From the Interim Rector
Greetings!
As we approach the end of the liturgical year, the Sunday readings focus more and more on the events of the end of all time, "The Day of the Lord." Really, every day should be lived as if it were The Day of the Lord. Being prepared for God's appearance in our lives involves wise investment of the resources entrusted to us. READ MORE I'll see you in Church!

 Sunday's Music
Hymn 621 is sung fairly infrequently though it has been in Episcopal hymnals since 1892. The tune Rhuddlan is a Welsh national melody from the harp tradition, where it is known as Dowch I'r Frwdyr ("Come to battle"). Rhuddlan is one of the Welsh tunes introduced to English hymn singing in the English Hymnal (1906), from which this arrangement, probably by Vaughan Williams, is taken. The name is that of a town on the North Wales coast, the scene of many battles, where the ruins of a Norman castle indicate its strategic impor-tance. Hymn 541 has enjoyed great popularity since its original appearance in 1859. The broad unison melody by T. Tertius Noble (organist at St. Thomas Fifth Avenue, New York, from 1913-1943) was written to accompany this text when it entered our Hymnal in 1916. The descant is by Bruce Neswick, professor of organ at Indiana University and formerly organist of Christ Church Cathedral here in Lexington. This morning's Anthem is a short work by English composer John Rutter, whose zenith of compositional output occurred in the early 1980s. God be in my head is an excellent example of Rutter's stepwise, triadic approach at harmony, and lies very comfortably in each voice part. While his music is wildly popular here in the U.S., English audiences often find his music "excessively tuneful."
This morning's voluntaries represent the French Romantic school. Unfortunately our present neo-Baroque instrument is not the best vehicle for this music, but the music is so rich it would be a shame to prevent it from being heard entirely. Louis Vierne was the blind French organist who famously died while playing an organ recital at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Assisting him at the console was the young Maurice Duruflé, and the old organ bench is on display in the tribune (organ loft) at Notre Dame. Vierne's 24 Pieces in Free Style meets a demand for accessible organ music, and since the pedal part is optional, they can also be played on the then-fashionable harmonium. Théodore Dubois succeeded Camille Saint-Saëns as organist at La Madeleine in Paris. Marche Triomphale is representative of his style, which includes pianistic octave doubling, dramatic opera-influenced elements, and a stepwise cantabile secondary theme. |

Deacon Diatribe
by Jeff Howe
'Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.' This is a passage from the Gospel of Matthew Chapter 25 that many of you may be familiar with. I have read this passage many times in my life, but one day it took on a new meaning. It was this simple little sentence that started my call for the deaconate. As a deacon, I am called to be there for the "least of these". This simple little sentence is also an excellent guide for all of us to live by in order to live out our Baptismal Covenant and live as the Christians we are all called to be.
Fortunately at the Church of the Good Shepherd we have tremendous opportunities to live out our call, not only as deacons, but as lay Christians. We at Good Shepherd are blessed with an extraordinarily rich and varied Outreach Ministry Program. My last count suggests 21 different outreach ministries! This is the greatest dream of every deacon, to work with a church that expresses such compassion through so many ministries that are caring for the "least of these". Our ministries care for our neighbor that sits in our own pews as well as our neighbors on the other side of the world. Our ministries tap into the many different gifts that we have been blessed with in order to help the "least of these". There is work to be done by each and every one of you using the unique gifts that you alone bring to the table.
In the future, I will occasionally highlight some of the individual outreach ministries in this column. If you are unfamiliar with our Outreach Ministry Program and the many mission opportunities available to all of us, don't wait until I highlight them. Please contact me or one of our staff or clergy to learn more about what you can do to further our ministries and to help the "least of these."

 It Makes Our Hearts Glad...
...that we hosted Clergy Day on Tuesday and welcomed diocesan clergy and Interim Assisting Bishop Chilton Knudsen to Good Shepherd.
...that seven children received the sacrament of Holy Baptism last Sunday at the 11:15 service.
...that Bryan Lee Maddocks and Alexis Brooke Rothenberg were married on November 5 in New Jersey. Notes of congratulations may be sent to them at 45 Neal Path, S. Setauket, NY 11720.
...that UK News published a story about Art Hellebusch and his being cancer free. Click HERE to read the article.
"It Makes Our Hearts Glad" provides a way for members and friends to strengthen the fabric of our community by sharing good news or offer affirmations. The word "glad" is derived from Old and Middle English words meaning shining or bright. Add to the weekly "Glad Report" by email or by calling 859.252.1744. |
Provide a Thanksgiving Basket In just a few weeks we will be celebrating Thanksgiving with our friends and family, but unfortunately there are many of our neighbors who will not be able to do so. There are record numbers of requests for food from God's Pantry. Many families make a choice of either paying for food or paying for their rent, heat, utilities or medicines. Twenty-three percent of these families are working full- or part-time, and forty percent are disabled or in poor health and cannot work to provide for all their needs.
It is a Good Shepherd tradition to give monetary gifts to God's Pantry to help provide Thanksgiving baskets for many of these Kentucky families in need. If you want to help provide a meal, a gift of $40 will provide a turkey and all the trimmings, but any amount will be gratefully received. Special envelopes will be available at church through the month of November. Make your checks payable to Good Shepherd with God's Pantry on the memo line.

Box Tops for Education Good Shepherd Day School is participating in the Box Tops for Education fundraiser, and would like your help. The program is all about the difference one person can make. This logo above can be found on the box tops of hundreds of everyday products you probably use. Just clip them off, bring them to church, and deposit them in the special collection box that is in the church office. The Day School gets 10¢ for every box top collected. It's that simple! Money raised this year will be used to fund some additions to the playground, so it also benefits the church children as well. Thank you for your support!

United Thank Offering For more than 120 years people have used the blue envelopes as an extension of their thankfulness for God's blessings, great and small. As Christians we are called to give thanks for the many blessings God has given us. Each of the contributions is brought together to provide a fund that helps people in need. Good Shepherd is one of the parishes that benefited from a grant used to help establish a clinic for the working poor.
The Fall In-Gathering for UTO will be all of the month of November. The money that is donated will be combined with the donations of other parishes to help people in compelling human need. None of the money is used for fundraising or administrative costs. We can become God's hands and feet by supporting the ministry of the United Thank Offering. |
