From the Interim Rector

Greetings!Ron Pogue Photo 2

There were two groups of pilgrims at the manger in Bethlehem, Shepherds and Wise Men. Both groups were on a journey of faith. You'll find both groups in church and synagogue, just as surely as you would have found them at the manger so long ago. It's a fact of human intellectual and psychological make up and neither group is preferred over the other.

I'll see you in Church!

Holy Eucharist
Solemn High Mass with Holy Baptism this Sunday at 11:15
In months that contain five Sundays we offer a Solemn High Mass at the 11:15 service on one of those Sundays, the next one being January 8. Owen Christian Ramsey, son of April and Christian Ramsey, will be baptized at this service.

During a service like this incense is used and the option of singing all of the parts of the service is exercised. A High Mass is traditionally considered the main community service of a worshiping body, since all liturgical activity can be heard because it is sung (i.e., to "heightened speech") instead of spoken by a single priest. While some parishes offer a high mass each week, other parishes may not have the resources to celebrate a high mass. The clergy at Good Shepherd are pleased to offer a variety of worship experiences, including the quarterly Solemn High mass.

**Incense will be used at this service**

Prayer For The Election Of A Rector ~ Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this parish, that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Music Notes
Sunday's Music
Sunday is both the Baptism of Christ and the First Sunday after the Epiphany, and as such our music reflects the annual convergence of these two events.

Hymn 497, reflecting the Epiphany, is originally a sturdy German chorale written by Philip Nicolai toward the end of the 16th century. The English translation by William Mercer enjoyed several incarnations before it arrived to its present state in our Hymnal.  This tune is known as the "Queen of Chorales" written by Philip Nicolai included in his Frewden Spiegel dess ewigen Lebens (Frankfurt, 1599), a volume prompted by the devastation of the plague upon the citizens of Unna in Westphalia. The harmonization is by J.S. Bach, who used this tune in his cantatas 1, 36, 37, 49, 61, and 172.

The Opening Voluntary, a few short but inspired variations on this chorale, is by Dutch composer Bert Matter, organist at St.-Walburgiskerk at Zutphen from 1969 until his retirement in 2002.

The text of Hymn 616, reflecting the Baptism of Christ and based on Psalm 72, was written by James Montgomery in 1821 to be used in a Christmas Ode at a Moravian settlement in England. The text has been in our Hymnal since 1826, and was first matched with this tune in The Hymnal 1940.  The tune name ES FLOG EIN KLEINS WALDVÖGELEIN translates to "There flew a little woodbird," the opening line of the secular words with which this music was originally associated. The tune is also called WOODBIRD in some hymnals, including H40.

This morning's Anthem, written in 1986 by Richard Shephard, is a setting of Charles Wesley's text Baptismal Prayer set in the ponderous key of F Minor. Shephard's career started as a chorister at Gloucester Cathedral under Herbert Sumsion, and today is one of the most celebrated composers in Britain.

"This program is a remembrance and a celebration of the life and vision of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Though Dr. King has long been taken from us, his words, actions, and promising vision should continue to live on within each one of us, and it is my hope that this musical narrative will help to remind us all of the progress that we have made and the work that still needs to continue on if we are to ever be truly free from the bonds of racism and discrimination"  ~ Whit Whitaker
