From the Interim Rector

Greetings!Ron Pogue Photo 2

Thanksgiving may be a teachable moment, when we can connect the dots that form a picture of family life and family identity. If we are too busy to gather around the table - at home or at church - maybe we are just too busy for our own good and the good of those whose lives are closely linked with ours. At home and at church, we need that time together! READ MORE.

I'll see you in Church!

The First Sunday of Advent

Collect

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Deacon's Diatribe
by Lauren VillemuerDeacon Shield

We all have different callings and different gifts. I am so grateful to God that He gave us different callings and especially different gifts. Nothing brings me more excitement than being in a room with people of different gifts and hearing them work together to create a beautiful idea, event or growth opportunity. It is through community that I can really feel the Holy Spirit moving.  READ MORE
Music Notes
Sunday's Music
Happy New Year! The First Sunday in Advent marks the beginning of another liturgical year, and today we switch to Year B in our three-year lectionary cycle. In observance of Advent, we celebrate with the annual Advent Procession at the 11:15 service. People who enter the Episcopal Church from other Christian denominations sometimes wonder why we do not sing Christmas carols throughout the month of December. Quite simply put, we do not enter the season of Christmas until December 24 at midnight (though we slightly bend the rules by having our Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols the afternoon of the Fourth Sunday of Advent). The express purpose of the season of Advent is to anticipate the season of Christmas, to prepare, to keep watch, and to cleanse our hearts and minds for Christ to enter in.

The Advent Procession symbolizes our movement from darkness to light, or to put it more crudely, our movement from ignorance to enlightenment through Christ. Music and poetry paint vivid pictures to aid in our understanding. After a distant beginning (I look from afar), we invite Christ's presence with "Come, thou Redeemer." Hymn 59 gives us a jolt: Hark! a thrilling voice is sounding.  Pastoral imagery appears in "Christ hath a garden" and "Jesus Christ the Apple Tree." Mary receives the surprise of her life in an unexpected visit from the angel Gabriel, echoed by the choir with "Ave Maria." An organ chorale prelude accompanies the lighting of aisle and altar candles, symbolizing our collective enlightenment, to which the choir responds with the chorale "Glory now to God we render" (sung in German). The Advent Procession replaces the Liturgy of the Word today at the 11:15 service, and then we pick up with the Communion Service as usual.

World AIDS DayWorld AIDS Day

An American Gospel
December Book Club
Come join us for Book Club on Thursday, December 1, at 6:30 p.m. in the Library. The book to read for December is An American Gospel by Erik Reece.

Erik Reece's grandfather was a Bible-thumping, fire-and-brimstone Baptist preacher. He loved to hunt and fish and explore the Kentucky woods, but for him, existence on this earth was about denying the pleasures of this life in preparation for the next. Erik's father was a Baptist minister, too. But at the age of 33-not coincidentally, Jesus' age when he was crucified- Erik's father violently took his own life, and Erik ended up spending much of his childhood in the care of his grandparents.

So, while Erik grew up with a conflicted relationship with Christianity, he also grew up with an acute awareness of a part of the country suffering ongoing economic, environmental, and even spiritual collapse. When he himself neared age 33, he found unexpected comfort and guidance in his intellectual hero Thomas Jefferson's famous Jefferson Bible, especially when he began to track similarities between it and the Zen-like message of the Gospel of Thomas. Inspired, he undertook what would become a spiritual and literary quest-to identify an "American gospel" coursing through the work of both great and forgotten American geniuses, from William Byrd to Walt Whitman to William James to Lynn Margulis.

Blessings in a Backpack community service immediately follows. We will be finished by 8:00 p.m.
La Posada
La Posada
Good Shepherd will host La Posada on Sunday, December 4, at 5:00 p.m. Children, families, adults and other interested people will gather at the Day School entrance on Sayre Avenue at that time.

La Posada is a Spanish custom that celebrates Mary and Jospeh seeking shelter in Bethlehem on Christmas Eve. The word 'posada' means 'inn.'  Everyone gathered will process around the Day School until the couple representing Mary and Joseph finds a safe place to stay. The event features carols and a story and concludes with a piñata, hot chocolate and traditional Mexican cookies.

Advent Storyteller Evening
Intergenerational Event: A Night of Storytelling
Join us on Friday, December 9, at 6:00 p.m. in the Undercroft for dinner and a Night of Storytelling. The youth will provide dinner to help supplement the cost of their pilgrimage to Scotland in summer 2012. The suggested donation is $10 (payable at the door), but donations of any amount will be gratefully received. Please sign up for the dinner by contacting the church office or on the sheet in the Loggia.

This evening for persons of all ages will feature stories of Angel Snakes, Dutch Legends, Legend of the Indian Paintbrush, Godly Play interpretation of St. Nicholas, and family stories about ancestors. Invite your friends and family members!
Ladies Holiday Tea
All Good Shepherd Ladies are invited to attend a holiday tea on Saturday, December 10, at 12 noon at Greentree Tea Room, 521 W. Short Street. The tea will be an opportunity to relax during the holidays and take a break from the hustle and bustle. The cost is $24.75 per person which includes tax and gratuity. Payment (either cash or credit card) will be made directly to Greentree that day.

To register, contact Christy Ellis or call her at 859-256-0042. Space is limited so register as soon as you can. The deadline to register is Friday, December 2.
