Five Ways to Connect at Good Shepherd
Church Picnic and Ministry Fair This Sunday, September 2 following the 10:00 a.m. service Wear your picnic clothes and stay after the service on September 2 for a potluck picnic with your church family! Hamburgers, hotdogs, drinks and table service will be provided. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. Women's Bible Study The Women's Bible study resumes their weekly schedule next Thursday, September 6 from 9:30 to 10:30 in the Library. All women of the parish are invited to attend. Joyce Roth will be facilitating a study of the book of Daniel. The Bible study is preceded by Morning Prayer at 9:00 a.m. in the Chancel. Contact Katherine Bihl or Joyce Roth for more information. Rector's Book Club The Rector's Book Club kicks off on Thursday, September 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the Library. Please join Fr. Brian for a discussion of Wendell Berry's novel Jayber Crow. The story unfolds slowly and beautifully as a failed preacher/town barber observes the rural Kentucky community of Port William during the middle years of the 20th century. Berry's prose is poetic and he is able to find deep wisdom in the ordinary and everyday. Contact Fr. Brian for more information. Monday Night Bible Study A complicated and fascinating text, the Bible has been a source of wisdom, humor, inspiration and history for millennia. But how well do we really know it? Join a small group to read the Bible together verse by verse. All are welcome! Meets in the Bride's Room (downstairs) at 6:00 p.m. Mondays beginning September 10. Click here for FAQs. Contact Fr. Dominic Moore for more information. Choir is Back in Session As the choir program gears up for another year of camaraderie, spiritual and musical education, and offering praise to God in many musical styles, we invite you to join us! All the choirs are presently open for enrollment. Much of this year will be used in musical and financial preparation for our tour to Italy and France next summer. New recruits this fall are eligible to make this trip. There are also opportunities for instrumentalists to share their talents with us at the 5:00 p.m. Sunday service. For further information, contact John Linker or call 859.252.1744.

It Makes Our Hearts Glad... ...that Education for Ministry is off to a strong start with two groups sharing the Library on Monday evenings to deepen their knowledge of Christian history and theology. ...that the Senior Lunch Bunch gathered 48 people together for food and fellowship in the Undercroft last Friday. ...that an outstanding Wellness Seminar kept the parish thinking healthy through the efforts of Deacon Lauren Villemuer, Terry and Karen Furlow, Jan Hellebusch and George VanMeter. ...that God is being "praised by happy voices" as the Good Shepherd Day School kicked off their fall semester this week. Children and parents flooded the campus, shedding tears and giving thanks as the kids returned to class! ... that the beautiful voice of Carrie Shirley enlivened our worship this past Sunday with heavenly melodies! "It Makes Our Hearts Glad" provides a way for members and friends to strengthen the fabric of our community by sharing good news or offer affirmations. The word "glad" is derived from Old and Middle English words meaning shining or bright. Add to the weekly "Glad Report" by email or by calling 859.252.1744. |
Online Pictorial Directory We want to significantly add to the number of photos we have of our members and friends in the Courtyard online pictorial directory. Hans Flueck will be set up on Sunday in the Loggia/Concourse area after the 8:00 service and before and after the 10:00 service to take pictures for anyone who doesn't currently have their image in Courtyard. The online directory allows is easy to use with the ability to customize your own information, search for information on other members and connect with the rest of the Good Shepherd family. If you're already received an invitation and set up your account, you can click HERE to login or find the link under the "About Us" menu on the church web site. If you desire access to the directory, please contact the church office and we will make sure you gain access to this valuable resource.

Thoughts and Reflections from Fr. Brian
A Collect for the Parish Almighty and everliving God, ruler of all things in heaven and earth, hear our prayers for this parish family. Strengthen the faithful, arouse the careless, and restore the penitent. Grant us all things necessary for our common life, and bring us all to be of one heart and mind within your holy Church; through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN.
Here at Good Shepherd, we are entering that time of year when Church School and Adult Formation resume, along with an increased number of Outreach opportunities and musical offerings. This Sunday's Ministry Day gives us a chance to celebrate this renewed energy and to make new connections in our parish family. Like so many other parishes, we start with a sense of hopefulness and enthusiasm that this year will be marked with renewal and growth.
On Ministry Day, we will share widely a Ministry booklet that will include many opportunities for formation and outreach and all the diverse ministries that shape our life at Good Shepherd. I commend the booklet to you and hope you will take time to discern how your gifts might be best used in ministry at Good Shepherd.
In the midst of all this activity, remember that all our ministries here are sustained by prayer, both personal and corporate. As we return on September 9 to a Sunday morning schedule of Eucharist at 7:45, 9:00 and 11:15 a.m., please note that we will continue to offer the Sunday evening Eucharist at 5:00 p.m., too. It is our hope that this additional evening service will allow others to find a place for worship at Good Shepherd who otherwise would not be able to attend a morning service.
During the week, we also have set aside times here at Good Shepherd for common prayer. On Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9:00 a.m. we will gather in the chancel for Morning Prayer. If you keep a personal practice of praying the Daily Office, please consider joining us at these times if you are able. We also continue to offer a Healing Eucharist on Wednesdays at 12:05 p.m. On the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month, there is a 3:30 p.m. Eucharist at Mayfair Manor. All of these services are open to everyone.
My prayer for Good Shepherd as our many ministries here resume is that they will all be means of transformation for those involved. Do not take on tasks here out of a sense of obligation but rather out of anticipation that something is about to happen, both in you and those you will meet because of the ministries here that call you. And throughout this season of anticipation, pray always.
Peace,
|
