The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Lexington, Kentucky E-News Edition for March 29, 2012
|
Reflections and Thoughts from Fr. Brian Years ago, I watched a film about the Old Regular Baptist tradition. The film came out of Appalshop in Whitesburg, Kentucky. The film describes the rituals and rhythms of the Old Regular Baptists in eastern Kentucky, including their tradition of an annual observance of the Lord's Supper (communion) and a foot washing service.
"I wouldn't take the bread and the cup if I didn't wash feet," an elderly woman says in a matter of fact way to the young interviewer. Her simple declaration has stuck with me since I first heard it and is always brought back to mind whenever Maundy Thursday approaches. At Maundy Thursday, we hear each year the story of Jesus' washing of the disciples' feet and his invitation for us to serve each other in the community of those who follow in the way of Jesus.
In the Episcopal Church, we speak of the two Gospel sacraments of Baptism and Eucharist. During Holy Week at Good Shepherd, we will have opportunity this year to celebrate Eucharist several times and will also be witnesses to baptisms at the Vigil. I would also invite you to be present for the sacramental act of foot washing. Whether or not you wash the feet of others or have your feet washed, the action is also a visible sign of grace, a sacramental chance to experience healing, connection and service.
Holy Week is also a time for the Church to follow a different calendar, to mark time with palms and the Stations of the Cross, with foot washing and an altar stripped bare. It is a time to sit in darkness, even as days grow longer. It is a time, finally, to celebrate Resurrection in a world still addicted to violence.
"I wouldn't take the bread and the cup if I didn't wash feet." My prayer for us is that we will all find moments next week where ordinary actions take on extraordinary grace and meaning. May each Eucharist remind us that God seeks to be known to us in the ordinary, in bread and wine, in acts of service and healing, in the vulnerable offering of tired feet for washing.
Peace and prayers,

Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday
Collect
Almighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take upon him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of his great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of his suffering, and also share in his resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

It Makes Our Hearts Glad... ...to see the Nave filled this past Sunday for worship services and the Undercroft packed for the reception welcoming the Rev. Brian Cole and Susan Weatherford to Good Shepherd. Many thanks to all who provided food and especially to Jim and Pat Johnson for organizing the outstanding reception! ...that Jackson Young and members of the Henry Clay High School bowling team placed second at the recent regional bowling tournament which qualified them to compete in state competition last weekend in Louisville. "It Makes Our Hearts Glad" provides a way for members and friends to strengthen the fabric of our community by sharing good news or offer affirmations. The word "glad" is derived from Old and Middle English words meaning shining or bright. Add to the weekly "Glad Report" by email or by calling 859.252.1744. |

Brian will be preaching, so come to Mission House at the corner of Martin Luther King and 4th Street and share the joy with our homeless and minimally housed neighbors at 3:00 that afternoon. Please donate simple desserts like cookies or brownies and come with us to offer our friends a warm meal, beautiful music, a church service and friendship. It's always a delightful way to spend any afternoon, but especially in the spring. |
