| Dear Friends, Colleagues and Supporters: | |
The Aging in Place (AIP) community in Westchester continues to grow and thrive with two new programs set to launch this month - SPRYE and Aging in Place White Plains (see below). Congratulations to the board members of these two groups and all the volunteers who have shared their experience, talents and time to make aging in place a reality for residents in these communities!
Every month, AIP programs are growing and getting stronger. New activities are organized, collaborations are forged and members help members in countless ways. This newsletter is designed to keep you informed and connected to the Aging in Place community. We welcome your interest, input and most of all - your involvement!

| SPRYE and AIP White Plains Set to Launch | |
Residents of White Plains and Rye and its environs can look forward to aging in place in their communities with the launch of SPRYE (Staying Put in Rye & Environs) and AIPWP (Aging in Place White Plains) scheduled for this month! Volunteers from both groups have been working for more than two years on their respective programs and are excited to begin accepting new members.
AIPWP will launch on Sunday, September 18 from
3 to 5 PM with a reception at the White Plains Library. "No champagne across the bow, but AIPWP will open its

doors and begin to serve seniors in this city of 55,000, the county seat of Westchester," said Paul Schwarz, group president. "AIPWP will begin as an all-volunteer organization, with responsibilities shared by members of a steering committee, and will offer residents assistance with essential transportation, shopping, home chores and visits, and recommendations for a variety of other services. The organization plans to be accessible to all members of this varied community, and has set membership rates at $100 for an individual, $150 household, with lower rates available to those in need. AIPWP may be reached at 914-319-1609, aipwhiteplains@gmail.com, or on the web at www.aipwhiteplains.org.
Sunday, September 25 has been designated as SPRYE-day, the official kickoff of SPRYE. Seniors and friends of SPRYE are invited to a celebratory party at the Locust Avenue firehouse in Rye, from 3 to 5 pm, to learn about its many elder-friendly services and benefits and to take advantage of a special offer. "We'll be offering a special introductory discount on SPRYE-day, so it will be well worth your while to join now," said Tom Saunders, the group's Executive Board president. "Admission is free and there will be door prizes and refreshments," added Nancy Haneman, SPRYE Executive Board chair and organizer of the event. "We're all looking forward to meeting you on September 25, We've got some great activities planned for the fall." For more information, contact SPRYE at 914-481-5706 or visit the website at www.sprye.org. |

| Yonkers Collaboration Yields Health Dividends | Members of De Nosotros Para Vosotros (From Us to You), an Aging in Place group in Southwest Yonkers, are feeling a bit lighter on their feet these days thanks to participation in a nutrition and weight loss program conducted in collaboration with 55Plus, Yonkers on the Move and the Community For All Ages. Members that participated in the six week program collectively lost 20+ pounds and report feeling better!
All participants were overweight when they started the program in May and suffered from a variety of chronic health conditions including hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes and asthma. "I have one member with arthritis who lost 5 pounds and she tells me that she is not in as much pain any more," explains Daphne Morales, who coordinated the program at San Andres with Cathy Elser, MS, RN, director of 55Plus Yonkers. "I have another member, Estrella, who lost two pounds and learned how to better control her diabetes by following suggestions shared in the group."
While the nutrition/weight loss classes ended in August a morning walking club has taken its place. Three times a week, Daphne takes a group of 8-10 residents on a 2.5 mile loop around Van Cortland Park. She also has a multi-generational Zumba class set to start in late September and plans are underway for a second health and nutrition class that would include cooking demonstrations. De Nosotros Para Vosotros is an Aging in Place program developed in partnership with San Andres church in Southwest Yonkers. The health and nutrition program was supported by community partners - like 55Plus - and illustrates how collaborations among Aging in Place organizations can improve the quality of life for Yonkers seniors. |
