportion and style are excellent in this rare bonnet top form dating about 1740-1790.
The pediment arch rests on a central deep shell carved drawer with flanking shallow drawers on four long drawers with thumbnail molded edges. Below, a matching central shell rests over an undulating apron on well carved cabriole legs.
I guarantee that this highboy is not a marriage and that it retains the original shells and cabriole legs. However other restoration allows me to offer this beautiful period piece at a modest and tempting price. Please call for full details. Height 81", overall extreme width, 39 1/2".
