Greetings!Ron Pogue Photo 2

We often focus on big goals in mission and ministry: feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, rebuilding storm-ravaged communities, teaching at-risk children to read. But let us not neglect to do good in the smaller, simpler ways. READ MORE

I'll see you in Church!

Brian Cole
The Rev. Brian Cole Called as Rector
The Rev. Brian Cole has accepted the Vestry's call to serve as the next Rector of the Church of the Good Shepherd.

Brian currently is Sub-Dean of The Cathedral of All Souls in Asheville, North Carolina, where he has served since 2005. Brian has been a member of the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church since 2009 and also sits on the Council's Executive Committee.

A native of Missouri, Brian graduated from Murray State University in 1989. He then received a Master of Divinity from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville in 1992. Brian completed additional course work at the Sewanee School of Theology in 2002 and was ordained an Episcopal priest that same year.

In response to the call to become Good Shepherd's Rector, Brian said, "Susan and I are excited to be returning 'home' to Kentucky. The parish of Good Shepherd has a strong history of service to Lexington, the diocese of Lexington, Province IV and the wider Episcopal Church. I am humbled to serve with you and to offer pastoral leadership among you in this next chapter together."

Brian is married to Susan Weatherford who grew up on the campus of Berea College where her father, Dr. Willis D. Weatherford Jr., served as president from 1967 to 1984. Brian has one son, Jess, who is 16 years old and lives in Auburn, Alabama. Jess is an active member at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Auburn.

Brian's first Sunday at Good Shepherd will be March 25.

Music Notes
Sunday's Music
J.S. Bach is unquestionably the most venerated figure in church music, as emulating and revering his style for over 200 years since his death attests. He perfected every musical genre to which he put his quill. His chorale preludes vividly illustrate the character of each chorale in a number of ways and his praeludia are laced with moments of genius from beginning to end.

Schmücke dich, O liebe Seele, BWV 654, from Bach's 18 Great Chorales, features a soberly ornamented, but melismatic, chorale in the soprano, which alternates with the dance-like ritornellos of the two intertwining lower parts above a pedal bass. Gentle counterpoint between the four different parts creates an air of great serenity, a holy meditation on the Eucharistic rite. Bach's Prelude in C, BWV 547, affectionately known as the 9/8 Prelude weaves three themes together in elegant counterpoint.  Theme one is the ascending scale pattern, theme two is the perpetual descending 4th motive in the pedal, and three is the dancing 16th note pattern that happily unites the first two themes. Tension boils to a stunning cadence punctuated by rests with complete silence followed by a cadence over a classic tonic pedal point.  Because of the ascending scale as the primary theme, many organists chose to play this piece for services around Ascensiontide.

The motet Pater noster is a jewel from the Russian Orthodox tradition. This Latin setting of the Lord's Prayer by Rimsky-Korsakov suspends singers and listeners in the timeless beauty of harmonized Russian chant.

Hymn 438 has gained a great deal of popularity in recent years. The tune dates from 1919 (The Public School Hymnbook, London), and is named after one of the schoolhouses at Gresham's School, Norfolk, England, where the composer, Walter Greatorex, was Director of Music. Benjamin Britten was one of the distinguished pupils of this school in the early part of the 20th century. The text was written in 1961 by Timothy Dudley-Smith while he was serving the church Pastoral Aid Society, a home missionary society of the Church of England, and is a metrical paraphrase of the Song of Mary (Magnificat)

Hearts Glad
It Makes Our Hearts Glad...

...that Leroy Nealy, who faithfully looks after the Good Shepherd church family and property, found a wallet while downtown one day last week and turned it in at Sayre School. The school tracked down the owner who was very grateful to get back her wallet and its complete contents including driver's license, credit cards and cash.

...that Janie Catron was ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacons last Sunday! Congratulations!

"It Makes Our Hearts Glad" provides a way for members and friends to strengthen the fabric of our community by sharing good news or offer affirmations. The word "glad" is derived from Old and Middle English words meaning shining or bright. Add to the weekly "Glad Report" by email or by calling 859.252.1744.

Embracing an Adult Faith
Wednesday Evening Lenten Study
On Wednesday, February 29, we will begin a study that addresses fundamental questions that adults struggle with as faith matures. Embracing an Adult Faith: Marcus Borg on What it Means to Be Christian is a five-session DVD and discussion-based resource that will be used for this study. The sessions continue on Wednesdays through March 28. A light soup supper will be served each week from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m. followed by the class from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.

About the Study
Author and Bible scholar Marcus Borg invites us to join him in revisiting Christianity's most fundamental questions: Who is God? What does salvation mean? What place does Jesus hold in contemporary Christian faith? In this five-session, faith-formation resource, participants enjoy the rare privilege of witnessing Marcus in dialogue with a small, diverse group of adults as they honestly--and sometimes painfully--confront the big questions and work together toward authentic answers. Each session includes a 10-minute DVD presentation by Marcus Borg followed by interaction with the group. The program print resources are designed to help your small group "join the dialogue" in your own setting.

The study addresses fundamental questions that adults struggle with as faith matures. It can be used as a resource for personal reflection as well as small group experience. The five sessions include:
* God
* Jesus
* Salvation
* Community
* Practice

The participant workbook contains all the material needed for use by class participants as well as notes for the class leader to facilitate each session. Those attending the class are not required to have the workbook, but one can be purchased at the Cokesbury bookstore at Woodhill Center or from amazon.com. Sign up in the Loggia on Sunday or contact the church office if you plan to attend.

Famine
30 Hours Can Change the World and Ourselves
Students around the world loving God and fighting hunger. It's that simple. Every year, thousands of students unite to do the 30 Hour Famine. They learn about hunger--and then they do something about it. They raise funds. They experience hunger for themselves. Best of all? They help save lives. You can help banish hunger to the history books. Do the Famine.

Another child dies from hunger-related causes every 10 seconds. That's 11,000 kids dying every day. Even those lucky enough to survive hunger will feel its effects for a lifetime. Hunger stunts a child's growth. It leaves kids more vulnerable to disease and steals the energy they need for school. We can't just sit here and let it keep happening.

Children around the world and in our community need your help!

Our youth group is doing World Vision's 30 Hour Famine on March 2-3. We don't think it's right that thousands of kids are dying from hunger every day. So we're doing something about it. We're going without food for 30 hours to raise money so others can eat. Here's how you can help:

1. Pray. Ask God to bless our students as they overcome hunger.
2. Volunteer. Come join us during our Famine Weekend.
3. Give. Just $30 can help feed and care for a child for a month.

Youth: Sign up with Deacon Lauren.

Adults: We need adults to do the 30 Hour Famine as chaperones, Saturday morning drivers and  Saturday afternoon drivers. Cannot participate on Friday or Saturday or cannot give the 30 Hours? Then give money.  Make checks payable to Good Shepherd with 30 Hours on the memo line. Help us change the world. See or call Deacon Lauren or sign up in the Loggia.

Children: You can save a child's life by raising money to feed children. Every dollar counts. You are never too young to make a huge difference!
