Proceed with Caution |
Everyone loves to save money but in today's healthcare environment, cutting costs is more a matter of necessity than desire. Rather than allow the quality of care to suffer, hospitals typically look for ways to work more efficiently and with fewer employees. For this reason, one process that has been of interest is physician dictation. As a result, an increasing number of hospitals have adopted, or are considering adopting, speech recognition technology. ICD-10 could rival EMR implementation in scope, impact |
As far as big projects go, getting ready for ICD-10 might not seem like as big a deal as, say, installing an electronic medical records system, but healthcare leaders should not underestimate its importance.

| EHR Deployment Costs Approach $30,000 Per Doctor | |
Physicians are starting to embrace electronic health records en masse, according to a new survey by the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA). Two caveats to bear in mind: Many of the EHRs in use still have minimal functionality, and the MGMA survey excluded solo and two-doctor practices.
According to the report, Performance and Practices of Successful Medical Groups, 51% of groups of three or more physicians are using some kind of EHR. One form of healthcare fraud, known as medical identity theft, has its own staggering statistics: 1.42 million Americans were victims of medical identity theft in 2010.
