Focusing on...
Quantum Group of Companies

Not only has this St. Albert company been featured in a major magazine and recently won a St. Albert Chamber Small Business Award of Distinction, they also provide local chemistry scholarships, and their products are environmentally friendly! Claudia sat down with Tony from Quantum Group of Companies to talk about his business in St. Albert.

Why did you start your business in St. Albert?

St. Albert is where we started out,

Quantum Staff
L-R: Elda Daantos, Brendan Beier, Adam Carter, Gary Peacock, Vicki Beier, Shawn Chizen, Jennifer Rabenda, Tony LaGrange, Colleen LaGrange
it is where we do our shopping, go to church, and where our kids go to school. We wanted our business to be part of that community and contribute to that community. We started a chemistry scholarship at the local high school, supporting  the high school our children attended and will attend makes if very meaningful.

Who is your target market?

Our fire retardant products are used across the country to provide fire protection on plastic wood and structural steel. Our fire retardant coatings are sold through AkzoNobel, Cloverdale Paint, General Paint, and Sherwin Williams. Our industrial coatings systems are used around the world - ranging from the seal habitat at the Valley Zoo to a massive diesel fuel tank farm in Australia, you may even be standing on one of our products the next time you are in your neighbours garage. We just recently signed a world-wide distribution agreement with Dupont for our Precidium transit floor system. The flooring system is in place on the BART transportation system as well as most of the Edmonton Transit LRT cars. We also make a specialty product for Cantega called Greenjacket. It saves the lives of animals, especially large birds species and prevents costly power disruptions.

Quantum Group of CompaniesWhat makes your business different or stand out from others?

A strong focus on Research and Development, half of our staff are Chemists. Our laboratory facilities allow us to do some pretty comprehensive testing and evaluation. Since our inception, our focus has been on developing coatings with minimal environmental impact.  Recent changes in legislation have limited the amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that paint and coatings can contain.  However, our industrial product line are all zero VOC products. We attempt to not just meet legislation but make the best products with the least environmental impact possible. With our fire retardants we are a UL and Intertek listed facility, so that customers can feel safe in knowing that not only do we have very strict internal quality control guidelines, but there is external oversight as well.

What is your favorite thing about St. Albert?

From the first time I saw St. Albert as a University student, I was taken by the City. I especially like the historic Mission Hill and the Red Willow Trail System.
