The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Lexington, Kentucky E-News Edition for April 26, 2012
|
Reflections and Thoughts from Fr. Brian This Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Easter, we hear the Gospel lesson from which Church of the Good Shepherd is named. "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." (John 10:11). This image of Jesus as a shepherd, who gathers and guides us and calls us by name, is one of the most ancient ways that early Christians depicted Jesus in art. This Sunday, we will celebrate Good Shepherd Sunday by venturing out into the Lexington community in order to "Be the Church." By gathering this Sunday after the 11:15 Eucharist for lunch and then a time of service, of outreach to homebound and other concerns and needs known, we remind ourselves of the Shepherd who has called us, who has sought us out, who has gathered and continues to gather all to his side. My prayer is that this Sunday will both be a day to gather at the altar and be fed AND then go out with grace and courage to offer God's love beyond these walls. Peace and prayers,

Supporting St. Mark's with Your Kroger Gift Card Last summer Good Shepherd and St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Hazard, Kentucky, entered into a congregational partnership for the development of ministry and mission. We continue to be excited about the potential of greater outreach at Good Shepherd because of the presence of the Rev. Deacon Jeff Howe. We also look forward to increased involvement by Good Shepherd parishioners in the life of St. Mark's and their many ministries. We have agreed to support this by using funds generated through the Kroger gift card program. You can be involved by reloading your Kroger gift card often or by purchasing one to use if you aren't already doing so. Four percent of funds loaded onto Good Shepherd Kroger gift cards is donated back to Good Shepherd for the support of this wonderful ministry.
Cards that benefit Good Shepherd are available at the reception desk in the church office. Using the Kroger gift card is easy with no additional expense to you. Buy a preloaded card for $5 and "charge it up" at Kroger for an additional amount you expect to spend. Use it to purchase food, gas and household items. Thank you for remembering to use your Kroger card! |
Be the Church! Make plans now to attend our annual Be the Church event this Sunday, April 29! Be the Church is a chance for each of us to live out our Baptismal covenant and share God's love with those around us as we serve the Lexington community. It's so easy to do! Simply show up in the Undercroft after the 11:15 service on Sunday, enjoy a delicious lunch together and then head out with your group to your particular service project. All of the projects will be coordinated ahead of time, so all you have to do is show up with a warm heart and hands ready to serve. There is something for all ages, from the youngest of children to veteran Good Shepherd parishioners. We can't wait to see you there! Questions? Contact Lauren Goodpaster, 859.321.7568. |
Call for Vestry Nominations
You may recall that we did not elect new Vestry members at last fall's Annual Meeting. Knowing that a new Rector was being called early in 2012, Bishop Sauls asked the current Vestry to remain in office through June 2012. It is now time to solicit nominations for Vestry candidates, whose terms will begin July 1 and run to January 1, 2015 (2½ years). Elections for five new Vestry members will be held on Sunday, June 10 at a special called meeting. Regular elections will be held in November at the Annual Meeting for another five Vestry members.
Please give consideration to whether you feel called to serve on the Vestry and nominate yourself or someone else whom you feel would be a worthy candidate. Click HERE to download a Vestry nomination form. Nomination forms must be completed and returned to the church office no later than Sunday, May 13.
The church's bylaws require that 'members of the Vestry must be parishioners sixteen (16) years or older who are communicants in good standing and who are regular financial contributors to the parish.' The bylaws also require that one year lapse before a former member of the Vestry can be re-elected.

Caring for One Another Within Our Parish Family Good Shepherd's Pastoral Care Ministry has been working with Rick, Julie, Rachel and Sarah Elliott. Rick has been a patient in the ICU at UK Hospital for four months and is awaiting a heart transplant. The Food Ministry, Flower Delivery Team, Men's Group and Pastoral Care Ministry have all been involved with caring for the Elliotts. In order to not overburden the Food Ministry, an online meal organization tool has been implemented. With this tool, you can sign up for dates that are convenient for you to deliver a meal. The family can also post dates for other needs as they arise. Besides meals, the Elliotts would be grateful for volunteers to sign up to stop by the house during the day (Monday-Friday) to visit with Rick. He will be coming home from the hospital this week and will be home alone as Julie will be at work and the girls will be at school. If you can spend a little time (30 minutes to 1 hour) visiting with Rick, it would be much appreciated! Click HERE to sign up to provide meals and/or visit Rick. If you have questions or would like to help but have trouble accessing or signing on to the website, please contact Dianne Griffith or call her at 859.223.0253. |

