Greetings!Ron Pogue Photo 2

To the saints of God, greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I called you "saints." Does that surprise you? If it does, perhaps it's because we've done such a good job of substituting other words to identify those who have been joined to the Risen Christ. Let's see how many I can name: members, communicants, parishioners, disciples, Christians, congregants, and, my least favorite, volunteers. There is more to being a saint than any of these words can possibly convey because, you see, only God can make a saint. READ MORE.

I'll see you in Church!

Nominating Committee
Rector Nominating Committee Update
It seems very appropriate that the Advent season is quickly approaching, as it is a time of waiting and anticipation. There is much anticipation and excitement about our upcoming transition with a new Rector at Good Shepherd. We are very pleased to announce that after much prayer and discussion, our finalists have been selected to move forward through this discernment process. Throughout the next two months, we will be meeting in person with the candidates to get to know each of them even better. We are incredibly happy with this group of potential leaders of Good Shepherd, and we are excited and anxious to move forward. As always, we appreciate your prayers and support. We need them now more than ever as we get closer to this important decision. Again, thank you!

All Saints' Concert
by John LInkerAll Saints

Our Annual All Saints' concert will be held this Sunday, November 6, at 7:00 p.m. As part of the rota of Good Shepherd's well-established choral traditions, this concert is an occasion to remember all who have gone before us through the performance of a major choral work. This year's work is the epic Requiem, Opus 9 by Maurice Duruflé. A suggested donation of $15 per person will be gratefully accepted at the door for the Choir Fund. An elegant reception will follow the performance in the Undercroft provided by the Choir Guild.

Though not prolific, Maurice Duruflé was one of the most important composers of organ and church music in the 20th century. The Gregorian chants from the ancient Missa pro defunctis, the Mass for the Dead, inspired his nine-movement setting of the Requiem. Many dramatic elements appear throughout the work, including jolting bass solos, ethereal treble lines, and colorful organ accompaniment throughout. During my 2009 sabbatical I had the privilege of staying for a week in the Paris apartment that housed Duruflé's own piano, an early 20th-century Erard, on which he composed much of his music. It was a great joy to open the large French windows and let the sounds of the piano spill onto the street below!  Music is one of the only art forms that require live performance to perpetuate its existence.

Pastoral Care
Called to the Ministry of Pastoral Care?
All people go through times of loneliness, struggle and heartbreak. Pastoral Care is the fundamental Christian ministry of presence - to be a loving and supportive voice and a listening and empathetic heart.

The Pastoral Care Team at Good Shepherd will endeavor to follow St. Paul's words to the  Romans, that a mark of a true Christian is to "Rejoice with those who rejoice" and "weep with those who weep" as we extend our own ministry of presence to this community.

Our first meeting will be on Monday, November 7, to discuss issues related to pastoral care in this parish. If you feel called to this ministry, please contact the Rev. Dominic Moore for more information.

Hearts Glad
It Makes Our Hearts Glad...

...that that many Good Shepherd parishioners are supporting our shared ministry with St. Mark's in Hazard by using their Good Shepherd Kroger cards.

...that the Rev. Dominic Moore and his wife Jesse are back after a few well-deserved days off.

"It Makes Our Hearts Glad" provides a way for members and friends to strengthen the fabric of our community by sharing good news or offer affirmations. The word "glad" is derived from Old and Middle English words meaning shining or bright. Add to the weekly "Glad Report" by email or by calling 859.252.1744.

Thanksgiving Basket
Provide a Thanksgiving Basket
In just a few weeks we will be celebrating Thanksgiving with our friends and family, but unfortunately there are many of our neighbors who will not be able to do so. There are record numbers of requests for food from God's Pantry. Many families make a choice of either paying for food or paying for their rent, heat, utilities or medicines. Twenty-three percent of these families are working full- or part-time, and forty percent are disabled or in poor health and cannot work to provide for all their needs.

It is a Good Shepherd tradition to give monetary gifts to God's Pantry to help provide Thanksgiving baskets for many of these Kentucky families in need. If you want to help provide a meal, a gift of $40 will provide a turkey and all the trimmings, but any amount will be gratefully received. Special envelopes will be available at church through the month of November. Make your checks payable to Good Shepherd with God's Pantry on the memo line.

Boxtops for Education
Box Tops for Education
Good Shepherd Day School is participating in the Box Tops for Education fundraiser, and would like your help. The program is all about the difference one person can make. This logo above can be found on the box tops of hundreds of everyday products you probably use. Just clip them off, bring them to church, and deposit them in the special collection box that is in the church office. The Day School gets 10˘ for every box top collected. It's that simple! Money raised this year will be used to fund some additions to the playground, so it also benefits the church children as well. Thank you for your support!

Ana Hernandez
HeartSong: Finding Our Voice
This music workshop for the Diocese of Lexington is led by author and musician Ana Hernandez. Whether you're in a small church with few resources, a larger place that would like to begin a new service, looking for a way to help your community find and build its collective voice, or play together and be transformed, HeartSong is the workshop that will enable you to begin to build a community by shared creation of sound and silence. We will listen deeply to the spirit within, reclaim the joy of group learning by rote, utilize repetition, and engage our oft ignored ability to harmonize on the spot. With simple songs, chants, and global song, we'll have a day of transformation and deep fun. Sing your way to your sweetest identity, individually and collectively, each person open to sharing more of who they are becoming and confident that the spiritual work they do to become their best selves will be honored and be integrated into the larger community. There will be drumming, movement, and lots of singing, all of which will enable your community to include absolutely everyone.
