Social Networking and
Non-Profit Organizations
By Sandra Strelka, CPA
Social networking has revolutionized the way non-profits communicate. Whether it's via Face book, Twitter or LinkedIn, the majority of non-profit organizations are communicating with the world via some form of social media; currently Facebook is the most popular.
No matter what the size of your non-profit organization, social media can be an invaluable way to communicate your mission, your needs and your volunteer opportunities. It's not just the larger organizations that are using social media and benefiting from it. In many cases, the smaller non-profits are the ones generating more traffic to their Facebook pages and are seeing more "likes" on Facebook than the larger organizations, which has resulted in additional revenues.
It's easy to get started on most social networking sites. Here are some tips to consider when using Facebook:
- Make sure to have the "Find us on Facebook" connector icon visible on the front page of your website.
- Try to post to the page several times per week, even daily. Post announcements, comments, questions, and trivia. Try to add some interactive tools, like a game or quiz. These things will elicit comments and reactions from people.
- Don't repeat things that are already on your website; make your Facebook fan page unique.
- Set up a donation box so people can donate to your organization. Make giving easy.
- Post reminders for special events or fund drives that the organization is having. The more times that people see advertisements for something, the more likely they are to act on it. Post volunteer opportunities and ways to get involved. Follow up with the achievements after the event is over.
- Set up "causes" so that people can either "give" or "share."
- Include a "Join my List" tab to allow viewers to join your mailing list.
Social networking is becoming engrained into our lives, especially with younger generations. It is a great way to instantly communicate with hundreds and even thousands of people. It's fast and free - a perfect tool!
