Vestry Stewardship Statement
Vestry Stewardship Statement
Christian Stewardship is our personal ministry and thanksgiving for God's unconditional love and his gifts of joyful living, hope, and forgiveness. Through our stewardship at Good Shepherd, we strengthen our spiritual life with God and each other, receive his blessings, learn and teach life's important values, nurture friendships, and serve our Diocese and our community.

We acknowledge that faith without action is meaningless. We accept the principles of proportionate, regular giving of the gifts we have received from God. We endorse striving to reach, with God's help, the tithe (ten percent) which is the biblical standard for Christian stewardship.

All members of the parish family of Good Shepherd are needed to join together to experience God through their personal stewardship of services and giving.

Therefore, the Clergy and Vestry call on all the members of Good Shepherd to acknowledge their responsibilities by offering their money, as well as their time and talents, to sustain the Church and create a future that will assure innovative and resourceful leadership and provide for the continued growth of programs offering spiritual enrichment, education, and outreach.
Prayers of the People

Prayer For The Election Of A Rector ~ Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this parish, that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries: through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Music Notes
Sunday's Music
With Halloween being Monday, on Sunday we will be treated to some "spooky" organ music for the Closing Voluntary, Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. It is one of few pieces in the organ repertoire that has become wildly embraced by pop culture.  From phone ring tones to movie sound tracks, this work has received recognition around the world. In the 1980s, however, Bach's authorship of this work was disputed, and there are doubts to this day as to whether this work is actually an original organ work by Bach. No original autograph exists of the piece (which is common), but other elements of the work are very different from Bach's usual style. For instance, there is a lot of octave doubling in the beginning of the piece, which is highly unusual. In the Fugue there is an entrance of the subject for the pedals alone (without supportive counterpoint played in the hands), which is also extremely rare of music from this time period.  It may have been the work of a post-1750 composer writing in the style of earlier masters. Regardless of dubious authorship, it's a rich work filled with complex harmonies and intricate counterpoint.

By way of contrast, a Toccata and Fantasia by Pachelbel are played for the Opening Voluntary. Pachelbel was a prolific south German composer one generation before Bach. His famous "Canon in D" provides his greatest fame today, but that work is of minor importance when compared to his vast oeuvre of organ and choral music. The Toccata in g and Fantasia in E-flat are a representative summary of Pachelbel's style, which features fluid voice writing and a primitively simple pedal part, reflecting the small pedal divisions of south German organs.

The Choir's motet Psalm 150 by César Franck also begins with a somewhat spooky organ introduct-tion. Composed in 1884, the chromatic 25-measure introduction ushers in muted iterations of "halleluiah" by the four voices of the choir. The main theme of the piece, first sung by the gentlemen and later joined by upper voices, is among the most haunting melodies in church music. Belgian by birth, Franck is considered the pivotal figure of 19th century French organ music, and was organist at Ste Clotilde in Paris.

Pastoral Care
Called to the Ministry of Pastoral Care?
All people go through times of loneliness, struggle and heartbreak. Pastoral Care is the fundamental Christian ministry of presence - to be a loving and supportive voice and a listening and empathetic heart.

The Pastoral Care Team at Good Shepherd will endeavor to follow St. Paul's words to the  Romans, that a mark of a true Christian is to "Rejoice with those who rejoice" and "weep with those who weep" as we extend our own ministry of presence to this community.

Our first meeting will be in early November to discuss issues related to pastoral care in this parish. If you feel called to this ministry, please contact the Rev. Dominic Moore for more information.
November Book ClubCutting for Stones
Everyone is invited to join us for Book Club on Thursday, November 3, at
6:30 p.m. in the Good Shepherd Library. The book to read for the November meeting is by Abraham Verghese.

An epic novel that spans continents and generations, this is an unforgettable story of love and betrayal, compassion and redemption, exile and home that unfolds across five decades in India, Ethiopia, and America. In it, renowned physician Abraham Verghese has given us a remarkable reading experience that explores the lives of a memorable cast of characters, many of them doctors; the insight the novel offers into the world of medicine, along with its wealth of precise detail about how doctors work, is unparalleled in American fiction.
Boxtops for Education
Box Tops for Education
Good Shepherd Day School is participating in the Box Tops for Education fundraiser, and would like your help. The program is all about the difference one person can make. This logo above can be found on the box tops of hundreds of everyday products you probably use. Just clip them off, bring them to church, and deposit them in the special collection box that is in the church office. The Day School gets 10¢ for every box top collected. It's that simple! Money raised this year will be used to fund some additions to the playground, so it also benefits the church children as well. Thank you for your support!

Ana Hernandez
HeartSong: Finding Our Voice
This music workshop for the Diocese of Lexington is led by author and musician Ana Hernandez. Whether you're in a small church with few resources, a larger place that would like to begin a new service, looking for a way to help your community find and build its collective voice, or play together and be transformed, HeartSong is the workshop that will enable you to begin to build a community by shared creation of sound and silence. We will listen deeply to the spirit within, reclaim the joy of group learning by rote, utilize repetition, and engage our oft ignored ability to harmonize on the spot. With simple songs, chants, and global song, we'll have a day of transformation and deep fun. Sing your way to your sweetest identity, individually and collectively, each person open to sharing more of who they are becoming and confident that the spiritual work they do to become their best selves will be honored and be integrated into the larger community. There will be drumming, movement, and lots of singing, all of which will enable your community to include absolutely everyone.
