Celebrating Mother's Day It is a Mother's Day tradition at Good Shepherd to provide food to those in need in the name of our mothers and other special women in our lives. Again this year, donations can be made to fund our Blessings in a Backpack program, a feeding program for 60 students at Booker T. Washington Elementary School. It costs $80 for one student to receive food each weekend for the school year.
A special envelope will be inserted in the service bulletin this Sunday if you are interested in making a donation in the name of your mother or other special woman. Make checks payable to Good Shepherd with "backpack program" on the memo line. |
 Senior Acolyte Recognition
This Sunday we will be recognizing graduating Senior Acolytes Taylor Beegle, Ellie Fogg, Laura Greenfield, Clay Huguelet, Liz Samuel, and Amanda Stark. Among them they have given over 50 years of service to the church. Each of them will be receiving a sterling silver cross in recognition of those many years of service. As a parish we give them our heartfelt thanks and wish them well as they embark upon their future endeavors. |
Call for Vestry Nominations
Nominations for five Vestry candidates are now being accepted. Their term of office wil be slightly shorter than usual with service beginning July 1 and continuing through January 1, 2015 (2½ years). The election will be held on Sunday, June 10, at a special called meeting. Regular elections will be held in November at the Annual Meeting for another five Vestry members.
Please give consideration to whether you feel called to serve on the Vestry and nominate yourself or someone else whom you feel would be a worthy candidate. Click HERE to download a Vestry nomination form. Nomination forms must be completed and returned to the church office no later than Sunday, May 13.
The church's bylaws require that 'members of the Vestry must be parishioners sixteen (16) years or older who are communicants in good standing and who are regular financial contributors to the parish.' The bylaws also require that one year lapse before a former member of the Vestry can be re-elected. We are very grateful for the leadership and extended service period of Chuck Beal, Jack Brown, Kathy Gross, Guy Huguelet and Graeme Wilson.

Congratulations! "It Makes Our Hearts Glad" provides a way for members and friends to strengthen the fabric of our community by sharing good news or offer affirmations. Here I am Lord: Send Me! Reading Camp in Cameroon
Here I am Lord, is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go, Lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.
These words from a familiar song of worship have been on my mind lately and I would like to share why. I have been preparing to go to Cameroon for several months now so it seems strange to be explaining it as though for the first time, but my church is very important to me and I know I will carry with me the prayers and love of everyone I leave behind. I want everyone in my parish and my diocese to know about the Reading Camp mission to Cameroon because this is our Reading Camp and our mission.
Click HERE to read about why I am asking you to join me in this radical opportunity to serve children and build relationships with Christians around the world. |
Youth - Let Your Voice Be Heard Calling all youth in 5th grade and up: Good Shepherd is looking at youth programs and what our youth want from their church. Please let us hear from by completing this survey.
You can shape the youth program to be what you want, when you want, and how you want. We have to hear from you though! The survey only takes a very few minutes. Thank you! Contact Deacon Lauren if you have any questions.

 Vacation Bible School
Registration is now underway for Adventures on Promise Island, our Vacation Bible School that will be held June 4-8 from 9:00 to 11:30 each day. Children and youth are invited to learn about God's lifesaving love and promises through stories, songs, games and crafts. The cost for church members is $10 for the first child and $5 for each sibling. The cost for non-church members is $20 for the first child and $10 for each sibling. Family and friends are invited to the closing program on Friday, June 8, at 10:45 a.m. in the church.
Vacation Bible School Needs You! Adult leaders are needed to help make this VBS fun and informative for the children and youth that attend. Vacation Bible School cannot be done with you, and it is such a wonderful gift to our children. We promise you will have a great time! Sign up on Sunday in the Loggia. Contact Deacon Lauren if you have questions. |
Sunday's Music
May 13 is Rogation Sunday, a day where we honor all that is planted in the ground, and we give thanks to God for this great abundance. The word "rogation" comes from the Latin rogare, meaning "to ask" as we ask God's blessing on the earth. A common theme throughout this morning's music is the earth and all creation. This observance falls annually on the Sixth Sunday of Easter, a time when farmers are usually busy putting crops in the ground.
Louis Vierne became organist of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris in 1900, a post he held until his death in 1937. His 24 Pieces in Free Style follows the model of Bach's Well Tempered Clavier and Fischer's Ariadne musica with presenting pieces in all major and minor keys, each rising successively by a semitone. Twenty-three of the 24 pieces are dedicated to Vierne's students, and several of these students were killed in battle in World War I, including his brother René Vierne. Légende (set in the key of F# Major, a key considered difficult and cumbersome by many organists) is dedicated to Maurice Blazy. A study in iambic rhythm and set in 9/8, Légende is based on a pentatonic theme, and greets worshipers this morning with an atmosphere of prayerful reverence.
The Anthem is a simple setting of a Eucharistic text by Australian composer Clifford F. Boyd. Set in the key of G Major, the four verses of text reuse the same music, much like a hymn-anthem. Boyd served several Anglican churches in Adelaide, South Australia, and in 1965 founded the Quire St. Nicolas, a choral group specializing in English church music, and to whom this anthem is dedicated. The text gives thanks to God for the abundance of creation, including the bread and wine that is consecrated at the Eucharist.
Hymn 400 is among the most popular within the Anglican Communion, and also with other denominations. The text is from St. Francis's "Canticle of brother sun and of all creatures," and is often referred to as the first genuine religious poem in Italian. The English text was written in the meter of the tune LASST UNS ERFREUEN and was first published with this tune in The Public School Hymn Book (London, 1919).

Support St. Mark's with Your Kroger Gift Card Last summer Good Shepherd and St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Hazard, Kentucky, entered into a congregational partnership for the development of ministry and mission. We continue to be excited about the potential of greater outreach at Good Shepherd because of the presence of the Rev. Deacon Jeff Howe. We also look forward to increased involvement by Good Shepherd parishioners in the life of St. Mark's and their many ministries. We have agreed to support this by using funds generated through the Kroger gift card program. You can be involved by reloading your Kroger gift card often or by purchasing one to use if you aren't already doing so. Four percent of funds loaded onto Good Shepherd Kroger gift cards is donated back to Good Shepherd for the support of this wonderful ministry.
Cards that benefit Good Shepherd are available at the reception desk in the church office. Using the Kroger gift card is easy with no additional expense to you. Buy a preloaded card for $5 and "charge it up" at Kroger for an additional amount you expect to spend. Use it to purchase food, gas and household items. Thank you for remembering to use your Kroger card! |
