Reflections and Thoughts from Fr. Brian
"See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God; and that is what we are."  1 John 3:1a

The above passage from 1 John is included in the lessons for the third Sunday of Easter. In light of the accomplished work of the Resurrection of the Christ, humanity is invited to live as reconciled people, as children of God. In such a world, where the Christ has already expressed God's love through the Incarnation and the Resurrection, it is our response that God desires. Live as children of God. In the context of a gathered Christian community, we are given numerous opportunities to practice the faith and live out God's reconciliation now.

In the short time that Susan and I have been among you, we have met many individuals in the community who do not worship at Good Shepherd, but who shared with us their impressions of our parish. Mostly, we have heard positive comments about Good Shepherd's rich history of music and outreach and the good will engendered by the Day School.  Others have commented on the beauty of our space, both the grounds and the architecture. All in all, Good Shepherd is described back to us as a "good church."

In this time, let me also encourage you to remember the Easter invitation we all have been given to remember our kinship to the Holy, our communion in the Body of Christ. The First Epistle of John goes to great lengths to remind us that love and the expression of Christ's love is the most important marker for a Christian community. Those other positive attributes connected to Good Shepherd or any healthy congregation mean nothing if they are not grounded in a Christ-like, sacrificial love. Such a foundation of love, a mature expression that is able to listen, to forgive, to endure with others in times of struggle and celebration, is given to us as a mark of Resurrection upon our lives.

God calls us children and expects us to live as children of God. God believes we are up to the task. In practicing the love of Christ with each other, our parish family matures and grows deeper into that kind of love.

You are a child of God. In a world able to find new ways to divide us from each other, live with the knowledge that God's love is eternal and it is the divisions made by us that will someday fall away.

Peace and prayers,
Brian+

St. Mark's
The People of St. Mark'
Last summer Good Shepherd and St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Hazard, Kentucky, entered into a congregational partnership for the development of ministry and mission. We continue to be excited about the potential of greater outreach at Good Shepherd because of the presence of the Rev. Deacon Jeff Howe. We also look forward to increased involvement by Good Shepherd parishioners in the life of St. Mark's and their many ministries. We have agreed to support this by using funds generated through the Kroger gift card program. You can be involved byreloading your Kroger gift card often or by purchasing one to use if you aren't already doing so. Four percent of funds loaded onto Good Shepherd Kroger gift cards is donated back toGood Shepherd for the support of this wonderful ministry.

Vestry Nominations

Call for Vestry Nominations

You may recall that we did not elect new Vestry members at last fall's Annual Meeting. Knowing that a new Rector was being called early in 2012, Bishop Sauls asked the current Vestry to remain in office through June 2012. It is now time to solicit nominations for Vestry candidates, whose terms will begin July 1 and run to January 1, 2015 (2½ years). Elections for five new Vestry members will be held on Sunday, June 10 at a special called meeting. Regular elections will be held in November at the Annual Meeting for another five Vestry members.

The office of Vestry is one of the most important ministries in the life of our church. The Vestry is responsible for the temporal affairs of the parish and serves to advance the spiritual life and mission of the church in cooperation with the Rector and clergy. Persons elected serve as active members of parish committees and other special positions of responsibility for the ministries of Good Shepherd.

Please give consideration to whether you feel called to serve on the Vestry and nominate yourself or someone else whom you feel would be a worthy candidate. Click HERE to download a Vestry nomination form. Nomination forms must be completed and returned to the church office no later than Sunday, May 13.

The church's bylaws require that 'members of the Vestry must be parishioners sixteen (16) years or older who are communicants in good standing and who are regular financial contributors to the parish.' The bylaws also require that one year lapse before a former member of the Vestry can be re-elected.

Keila Thomas
Good Shepherd's Seminarian
As many of you know, Keila Thomas has been in the formation process toward ordination to the priesthood for several years. This is an exciting and busy year in that process. In January she took the General Ordination Exam and passed all seven areas. On May 12 Keila graduates from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary in Chicago. She becomes a hospice chaplain for the VA Hospital on May 21 and will assist as chaplain at St. Agnes House.

Please hold the date of Saturday, June 30 at 11:00 a.m. for her ordination to the diaconate at Christ Church Cathedral. In August she is required to take a monastic retreat so that beginning in September she will become a curate at a parish in our diocese. Her ordination to priesthood is planned for late December or January at the discretion of the seventh Bishop of Lexington. Please continue to hold her in your prayers as The Church of the Good Shepherd sends her forth to continue God's work.

School library
Books For Eastern Kentucky

One of the side effects of the tornadoes that struck Magoffin and Johnson Counties last month is the loss of school libraries and textbooks. The people of the Diocese of Lexington are invited to join together to help rebuild libraries in the affected elementary and middle schools. Working with Reading Camp and groups like the International Book Project, both monetary and in-kind donations are needed. All monetary donations may be sent to The Episcopal Diocese of Lexington (P.O. Box 610, Lexington, KY 40588) and designated "Tornado relief book fund." To donate books appropriate for elementary and middle school libraries, visit this website. Books are especially needed for grades K-6 and reading levels 0.1 through 6.9. For more information or to arrange delivery of books please contact Bryant Kibler, 859.252.6527 ext. 113.

Sunday's MusicMusic Notes

Last week we heard the chorale Wir glauben all' an einen Gott from Bach's Clavierübung III, which in 1739 became Bach's first published organ music. Today's opening and closing voluntaries are the monumental prelude and fugue that form the bookends of Clavierübung III, the first and last pieces in the collection. Though Bach was not widely traveled, his music displays influence of various national styles. The Praeludium pro Organo pleno begins and ends in the French overture style using a dotted 8th-16th rhythm that characterizes this school. Italian influence is heard throughout the work with regard to form (ritornellos-a recurring theme played by the tutti ensemble pitted against duos and other textures) and the use of echo effects. German influence abounds with the use of fugue and with the simple fact that the feet keep so busy. No other national school demands more of the feet than the German school of this period. The word "pleno" in the title indicates the registration to be used: a plenum is the principal chorus of the organ, from the lowest principal stop through mixtures, to which reeds are occasionally added. The Fuga à 5 is one of Bach's most popular works today. Both the prelude and fugue abound with Trinitarian references. Both have three flats in the key signature. The fugue is in three sections, with the final being a rhythmically active, toe-tapping gigue in 12/8, the beat always divisible by three.

The text of Hymn 182 brings the reality of the Easter message into the context of the contemporary world. Brian Wren wrote the text in April 1968, ten days after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The acclamation "Christ is alive" opens several stanzas, affirming the historic event of the Lord's resurrection and emphasizes its timeless truth. The composer of the tune Truro has never been identified, but this name has adhered to the tune with unusual consistency, referring to the name of a city in Cornwall, though the tune has no known association with that place. Truro became the seat of a bishop only in 1876.

Hymn 492 is an old text matched with a new tune. The text first appeared in the 1892 edition of the Hymnal but was subsequently deleted until it appeared in Hymns III in the mid-70s. The tune was composed in 1966 by Christopher Dearnley on the date of birth of his youngest child. The tune name FINNIAN is derived from the name of a sixth century Irish saint, whose name was one of the names given to Dearnley's child. The descant and re-harmonization of the last stanza are by John Linker.
