Is your Roofing System Manufacturers' Representative involved in your project?
THEY SHOULD BE!!!!
A good manufacturer's representative is involved in your project from beginning to end. They should be able to answer your questions or get answers to your questions, and be knowledgeable in the applications of their roofing systems ensuring that you are getting what you pay for. Every time you install a roofing system some manufacturer's representative is getting paid a commission for the material being used on that project. Are you getting the services that should come with purchasing that material?
Here are the steps to receive these services.
It is a very simple process. You contact the representative and ask them to meet with you to look at an upcoming project or an existing building. The representative will then either review the proposed project or inspect the roof on the existing building and give you recommendations as to which roofing system they feel would be most beneficial for your project or building and why they have recommended that system.
They will then assist you in writing the specification or if this is an existing building they will draft a scope of work for you to use in getting competitive bids.
Next, they will assist you with contractors. Representative's work with different contractors on a daily basis and will know which contractors specialize in which systems, which contractors do good work, and which contractors pay their bills; which is a good indication of the contractors financial stability and their ability to stand behind their work. They will give you the contact names and phone numbers of several competent contractors in order for you to competitively bid your project.
Once the contractors have been selected to bid the project a pre-bid meeting is scheduled with the manufacturer's representative, to ensure all parties involved understand the project that they are bidding.
Bids are then received and one contractor is chosen for the project.
A good manufacturer's rep will then oversee the project, stopping at the project site several times during the project to see that the system is being installed properly.
Once the project is complete the representative will do a final inspection to make sure all work has been completed to specification and a warranty is issued.

Quote from a local Architect
"See Dave's note below. He will be an awesome ally in making sure the client gets what was spec'ed and how it should be installed. He does a great job with the pre-con meeting (contractors and manufacturers all respect him) and is thorough in helping with inspections and punch list comments. He'll test the thickness of the top coating for you too.
I highly suggest you keep in touch and coordinate with Dave. He doesn't charge for the service unless we need full installation reports or installation monitoring." |
