Reflections and Thoughts from Fr. Brian
"Without prayer the life of the Christian dies." Catherine Doherty

One of the real gifts that the Episcopal/Anglican tradition has given to the rest of the Christian story is the daily rhythm of prayer, captured in a monastic form, yet offered to every believer who desires to shape the ordinary by the sacred. The Daily Office of Prayer-Morning, Noon, Evening and Compline (Night Prayer) has for centuries given Anglicans a container of ancient and contemporary prayer for navigating daily life. While there are countless books about HOW to pray, the Book of Common Prayer is a great book FOR prayer, for beginning to pray or beginning to pray again.

Prayer can be silent, said, offered up in groans or sung out in praise with many voices raised. The Evensong at Good Shepherd on April 22 was a wonderful opportunity to experience prayer that is ancient and timely. In our Outreach, acts of service, charity and justice are best offered when they begin with our prayers offered on behalf of the least of these. Our work of Formation for children, youth and adults all flow from the disciples' request, "Lord, teach us to pray."

As another Pentecost approaches, my wish is that this upcoming season the Spirit will descend upon us again and enliven all the ways in which prayer nurtures our interior selves while also sustaining our active life.

Peace and prayers,
Brian+

Here I am Lord: Send Me!
Reading Camp in Cameroon
Here I am Lord, is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go, Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

These words from a familiar song of worship have been on my mind lately and I would like to share why. I have been preparing to go to Cameroon for several months now so it seems strange to be explaining it as though for the first time, but my church is very important to me and I know I will carry with me the prayers and love of everyone I leave behind. I want everyone in my parish and my diocese to know about the Reading Camp mission to Cameroon because this is our Reading Camp and our mission.

Click HERE to read about why I am asking you to join me in this radical opportunity to serve children and build relationships with Christians around the world.
Pastoral Care
Caring for One Another Within Our Parish Family

Good Shepherd's Pastoral Care Ministry continues to work with Rick, Julie, Rachel and Sarah Elliott. Rick was recently discharged from UK Hospital and is at home awaiting a heart transplant. The Food Ministry, Flower Delivery Team, Men's Group and Pastoral Care Ministry are all  involved with caring for the Elliotts.

In order to not overburden the Food Ministry, an online meal organization tool has been implemented. With this tool, you can sign up for dates that are convenient for you to deliver a meal. The family can also post dates for other needs as they arise. Besides meals, the Elliotts would be grateful for volunteers to sign up to stop by the house during the day (Monday-Friday) to visit with Rick as he is home alone during the daytime. If you can spend a little time (30 minutes to 1 hour) visiting with Rick, it would be much appreciated!

Click HERE to sign up to provide meals and/or visit Rick.

If you have questions or would like to help but don't want to go online to set it up, please contact Dianne Griffith or call her at 859.223.0253.

St. Mark's
Support St. Mark's with Your Kroger Gift Card
Last summer Good Shepherd and St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Hazard, Kentucky, entered into a congregational partnership for the development of ministry and mission. We continue to be excited about the potential of greater outreach at Good Shepherd because of the presence of the Rev. Deacon Jeff Howe. We also look forward to increased involvement by Good Shepherd parishioners in the life of St. Mark's and their many ministries. We have agreed to support this by using funds generated through the Kroger gift card program. You can be involved by reloading your Kroger gift card often or by purchasing one to use if you aren't already doing so. Four percent of funds loaded onto Good Shepherd Kroger gift cards is donated back to Good Shepherd for the support of this wonderful ministry.

Cards that benefit Good Shepherd are available at the reception desk in the church office. Using the Kroger gift card is easy with no additional expense to you. Buy a preloaded card for $5 and "charge it up" at Kroger for an additional amount you expect to spend. Use it to purchase food, gas and household items. Thank you for remembering to use your Kroger card!
Outreach Ministries
Outreach Fellowship and Communications
Everyone is invited to the next outreach fellowship and communications gathering next Thursday, May 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the Undercroft. Special guest speaker Christopher Skidmore, Executive Director of Mission Lexington, will talk about providing health care to low-income citizens in this community. Come to this informal time together to learn more about our active and vibrant outreach ministry. Refreshments will be served.

Class of 2012
Do You Know a Graduate?
Later this month, Good Shepherd will honor those graduating from high school, college or other institutions by printing a congratulatory list in our publications.

