From the Interim Rector
Greetings!
The experience of those first disciples set the pattern for those who would come after them. They did not volunteer for the mission. They were called. There is an important difference. Take Nathaniel, for example. I'll see you in Church!

Sunday's Music The season of Epiphany emphasizes that Christ is the Light of the world. Although "to thee light and darkness are both alike," we mortals generally like to see where we are going, and this theme of light during this season assures our way will be illuminated by Christ.
Hymn 126 (which features a new descant on stanza 5 composed by Henk Linker) is a paraphrase of Isaiah 9:2-8, appearing in the Scottish Paraphrases of 1781. The tune Dundee is known in Scottish hymnals as French Tune, possibly implying that the tune was modeled on a French Genevan melody or composed in what was thought to be the French-Genevan style. The tune is typical of British metrical psalm-tune style, however, with its "gathering note" (half note) at the beginning and end of each line. Hymn 543, a paraphrase of Canticle 11, was first printed in London in 1951. Written to celebrate the 80th birthday of the composer's mother, the tune was originally designed as a setting for the Charles Wesley text "Rejoice, the Lord is King."
T. Fredrick H. Candlyn was a Briton who emigrated to the U.S. to undertake ecclesiastical music in New York, first at St. Paul's Albany and later Organist & Master of Choristers at St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, Manhattan (where Good Shepherd Choir sang in 2008). His melodic and harmonic compositional language is in lines with the Wesley family and other very "tuneful" composers. One of his most beloved works, Christ whose glory uses a unison soaring melody for the first and final stanzas, while the second stanza is treated more intimately in four-part texture. Text painting occurs at words such as "unaccompanied" when the organ drops out, and chromatic modulations from the organ under-score the atmosphere of each moment.
This morning's Voluntaries represent the two different periods of organ literature. The Prélude à 5 (Opening Voluntary) is from Jacques Nicolas Lemmens' influential collection École d'Orgue, an organ method that taught his students (most notably Widor and Guilmant) in the ways of fluid part writing. Lemmens was a pedagogical great-great grandson of J.S. Bach (the lineage is Bach-Kittel-Rinck- Hesse-Lemmens). Knut Nystedt is a contemporary Nor-wegian composer who was a student of the American Aaron Copland. Nystedt's Toccata, Op. 9 (Closing Volun-tary) is an exuberant work fitting to close a service during this Epiphany season. The word "toccata" comes from the Italian toccare, which means "to touch." A piece with this title is typically a work demonstrating the player's virtuosity.

Choral Evensong this Sunday Please join us as the choirs sing Choral Evensong this Sunday, January 15, at 5:00 p.m. Incense will be used at this service.
Evensong is considered to be among the most valuable crown jewels of the Episcopal Church. This service is sung daily by most cathedrals and collegiate churches and countless composers have written music for the texts of evensong. The service originated in Archbishop Thomas Cranmer's first Book of Common Prayer in 1549. Cranmer compiled the canonical offices of Compline and Vespers to become the principal evening service of the Anglican Church. The service was slightly modified in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, which is the customary source of Evensong texts to this day. The recitation of the Psalter is one of the key components of Evensong, as well as the Magnificat (Song of Mary), Nunc dimittis (Song of Simeon), and a series of prayers chanted between Officiant and Choir.
