Every volunteer organization depends on willing and versatile volunteers. Every community is enriched by gracious members. We lost one of our best in the recent passing of Jan Vail in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

When Carl
Hummingbird
Carl and Jan in 2011
and Jan Vail were recognized as 2011 Friends of Madera Canyon Volunteers of the Year the applause was long and heartfelt. Whether working on fund raising, heading the Monday clean up, staffing the Visitor Information Station or helping with events they worked as a team.

One long-time member suggests that Jan and Carl may have been the most reliable volunteers we've ever had. Given the quality of FOMC people over the years that is high praise indeed. Jan was an especially fine advocate for the Friends, able to answer questions with a smile either at meetings or on the trail. We are fortunate that Carl plans a return to Green Valley in October, but Jan will be greatly missed.

Carl, their two children, and friends are planning an August 30th memorial service for Jan in a Steamboat Springs, Colorado botanical park.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of Madera Canyon.
