From the Interim Rector

Greetings!Ron Pogue Photo 2

Advent is a time of preparation. The messages of the Hebrew prophets and of John the Bapitzer tell us that repentance is a necessary element when we are preparing for God's entrance into our lives. The call to repentance is a call to examine our lives and change directions in ways that open our lives for God to do something new. READ MORE.

I'll see you in Church!

The Second Sunday of Advent

Collect

Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Music Notes
Sunday's Music
The season of Advent reminds us to keep watch and to prepare in souls and minds a place for Christ to enter in. The key figure coming out of the wilderness instructing us to prepare is the rather eccentric John the Baptist. His theme of preparation is the dominant message of each of this morning's hymns.

Hymn 70 is a sturdy text and tune. The text, first appearing in 1976, is rich in imagery and language from Isaiah (40:1-5), Matthew (3:1-12), and Mark (1:1-8). Robert Powell, former organist of Christ Church, Greenville, South Carolina, submitted this tune to be included in the present edition of the Hymnal. The martial nature of the text is reflected in Powell's setting, especially through the use of dotted rhythms and melodic contours reminiscent of trumpet calls. Hymn 69 takes a bit more sentimental approach to John's message. The haunting and simple tune is from a Gaelic collection, Dánta Dé published in Dublin in 1928, and adapted by Norman Mealy for this text. Hymn 65 adopts a celebratory interpretation of John's message, set to a lively Swedish tune of remarkable rhythmic vitality. In use in Sweden for the past 200 years, this hymn was imported to the United States through the Lutheran Service Book and Hymnal in 1958, and later slightly modified and condensed to three stanzas for our Hymnal.

The Anthem sung by the Young Children's Music Ministry Choir at 9:00 is a setting of the plainsong hymn Conditor alme siderum, dating from the ninth century or earlier. The ancient beauty and simplicity of plainchant enriches the souls of all who sing and hear it. The Anthem by Sir John Stainer is a setting of Isaiah 52:7. This particular verse has been a vehicle for divine inspiration by many composers, and Stainer's setting achieves a sense of peace and serenity that beautifully reflects the text. SATB voices take turns singing the main theme and join together in a homorhythmic texture beginning with the text "that saith unto Zion." The summit of vocal range and dynamic is reached with "reigneth," followed by a short coda restating the theme in all four voice parts accompanied by Stainer's signature tonic pedal point. A London native, Stainer began his career as a chorister in St. Paul's Cathedral where he later became organist. He taught at Magdalen College, Oxford, and was a pioneer in the study of early music, notably of Guillaume Dufay. Queen Victoria knighted him in 1888.

Hearts Glad
It Makes Our Hearts Glad...

...that Penny Bass, Director of Good Shepherd Day School, and her daughter Katie, a student at UK, are speaking at the National TASH Conference in Atlanta this week. TASH is the largest Disability Education Awareness and Advocacy organization in the United States. They were chosen by the Supported Higher Education Program of the University of Kentucky to represent the state of Kentucky on behalf of high school and college age students with disabilities who want to pursue a college education.

...that Good Shepherd members and friends responded so generously to our God's Pantry Thanksgiving offering. So far, $2,045 has been donated to help feed hungry families in our community.

"It Makes Our Hearts Glad" provides a way for members and friends to strengthen the fabric of our community by sharing good news or offer affirmations. The word "glad" is derived from Old and Middle English words meaning shining or bright. Add to the weekly "Glad Report" by email or by calling 859.252.1744.

Update ~ The Campaign for a New Organ
As promised, the campaign for a new organ for Good Shepherd has remained quiet during our fall stewardship emphasis. With the successful completion of that emphasis, we are now ready to provide a progress report. As of today, we have raised a total of $782,955 toward our goal of $1.4 million. Several people have assured us that they will add their contribution to that amount by the end of this year. Our campaign committee, under the leadership of Dr. George Zack, will continue to work quietly until the entire amount needed for the project is committed. You can assist our progress toward the goal by your advocacy for the new organ.

At the request of the vestry, the organ committee, led by Dr. Joseph Jones, is in the process of refining the details of the new organ's design and negotiating a contract, which will be presented to the vestry at its December meeting. The vestry has authorized the finance committee to explore the options for financing the project and prepare to have funding in place when a contract is signed. If all goes well, the organ builder will be able to commence work in early January. We are told that the organ could be completed and in use by Christmas of 2012.

This is an exciting and long-awaited accomplishment in the ongoing worship life of The Church of the Good Shepherd. God continues to bless us and we will continue to glorify God in the music we make together at The Church of the Good Shepherd. As Saint Paul said, You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us; for the rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the saints but also overflows with many thanksgivings to God. (II Cor. 9:11-12)
