Reflections and Thoughts from Fr. Brian

"O God, we pray for the gifts of ministry. Inspire our minds with a vision of your kingdom in this time and place."

Last Sunday evening, at the service of The Renewal of Ministry with the Welcoming of a New Rector, the above sentence was included in the prayers of the people. The sentiment in that sentence captures for me the significance of Sunday's evening liturgy. This moment in Good Shepherd's story is not about a new Rector. This moment in Good Shepherd's story is about OUR ministry together. Susan and I are excited to have joined you all in this place and time and to add our gifts to yours. Gifts for ministry come, however, to all of us in our baptisms. In the days ahead, I am committed to leading Good Shepherd to be a place where we all grow up in the love of Christ. That process of growing up, of maturing in the faith, can be nurtured by the many things that Good Shepherd already does well--music and worship, outreach, Christian formation, pastoral care and welcome. The invitation to maturity, however, is offered to all of us, not simply the ordained or professional church staff or certain lay leaders.

During the past several weeks, I have reflected often upon the fourth chapter of Ephesians. The chapter speaks of the gifts given in order "to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ..."  As we prepare to elect a new class of vestry this coming Sunday, prayerfully consider how we can all work together to nurture the gifts of ministry that already exist among us but have not yet been called upon. In Wendell Berry's poem The Wild Geese, he concludes by saying, "What we need is here." The spiritual gifts necessary to bless our parish life and the community beyond our walls is here among us, too. Now is the time for us to commit ourselves to supporting each other in the naming and exercising of these gifts.

As you consider those willing to serve us in the next class of vestry at Good Shepherd, I want to say now that I am grateful that these seven are willing to offer their gifts to us. Any of them would make very able vestry members. For me, it is another sign that this parish family is gifted with a surplus of servant leaders, both those who have been among us at Good Shepherds for decades and those just now putting down roots in our community.

Peace and prayers,
Brian+

Hearts Glad
It Makes Our Hearts Glad...

...that Abby Clayton received her Girl Scout Gold Award in a ceremony on June 3. The Gold Award is the highest award young women can earn in Girl Scouts, equivalent to the Eagle Scout award in Boy Scouts. Her project was renovating the St. Agnes' House community room. Abby is the daughter of Kim Edwards and Thomas Clayton.

...that last Sunday evening, we celebrated the end of our search process and the beginning of our new ministry together with Fr. Brian Cole and Susan Weatherford. It was standing room only in the nave for this wonderful event

...that Barbara Mostert's granddaughter Rachel Eyckmans recently completed her junior year at Bellarmine University in Louisville. In the 2012 Great Lake Valley Conference Indoor Championship track meet, her women's team won the conference championship for the first time. Her 4x200M relay team repeated its 2011 win and she placed second in the individual 60M dahs. She holds four school records in sprints.

"It Makes Our Hearts Glad" provides a way for members and friends to strengthen the fabric of our community by sharing good news or offer affirmations. The word "glad" is derived from Old and Middle English words meaning shining or bright. Add to the weekly "Glad Report" by email or by calling 859.252.1744.

Opportunities for Perfecting God's Praises on Earth

During the summer months we are offering a unique opportunity for the entire congregation to have a deeper understanding of the hymns you sing.  In addition to weekly articles with descriptions of the music, we are offering congregation-wide "hymn rehearsal" on Sundays in June and July from 9:30 to 9:45 a.m.  Simply turn up 30 minutes prior to the 10:00 service, find a good spot in the Nave, and you can join the choir in rehearsing the hymns for that service, punctuated by brief verbal descriptions or factoids about the music. The more you know, the more your worship experience will be enhanced. No reservations necessary; just turn up 30 minutes before the 10:00 service and prepare to be enriched by the glorious hymnody of the Church.

What:     Congregation-wide hymn practice

When:     Sundays from 9:30-9:45 a.m. (June and July)

Where:    Good Shepherd Nave

Why:       To further enrich your worship experience!

Music NotesSunday's Music
by John Linker

Sunday is the last service with our Holloway organ, as it will be removed later next week in preparation for other construction projects leading up to the installation of our new organ in January 2013. During the interim period we will be using the three-stop Steiner organ at the west end of the nave. Since this smaller organ does not have pedals, today's music features repertoire that fully exploits the use of pedals.

Samuel Barber's famous Adagio for Strings is a favorite among organ transcription enthusiasts. This work began its life as the second movement of Barber's String Quartet, Op. 11, composed in 1936 while Barber was spending a summer in Europe.  As one of the most moving pieces of the 20th century, it has earned itself a place in popular culture. It has appeared on several television and film soundtracks, most notably Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Oscar-nominated 2001 film Amélie, and has been performed for memorial services of dignitaries.  The organ transcription is by William Strickland and was published by G. Schirmer in 1949.

Bach's reason for composing the Fantasia in G Major (Pièce d'Orgue), BWV 572,may never be discerned, as the work stands unique in his output and is uniquely mysterious. In texture and temper its three sections could hardly differ more strikingly from each other, yet in conception they are clearly one. Further, although the work is in the major mode, it conveys such a sense of grief mixed with resignation- especially in the middle part, where five fugal voices interweave in unparalleled serenity and majesty-that causes some musicologists to speculate that Bach wrote it after the death of his first wife.

Whatever the truth may be, few works by any master reveal their consummate beauty more slowly or make greater demands on the listener. The title Pièce d'Orgue was adop-ted by Kenneth Gilbert and the editors of the New Bach Edition (NBA) in 1954, published by Bärenreiter, as a more appropriate reflection of the characteristically French orna-mentation and tempo indications in certain sources of BWV 572.