It Makes Our Hearts Glad... ...that Asia Luchtefeld was baptized on St. George's Day at the Cathedral Domain by Interim Assisting Bishop Chilton Knudsen. Asia is the daughter of Shawn and Kat Luchtefeld. ...that following the 7:45 service Sunday morning, the side garden was blessed in the memory of Carole Eastland and her faithful ministry to Good Shepherd. ...that three people responded with offers to loan a generator to Rick and Julie Elliott. Don Fishback delivered a generator to them, set it up, showed Julie how to operate it and brought along full gas cans to run it. Offers were also received from Cliff Denny and Sara Smith. "It Makes Our Hearts Glad" provides a way for members and friends to strengthen the fabric of our community by sharing good news or offer affirmations. The word "glad" is derived from Old and Middle English words meaning shining or bright. Add to the weekly "Glad Report" by email or by calling 859.252.1744. |

Planning for Mother's Day It is a Mother's Day tradition at Good Shepherd to provide food to those in need in the name of our mothers and other special women in our lives. Again this year, donations can be made to fund our Blessings in a Backpack program, a feeding program for students at Booker T. Washington Elementary School. We provide food for students at risk of not being fed adequately over the weekend. Teachers discretely fill the backpacks each Friday afternoon with easy to prepare foods obtained through a special arrangement with Meijer (e.g. juice box, oatmeal, canned foods). Last year the program started with 30 students and increased to 60 students in January 2012. It costs $80 for one student to receive food each weekend for the school year.
A special envelope will be inserted in the service bulletin on Sunday, May 13, if you are interested in making a donation in the name of your mother or another special woman. Make checks payable to Good Shepherd with "backpack program" on the memo line. |
Flower Delivery Ministry Needs Vases The cabinets in our flower room are almost empty. Vases put aside in your basement or garage, just waiting for the next yard sale, may be exactly what is needed. Instead, think about recycling them by bringing them to the church to replenish our shelves. The vases that seem to work best are about 8.5 to 9 inches in height. Bud vases are not needed at this time.
Last year our Flower Delivery teams deliverd 200 arrangements of flowers from the altar to members and friends of our parish.

 Books For Eastern Kentucky
One of the side effects of the tornadoes that struck Magoffin and Johnson Counties last month is the loss of school libraries and textbooks. The people of the Diocese of Lexington are invited to join together to help rebuild libraries in the affected elementary and middle schools. Both monetary and in-kind donations are needed. All monetary donations may be sent to The Episcopal Diocese of Lexington (P.O. Box 610, Lexington, KY 40588) and designated "Tornado relief book fund." Books are especially needed for grades K-6 and reading levels 0.1 through 6.9. Donated books may be brought to Good Shepherd and placed in the specially marked boxes in the Loggia. |
Sunday's Music
The Fourth Sunday of Easter is known as Good Shepherd Sunday as the imagery of Christ as our shepherd and we as sheep is a recurring theme. As this is the Church of the Good Shepherd, today is as close as we come to a patronal feast day, so we consciously program music that uses shepherd themes and pastoral images.
Charles-Marie Widor, whose fame lives mainly through one movement from his ten organ symphonies (the Toccata from Symphony No. 5), was a prolific composer and ardent French nationalist. The opening voluntary is his Pastorale from Symphony No. 2, a lilting movement in 12/8 reminiscent of a Romantic pastoral scene. Even in this seemingly simple movement, Widor's contrapuntal genius emerges, particularly in a brief trio section using canon between the right hand, the left hand, and the pedal. The closing voluntary is his Finale from this same Symphony. Like his more famous Toccata from Symphony No. 5, this finale uses a repeated pattern in the hands while the pedal has the main theme.
The Anthem The Lord is my shepherd is the sixth movement (of seven) from John Rutter's Requiem first performed in 1985. Set in the key of C major, upper and lower voices trade off verses of the text in unison, but join in harmony at "Yea, though I walk through the valley...." Simple unison is used again at the text "But thy loving kindness...." and a climactic moment occurs at "And I will dwell in the house...." Formerly Director of Music at Clare College in Cambridge, Rutter leads the group The Cambridge Singers which often makes recordings in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, where Good Shepherd Choir sang in 2009.
