 Organ Construction Update
Friends,
Below you will see an update from John Linker on the new organ at Good Shepherd with news about construction and installation. Along with John's words, I wanted to add my own.
I am grateful for how generous you all have been in support of this campaign. At present, $1.265 million has been pledged to what we expect to be a $1.5 million project. We have already paid $675,000 towards the cost of the organ. While you all have already begun to pay on your pledges, we are currently financing $196,000 of debt with a line of credit. So, your continued attention to the paying of organ pledges is vitally important at this time.
Please also know that there are still opportunities to join in the supporting of this campaign for the new organ at Good Shepherd. If you have not yet pledged, I would welcome a chance to visit with you.
This upcoming Pentecost Sunday, we will be invited to renew our baptismal vows and hear again the promise that God's Spirit continues to renew the Church in every age. We are called to be faithful stewards of Good Shepherd during this time. Your commitment to sacred music, outreach, Christian formation and hospitality to the stranger is evident. This can only be accomplished by the whole body working together in response to God's Spirit that continues to do a good work in us.
Peace,

Progress Report from John Linker, Organist/Choirmaster We are about to enter an exciting period of transition with regard to our liturgical music and our organ project. This past Sunday our faithful 1970 Holloway Organ played its final Evensong accompanying a 27-voice choir for this service in canticles, psalms, anthems, and hymns. We will have three more weeks with the organ in place, then the week of June 11 the choir stalls will be removed for restoration and the organ will be removed and taken to the shop of Goulding & Wood in Indianapolis so that some of the pipes may be reused. Though it was originally thought the main organ would be operable by December, we now anticipate the entire instrument will be installed between January and March 2013, and the entirety of the instrument will be completed by next Easter. A dedication will occur within the Easter season 2013.
Following the removal of our Holloway organ, contractors will remove a section of the wall on the south side of the quire (above the present organ console) to create a tone opening for the new Swell division. Our present organ has three divisions: Great (the visible pipes on the north side of the quire), Swell (within the north quire chamber), and Pedal (also within the north quire chamber). The new instrument will have five divisions: Great (in cases on both sides of the quire), Swell (in the newly prepared room above the organ console, Choir (in the north quire chamber), Pedal (in the north quire chamber) and Antiphonal (on both sides of the Abbot Window on the west wall). The new organ will have a variety of sounds allowing it to authentically play all periods of organ music and choral accompaniments as well as more effectively leading congregational singing. Local organists are already hypothesizing that this will be the finest and most versatile organ in the Bluegrass.
You may have noticed a small three-stop organ at the west end of the nave, which has been in place for about the past month. This is one of the instruments we will use during the interim period between removal of the Holloway and the installation of our new Goulding & Wood in January. It was built in 1970 by the Steiner Organ Company in Louisville, and is co-owned by the Kentucky Bach Choir and the Lexington Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. It is on loan to us free of charge by these two organizations. In addition to this small positiv organ (as it is called due to its small disposition and portability) we will have the Bride's Room piano in the church for added variety.
Please visit www.goodshepherdlex.org and go to the Organ Project page (from the Music page) to access a link to photos of the organ under construction in Indianapolis. Presently you'll see photos of interior air chests and other parts, as well as discernible casework carvings, which mimic our rood screen in Good Shepherd. Soli Deo Gloria!

It Makes Our Hearts Glad... ...that Leslie McCoskey and Gwenn Reho, our Wednesday office volunteers, completely refurbished the bulletin boards in the undercroft. They look great! ...that Good Shepherd Day School had 62 four- and five-year-olds "graduate" on Wednesday. ...that Bishop Chilton R. Knudsen was with us last Sunday! We welcomed her with a full house for the Bishop's Forum during Christian Formation and at the 11:15 service where 11 persons were baptized, confirmed and received. "It Makes Our Hearts Glad" provides a way for members and friends to strengthen the fabric of our community by sharing good news or offer affirmations. The word "glad" is derived from Old and Middle English words meaning shining or bright. Add to the weekly "Glad Report" by email or by calling 859.252.1744. |

Sunday's Music
The Feast of Pentecost is one of the rare times of the year where two seasons overlap, the season of Easter and the season of Pentecost (called Ordinary Time in some other Christian denominations) "Pentecost" means "fiftieth day," as it is the fiftieth day of Easter. After Christ's Ascension he sent the Holy Spirit "to guide, to strengthen, and to cheer." (Hymn 449) It is also called "Whitsunday" as it is a traditional day for baptisms, when those to be baptized wear white garments. In most European countries Pentecost Monday (the day after Pentecost) is a national holiday.
Music for Pentecost is marked by joy, but with a solemn invitation to the Holy Spirit to enter our lives. The exuberance of "Hail thee, Festival Day" (Hymn 225) is balanced by the sweet melancholy of "Like the murmur of the dove's song" (Hymn 513).
The Opening Voluntary is Robert Greene's Danza del Espiritu Santo (Dance of the Holy Spirit). Last year this piece won First Prize in the Region V Composition Competition of the American Guild of Organists, and John Linker performed it on the winner's recital in June 2011. Set in the lively meter of 12/8, this work features a penetrating rhythm and a gradual crescendo to a bombastic closing. After its composition, Greene decided it had a certain Latin American feel to it, hence the Spanish title. Greene borrowed some compositional ideas from several other pieces including Louis Vierne's Carillon de Westminster, and Maurice Ravel's Bolero. Bob Greene lives in Bristol, Virginia and has served churches of several denominations in Virginia, New York, and Florida.
This is balanced with the Closing Voluntary, Carillon-Sortie by Henri Mulet. Intended to imitate the ringing of church bells, an ostinato figure permeates the work accompanying the first theme while the second theme uses a descending fourth pattern, again emulating the sound of cascading bells. Mulet served Parisian churches St. Roch (for 10 years, where he wrote Carillon-Sortie) and St.-Philippe-du-Roule (just up the street from where former Good Shepherd Assistant Organist Zach Ullery now lives), and was a student of Guilmant and Widor. In 1937 he burned all of his manuscripts and moved to Draguignan in the southeast of France where he spent the last 30 years of his life in seclusion.
The Anthem Come down, O Love divine by William H. Harris takes on the air of sweet simplicity. Set in alternating meters of 3/4 and 4/4, the contour of the melody tends to hover around the fifth scale degree. The text is one of 92 hymns written by Bianco da Siena in the fourteenth century and translated into English by R.F. Littledale. Harris (known as "Doc H. by his choristers) was Assistant Organist at Lichfield Cathedral, then Organist of New College and Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford, and later St. George's Chapel, Windsor.
