From the Interim Rector
Greetings!
The Beatles said Mary's response to the Angel Gabriel was "words of wisdom." Who would expect to hear wisdom from the mouth of one so young? The future of creation hung on the answer of a girl. Imagine all the angels looking down and holding their breath, wondering what she would say. We know her answer: "Here am I, the servant of the Lord. Let it be with me according to your word." READ MORE. I'll see you in Church!

The Fourth Sunday of Advent
Collect
Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, that your Son Jesus Christ, at his coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

A Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols One of our most beloved and cherished traditions is the annual Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols for Christmastide, which takes place this Sunday, December 18, at 5:00 p.m. Various leaders of church life read the nine lessons, in ascending order from a chorister to the Interim Rector. This year's service features both new and familiar Christmas carols. A reception provided by the Choir Guild will follow in the Undercroft. This timeless service is both a joyful and meditative way to usher in the Christmas season. Nursery will be available. |

 It Makes Our Hearts Glad...
...that Karen Workman Booth will be ordained to the Sacred Order of Priests today at 6:00 p.m. at San Jose Episcopal Church in Jacksonville, Florida. ...that Good Shepherd Day School students collected and donated 500+ pounds of food to God's Pantry. ...that the Vestry approved the contract with Goulding & Wood to build a new organ for our church.
...that Dominic Moore will be ordained to the Sacred Order of Priests on Wednesday, December 21, at 7:00 p.m. at Christ Church Cathedral. Please plan to attend this service.
"It Makes Our Hearts Glad" provides a way for members and friends to strengthen the fabric of our community by sharing good news or offer affirmations. The word "glad" is derived from Old and Middle English words meaning shining or bright. Add to the weekly "Glad Report" by email or by calling 859.252.1744. |
All About Deacons
by the Rev. Dominic Moore
The authors of the New Testament used the Greek word "diakonos," or "servant," to describe those who assisted others in times of need. Gradually this term evolved to describe a particular type of ordained ministry within the early church. St. Paul writes to his colleague Timothy in the middle of the first century and suggests that deacons must be serious, honest and not greedy with money in order to better serve the poor in their communities. Over time, the church began to understand the ministry of deacons as being Gospel-centered. This means that they preached the Gospel both with their lips in their lives, living out a calling to serve the less fortunate and bring the Good News of Christ to the world.
In our Sunday liturgy, the work of the deacon is expressed symbolically and through ritual action. The deacon is the minister of the Gospel, proclaiming Christ's words and deeds to the congregation. The deacon is also the minister of the table, preparing the altar for the Eucharist and assisting the priest, actions which highlight the deacon's calling to service.
The deacon also wears distinct vestments to differentiate their role in the liturgy. Familiar to the congregation of Good Shepherd is the deacon's stole, which is worn diagonally across the chest, but a new vestment will soon be making an appearance: the dalmatic. On special occasions, major feasts and other Holy Days, our deacons will now be wearing this special vestment, which looks like a tunic and at first glance resembles the priest's chasuble. Like many items of ecclesiastical dress, the dalmatic was once a commonly worn, every day, garment one might see on the streets of cities in the Eastern Roman Empire. We think the beauty of this special vestment underlines the importance of the deacon's ministry, both to the church and the world!
I have been humbled by my own time as a Transitional Deacon over the last six months. Although I am scheduled to be ordained to the priesthood on December 21, I will continue to live into the ministry of the deacon, which is a fundamental witness to all baptized Christians. After all, diakonos, a servant, is what Jesus taught us to be, to serve the world in its brokenness, to be the hands and heart of God to a planet that needs those healing hands and loving heart more than ever. The work of the deacon reminds me that "God's power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine." |
