The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Lexington, Kentucky E-News Edition for May 17, 2012
|
Reflections and Thoughts from Fr. Brian For the next two Sundays at Good Shepherd we will have great cause for celebrating. This Sunday, May 20, our interim bishop, Bishop Chilton Knudsen, will be with us during the Christian Formation hour and at the 11:15 Eucharist. During her annual visitation, she will preach and then confirm, receive and baptize new members into our parish life. On May 27, we will celebrate Pentecost (don't forget to wear red!) with additional baptisms as we remember what is often thought of as the Church's birthday, when the Spirit descended upon the early followers of the Risen Christ.
On that first Pentecost, divisions of language were healed with a common tongue of Good News. Prior to that day, the story of Jesus belonged primarily to people who had known him, walked and dined and heard his teachings firsthand. The Spirit of Pentecost allowed the Good News to go viral, to be communicated well beyond the landscape of Jesus' earthly ministry. At Pentecost, the Jesus story goes from local word of mouth to global faith.
For us, Pentecost is a chance to do more than remember that first movement of the Spirit. For this Pentecost, I would like to invite all of us to consider what the Spirit might be about to do at Good Shepherd this year. For the next year, who do we intend to be? How do we plan to gather, to celebrate, to grow deep in Scripture and study and prayer? What new ministries might emerge as we listen for God's next new thing here? I have already been humbled by just a few of the stories I have heard from Good Shepherd members who have abided here for many decades, who have given generously and lived faithfully in this place during times of grace and grief. What is important for all of us to remember is that those stories of those long-time members all had a beginning, a first day at Good Shepherd. During this Pentecost, let us be sure to attend to those entering our parish life now, hearing the story of Jesus, proclaimed by us, in a language that each newcomer hears as the language of home and welcome.
May you have a blessed Pentecost and the chance to hear God's Good News afresh this season.
Peace and prayers,

 Caring for One Another
The Pastoral Care Ministry will meet on Wednesday, May 23 at 7:00 p.m. in the Library. Fr. Brian will join us to share his vision for this ministry which was formed in October 2011 to provide a connection between our church family and those members who are unable to attend church on a regular basis. Our work has included visits to homebound parishoners, hospital visits, and visits to the Thompson-Hood Veterans' Center. Greeting cards are sent and recordings of Sunday sermons and the Black History Month Evensong have been provided as well as copies of Day by Day. Ministry members have been attending the monthly Eucharist at Mayfair Manor and most recently have teamed up with members of the Men's Breakfast group to assist the Elliott family with yard work and home repairs as Rick awaits a heart transplant.
As you can see, much has been done-and our work has been rewarding and appreciated-but there are still more needs to be met. We invite you to attend our meeting and learn more about our ministry.

Sunday's Music
The Seventh Sunday of Easter is also the Sunday after Ascension Day, hence the music reflects Christ's glorious Ascension. Bach's Prelude & Fugue in A, BWV 536, is one of his lesser-known works. It is thought the Prelude was written earlier than the Fugue with its opening arpeggios (ascending motives reminding us of the Ascension), its modest length (fairly short for a North German toccata) and pedal points. The Fugue is more harmonically developed with a fully-fledged ritornello, reflecting Bach's later Italian influence.
Bach's Prelude in C, BWV 547, also known as the 9/8 Prelude, weaves three themes together in elegant counterpoint. The piece can be analyzed in three sections as well, allowing this piece (as with many of Bach's works) to be considered as having Trinitarian references. In addition, 9/8 is a compound triple meter (3X3). Theme one is the ascending scale pattern, theme two is the perpetual descending 4th motive in the pedal, and three is the dancing 16th note pattern that happily unites the first two themes. Tension boils to a stunning cadence punctuated by rests with complete silence followed by a cadence over a classic tonic pedal point. Because of the ascending scale as the primary theme, many organists choose to play this piece for services around Ascensiontide.
Sunday morning's Anthem is Gerald Finzi's famous work God is gone up. Finzi sets the text of Edward Taylor with fiery music, the organ part characterized by fanfares played on reed stops. Themes of Ascension abound in this piece, from the opening motive, the sweeps of 16th notes in the organ part, to the key relationships and modulations. The alliteration on the constant "m" in the middle section (methinks, melody, mixing, making, more) pays homage to that consonant most associated with music, not only because it is the first letter of "music," but because it is the sound of humming.
Hymn 214, Charles Wesley's "Hymn for Ascension Day" matched with a Welsh tune, in which each line ends with an Alleluia, takes on an added quality of joyfulness. The Wesley's first published the text in 1739, with the Alleluias after each line added in 1852 and thence passed into Hymns Ancient & Modern. Originally the hymn had ten stanzas, but was paired down to four in our American Hymnal (first appearing in this country in 1865). LLANFAIR is a typical Welsh tune of this period, melodically strong based on the notes of the tonic chord G in a simple AABA structure.
