Essentials Weekly Special Edition Ed Expo & Dealer Conference Wrap-up Nearly 2,000 people from the educational products industry came together under one roof for the Ed Expo & Dealer Conference, the premiere back to school ordering show, held this year in Baltimore, MD, March 21-23. NSSEA welcomed 88 first-time dealer companies to the show that featured a total of 292 exhibiting companies in 516 booths and 35 tabletops. Dealer Conference
This year's show included a number of new features to enhance the show experience for the attendees and exhibitors. One of the show's hits was the Dealer Conference held on Wednesday, March 21. The day-long learning environment included 12 sessions on four different tracks: marketing, best practices, curriculum, and trends. The Dealer Conference featured a "speed dining" format for the luncheon that proved to be not only an effective networking tool to meet new industry friends, but also allowed dealers to "talk shop" and share business secrets that they could use when they returned home during three separate courses with new people to meet at each setting.
"I LOVED the new Dealer Roundtable Luncheon," said Shawn Deignan of Teacher's Delight in Indiana. "We really discussed a lot and I took away lots of great ideas." "The Dealer Roundtable was great," said member dealer Jolee Bishop Beamer of The Learning Curve in Winter Haven, FL. "I got some great ideas from fellow dealers and was able to share some as well. Plus...the chocolate dessert was amazing!!"
Keynote & New Show Hours
Following the Dealer Conference was an industry-wide Keynote Address by Jim Brazell on Emerging Technologies and Business Strategies for Educational Markets. To start the show off with a bang, Baltimore's acclaimed Frederick Douglas High School marching band led attendees to the grand opening of the exhibit hall. This year's format included exhibit hours from 4-8 pm on the first day that featured a reception on the exhibit floor to allow people to get down to business and meet and greet their customers/vendors. For first-time exhibitor and member supplier Rylaxing LLC, the Ed Expo & Dealer Conference was not only a success, but also a launching ground for its new product. "The expo is a time to sell, but more so a time to show what your product can really do," Ryan Dickerson, owner of Rylaxing LLC said on the company's blog. "Now that we have support, we will continue to work hard in order to get this product off the ground, but given our success to this point, I know we can do it."
NSSEA Bucks
Another "home-run" at the show was the NSSEA Bucks. An exclusive program for NSSEA members, the incentive rewarded dealers attendees with money to spend on back-to-school orders placed at the show.
More than $25,000 NSSEA Bucks were distributed to member dealers to encourage shopping at the show, a direct benefit to the 100 exhibitors who cashed them into NSSEA for reimbursement at the close of the show.
"(We are a) first time exhibitor and we had a great show! Thanks for creating the NSSEA bucks," said a representative of Norwood House Press on NSSEA's Facebook page.
Innovative New Products Sixty companies presenting 108 entries participated in the 2012 New Product Pavilion. Sponsored this year by Educational Dealer magazine, dealers voted for their favorite items in the New Product Pavilion. At the close of the show, Ed Dealer's Tim Braden presented the top new products with glass trophies. Learning Resources' now!Board Portable Interactive Whiteboard Technology won first place, Bananagrams' Jumbo Bananagrams won second place, and MoH Band by Memory on Hand placed third. The winning dealer for the $100 drawing was David Pinkerton from The Art Store in Kutztown, PA.
In addition, dealers met on the last day of the show to share the "must-have" items from the 2012 Ed Expo. The favorites (listed on the right column) were shared from each of the Best of Show roundtable moderators over breakfast, leaving time for dealers to revisit booths they may have missed the first two days. "I learned so much here and I enjoyed meeting so many new people," said Carlesia Byrd-Collins, owner of C&C Office Supply. "Great products!!! I am learning about a whole new industry!" Evening With the Stars & Award Recipients At the NSSEA Annual Meeting on Thursday, March 22, new leaders of the association were elected and outgoing members were thanked for their years of service to NSSEA. Chairman Kevin Fahy, owner of Fahy-Williams Publishing, presided over the meeting and awards presentation. Former NSSEA Chairman Jamey Firnberg presented the $2,500 college scholarship to Hunter Winslett sponsored by Scholar Craft Products, Inc. in Birmingham, AL. Todd Merryfield, Chair of the NSSEA Retail Store Council, presented awards for the most creative, engaging, and dynamic booth design at the show to: Most Dynamic Staff: Ashley Productions Best New Exhibit Booth: Classroom of the Clouds
Outstanding Exhibit - Single Booth: Bonitas International Outstanding Exhibit - Multiple Booth: Incentive Publications
Most Innovative Booth: Plan Toys In addition to the Booth Awards, the Retail Store Council sponsored awards to two companies that demonstrated the very best in customer service based on nominations submitted by the dealer membership at large. The winners were The Pencil Grip and TREND enterprises.
Dennis Gosney, President of Wood Designs, presented the first annual Tim Holt Bright Start Award to the Jenkins County High School in Millen, GA. Dr. Kirkland spoke of his county's dire need for educational products resulting from the recent economic downturn. NSSEA President/CEO Jim McGarry then presented Dennis Gosney with the highest honor, the David McCurrach Distinguished Service Award, and outgoing Chairman Kevin Fahy with a ceremonial gavel plaque. "The marketplace for educational products continues to change and NSSEA is committed to transforming with it," said Jim McGarry, President/CEO of NSSEA. "We will continue to innovate and respond to the needs of the industry as we provide the venue to showcase lifelong learning."
