Only 7 More Shopping Days Left to Support Operation Christmas Child!

The Sierra Lutheran student body strongly urges members of the SLHS community, as well as the community at-large, to support the school's Operation Christmas Child campaign, organized through Samaritan's Purse, to provide Christmas gifts for underprivileged children around the world.

SLHS is operating a collection center for donations made for boys and girls ranging anywhere from 2-14 years of age. Gifts do not have to be wrapped; however, it is requested that a tag be affixed stating if the gift is for a boy or girl in the following age ranges: 2-4, 5-9, 10-14 years old. Gift suggestions include school supplies, toys, hygiene items, and other miscellaneous items such as t-shirts, socks, ball caps, sunglasses, hair clips, toy jewelry, watches, and flashlights (with extra batteries.) For more information Click Here.

SLHS has a goal of packaging a minimum of 75 boxes. For as little as $1.00 p/day from now until November 17 when SLHS will package and ship the boxes, you can bring joy to a deserving child.

Area Essay & Speech Competitions Offer Educational and Financial Rewards

Sierra Lutheran students have the opportunity to take part in two unique academic competitions sponsored by two area organizations.

The Fleet Reserve Association (FRA), a congressionally chartered, non-profit organization that represents the interests of the Sea Service community before the U.S. Congress, is sponsoring an essay contest open to 7-12 graders. Participants are asked to write an essay of no more than 350 words on the topic of "What Freedom of Speech Means to Me."

The FRA will award one area winner per grade. The contest includes a Grand National Prize of a $10,000 U.S. Savings Bond, with $5,000, $3,000 and $2,000 Savings Bonds awarded to the first, second and third place winners in each grade category. All regional winners are judged at the national level and receive a certificate of recognition. Other prizes are awarded at the branch and regional levels.

      ......................................................

Additionally, the Lions Club of Douglas County will again host a local speech contest in connection with the club's national competition. The local competition will take place in February at the Gardnerville Town Hall. Local winners will advance to a District-level competition, followed by the chance to compete on a regional level and, ultimately, at the national level.

For more information on the essay contest, please see Mr. Underwood. For more on the speech competition, please see Dr. Seddon.
