The Rev. Brian Cole
Reflections and Thoughts from Fr. Brian

"Most people spend their lives trying to conjugate the verbs 'to want,' 'to have' and 'to keep'-craving, clutching, clinging-when all the Spirit wills us to do is to conjugate the verb 'to be.'"

Evelyn Underhill, the British mystic and writer on prayer, wrote those words in her book The Spiritual Life. I keep this quotation in my daily calendar and each year rewrite these words in the next year's diary. These words are always helpful for me to remember, but especially in the season of Pentecost, when the Church celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit and its ongoing abiding with us.

In Pentecost, we remember that the Spirit is doing a work in us all the time, despite or along with all our personal strivings and attempts at doing God's work without God's help.

During the season of Lent, Christians often will read books set aside as Lenten meditations or devotions. This year, during Pentecost, I have decided to go back and read Evelyn Underhill and her various works that emphasized the life of prayer and the Spirit's work in the world. During her time, Underhill was a kind of oddity, a laywoman often called on to teach clergy how to pray.

Underhill died during the month of June in 1941, on the 15th.  She died in the season of Pentecost. In her own last work, of dying well, she no longer craved or clutched or clung, but offered her life back to the Spirit that sustained her and that has helped the Church to remember the wisdom that Underhill offered to followers of the Spirit, both in her time and ours.

Blessed Pentecost!

Peace and prayers,
Brian+

Hearts Glad
It Makes Our Hearts Glad...

...that Graeme Lang and his father Gray Lang were recently featured in a Herald-Leader article about their flight to England in a twin engine Beechcraft airplane.

...that Gaye Mansfield, Elizabeth Ruiz and Anna Ruiz received the sacrament of Holy Baptism last Sunday.

...that Brett Eyckmans, grandson of Barbara Mostert, was chosen as first team All Tri State (Ohio/Indiana/Kentucky) offensive lineman by the Cincinnati Inquirer.

"It Makes Our Hearts Glad" provides a way for members and friends to strengthen the fabric of our community by sharing good news or offer affirmations. The word "glad" is derived from Old and Middle English words meaning shining or bright. Add to the weekly "Glad Report" by email or by calling 859.252.1744.
June Service Assignment Schedule

The listing of persons scheduled to serve on Sunday mornings will now be sent out via email rather than through the U.S. mail. A clickable link is sent every week in this newsletter, in the Preparing to Worship section. And, a listing will  also be posted on Sundays by the elevator near the church office and between the restrooms by the undercroft.

Please review the schedule in advance and note any Sundays you or someone in your family is scheduled to serve.

Chorister Promotions and Choir Notes
by John Linker

At Evensong on May 20, three of our choristers were promoted to their next levels of choristership in our Royal School of Church Music choir program. Isabelle Schueler attained Junior Chorister (light blue ribbon), Delia Whittaker attained Middler Chorister (dark blue ribbon), and Haley Barlow attained Senior Chorister (red ribbon). Haley has also been appointed Head Chorister of the Girls' Choir for the coming year.

The Royal School of Church Music was founded in 1927 by Sir Sidney Nicholson, who is also famous to us as being the composer of the hymn tune Crucifer (#473, Lift high the cross). The RSCM exists to ensure the highest standards of education and achievement in the field of ecclesiastical music. A specific curriculum of theory classes, singing assign-ments, and exams is followed by the trebles of our choir program. As you notice the different colors of ribbons worn by the trebles, the succession is light blue, dark blue, red, and yellow. In addition to "in house" training such as these levels of choristership, choristers (and adults as well) can train for and take exams for the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards as given by regional RSCM certified examiners. The Royal School of Church Music is recognized worldwide as the premiere curriculum for ecclesiastical music education, and through the years Good Shepherd choristers have attained the highest ranks in this training.

The parishioners of Good Shepherd rightly have a great deal of pride in our chorister program with its mission in outreach to the community. Many new Episcopalians have been formed by entering the Church through the choir program and then also entering into parish membership.

In any given parish, a choir program consists of persons who put a huge chunk of daily time within the building, and Good Shepherd is certainly representative of that. From a music theory class beginning on Mondays to six rehearsals occurring between Tuesday and Thursday, we run a bustling weekday schedule. The weekend schedule often includes a Saturday rehearsal and for some singers, three services on Sundays (on days we have Evensong and the like). All this is to illustrate that it's no small commitment to be part of our world renowned choir program. Every chorister who elevates in rank is recognized with great ceremony, and the office of each ribbon color represents the deep commitment and hard work of that individual.

All singers in our choir program are amazingly gifted people from many fascinating and different backgrounds. It is a continual pleasure to assist all at Good Shepherd in divine worship through the art of music. Thank you to all of Good Shepherd and within the great community who seek to perfect heavenly praises in our parish liturgies!

Organ Construction Progress Report
by John Linker, Organist/Choirmaster
We are about to enter an exciting period of transition with regard to our liturgical music and our organ project. On Sunday, May 20 our faithful 1970 Holloway Organ played its final Evensong accompanying a 27-voice choir for this service in canticles, psalms, anthems, and hymns. We will have three more weeks with the organ in place, then the week of June 11 the choir stalls will be removed for restoration and the organ will be removed and taken to the shop of Goulding & Wood in Indianapolis so that some of the pipes may be reused. Though it was originally thought the main organ would be operable by December, we now anticipate the entire instrument will be installed between January and March 2013, and the entirety of the instrument will be completed by next Easter. A dedication will occur within the Easter season 2013.

Following the removal of our Holloway organ, contractors will remove a section of the wall on the south side of the quire (above the present organ console) to create a tone opening for the new Swell division. Our present organ has three divisions: Great (the visible pipes on the north side of the quire), Swell (within the north quire chamber), and Pedal (also within the north quire chamber). The new instrument will have five divisions: Great (in cases on both sides of the quire), Swell (in the newly prepared room above the organ console, Choir (in the north quire chamber), Pedal (in the north quire chamber) and Antiphonal (on both sides of the Abbot Window on the west wall). The new organ will have a variety of sounds allowing it to authentically play all periods of organ music and choral accompaniments as well as more effectively leading congregational singing. Local organists are already hypothesizing that this will be the finest and most versatile organ in the Bluegrass.

You may have noticed a small three-stop organ at the west end of the nave, which has been in place for about the past month. This is one of the instruments we will use during the interim period between removal of the Holloway and the installation of our new Goulding & Wood in January. It was built in 1970 by the Steiner Organ Company in Louisville, and is co-owned by the Kentucky Bach Choir and the Lexington Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. It is on loan to us free of charge by these two organizations. In addition to this small positiv organ (as it is called due to its small disposition and portability) we will have the Bride's Room piano in the church for added variety.

Please click here to go to the Organ Project page (from the Music page) to access a link to photos of the organ under construction in Indianapolis. Presently you'll see photos of interior air chests and other parts, as well as discernible casework carvings, which mimic our rood screen in Good Shepherd. Soli Deo Gloria!