To make sure your special graduate is included, please email the following information to parish secretary Cindy McKee by Friday, May 11.
Graduate's name
Graduating from high school or college
If high school, college plans (name and location)
If college graduate, name of school and degree earned
Parents' names
Mother's Day
Planning for Mother's Day
It is a Mother's Day tradition at Good Shepherd to provide food to those in need in the name of our mothers and other special women in our lives. Again this year, donations can be made to fund our Blessings in a Backpack program, a feeding program for students at Booker T. Washington Elementary School. We provide food for students at risk of not being adequately fed over the weekend. Backpacks are discretely filled each Friday afternoon with easy to prepare foods obtained through a special arrangement with Meijer (e.g. juice box, oatmeal, canned foods). Last year the program started with 30 students and increased to 60 students in January 2012. It costs $80 for one student to receive food each weekend for the school year.

A special envelope will be inserted in the service bulletin on Sunday, May 13, if you are interested in making a donation in the name of your mother or another special woman. Make checks payable to Good Shepherd with "backpack program" on the memo line.
Acolyte
Senior Acolyte Recognition
On Sunday, May 13, we will be recognizing graduating Senior Acolytes Taylor Beegle, Ellie Fogg, Laura Greenfield, Clay Huguelet, Liz Samuel, and Amanda Stark. Among them they have given over 50 years of service to the church. Each of them will be receiving a sterling silver cross in recognition of those many years of service. As a parish we give them our heartfelt thanks and wish them well as they embark upon their future endeavors.
Vestry Nominations

Call for Vestry Nominations

Nominations for five Vestry candidates are now being accepted. Their term of office wil be slightly shorter than usual with service beginning July 1 and continuing through January 1, 2015 (2½ years). The election will be held on Sunday, June 10, at a special called meeting. Regular elections will be held in November at the Annual Meeting for another five Vestry members.

Please give consideration to whether you feel called to serve on the Vestry and nominate yourself or someone else whom you feel would be a worthy candidate. Click HERE to download a Vestry nomination form. Nomination forms must be completed and returned to the church office no later than Sunday, May 13.

The church's bylaws require that 'members of the Vestry must be parishioners sixteen (16) years or older who are communicants in good standing and who are regular financial contributors to the parish.' The bylaws also require that one year lapse before a former member of the Vestry can be re-elected. We are very grateful for the leadership and extended service period of Chuck Beal, Jack Brown, Kathy Gross, Guy Huguelet and Graeme Wilson.

Sunday's MusicMusic Notes

This morning's Voluntaries are the three movements of Bach's Trio Sonata No. 1 in E-flat. A "trio sonata" is normally thought of as a chamber piece written for two solo instruments with basso continuo. The bass line, being an independent contrapuntal voice is the third member of the trio. In a chamber setting one would actually expect four instrumentalists to participate: the two soloists, a cello or bassoon taking the bass line, and a harpsichordist filling in the needed harmonies. Bach wrote six "trio" sonatas, around 1727 conceived for pedal harpsichord or organ solo: the two hands, with pedal part, simply mimicked instruments with continuo, and were likely composed for the instruction of Bach's son, Wilhelm Friedemann Bach.  Trio Sonatas were nothing new in Bach's time, but his innovation was to have one player perform a "trio."

Malcolm Archer's Anthem, Come, my Way, my Truth, my Life is a delicious treatment of this famous text by George Herbert. Set in the buoyant meter of 3/4, the outer verses are in F major, while the middle verse is given to the men's voices alone and set in the third-related key of D major. Malcolm Archer has served as organist for Norwich, Bristol, Wells, and St. Paul's Cathedrals, and currently serves as Director of Chapel Music at Winchester College.

Hymn 704, though one of the less frequently sung hymns in our Hymnal, is certainly one of the most beautiful. The swooping, stepwise melody, artfully set in the bobbing meter of 3/4, invites a grand sound from a large singing congregation. The tune Hereford was written for the Three Choirs Festival at Hereford Cathedral in 1872 (a festival that continues to this day; the three choirs are Gloucester Cathedral, Worcester Cathedral, and Hereford Cathedral). The Wesley name appears with great frequency in pages of English ecclesiastical and musical history of the 18th and 19th centuries, and this hymn is a text by the great 18th century hymn writer Charles Wesley matched with a tune by his grandson, the 19th century composer and church musician, Samuel Sebastian Wesley.
