From the Interim Rector
Greetings!
Jesus' summary of the Law calls us to give God the opportunity to use our lives and all the blessings that have been entrusted to us in ways that become evidence of our love for God and for our neighbor. And, through the miracles that God will perform in our lives, we discover that it is also the best way of loving ourselves. READ MORE.
I'll see you in Church!

Vestry Stewardship Statement Christian Stewardship is our personal ministry and thanksgiving for God's unconditional love and his gifts of joyful living, hope, and forgiveness. Through our stewardship at Good Shepherd, we strengthen our spiritual life with God and each other, receive his blessings, learn and teach life's important values, nurture friendships, and serve our Diocese and our community.
We acknowledge that faith without action is meaningless. We accept the principles of proportionate, regular giving of the gifts we have received from God. We endorse striving to reach, with God's help, the tithe (ten percent) which is the biblical standard for Christian stewardship.
All members of the parish family of Good Shepherd are needed to join together to experience God through their personal stewardship of services and giving.
Therefore, the Clergy and Vestry call on all the members of Good Shepherd to acknowledge their responsibilities by offering their money, as well as their time and talents, to sustain the Church and create a future that will assure innovative and resourceful leadership and provide for the continued growth of programs offering spiritual enrichment, education, and outreach. |
Update from Your Rector Nominating Committee
We are happy to announce that beginning this week, we will begin Skype interviews with our candidates for Rector for Good Shepherd. These interviews will continue through next week, after which we will meet and work carefully together to select our final candidates for the position. Our goal is to have our final candidates selected before the end of the month so that we can move into the next stage of interviews by early November. Each phase throughout this process has required a considerable amount of prayerful support from all of you, and we hope you know just how much we appreciate it. Again, if you have any questions about our search, please feel free to find a committee member and ask--we are always happy to help!

 Sunday's Music
Hymn 680 is one of the most popular and finest works of Isaac Watts. A masterful paraphrase of Ps. 90:1-5, it can be found in practically every English-language hymnal around the world. Its matching with this tune occurred early in the 19th century. The authorship of this famous tune has long been disputed, but is now thought to have been composed by Dr. William Croft, organist of the Chapel Royal and Westminster Abbey and a leading composer of Queen Anne's reign. The tune is made up of "sawtooth" phrases then in common use. It is coincidentally similar to the first phrase to the theme of Bach's organ fugue in E-flat, BWV 552. Bach's incar-nation of this theme is older, however, having been published in 1732 whereas the tune St. Anne first appeared in print in 1749. Hymn 609 is an interesting pairing between text and tune. Written on the plight of the poor, especially in American cities, this text still speaks with intensity to contemporary Americans homelessness occurs. This early 20th century text first appeared in The Methodist Hymnal in 1905 and the Hymnal in 1916. The tune is by William Gardiner, an amateur musician who lived in Leicester, England. He was an enthusiastic admirer of Beethoven and reportedly introduced the first of the master's works ever heard in England as early as 1794. For many years it was thought that this tune came from one of Beethoven's works, but no such direct source has ever been determined. In the 1916 printing of the Hymnal the tune name was changed from Beethoven to Gardiner.
The Opening Voluntary is a posthumously published work by Maurice Duruflé, who held the post of organiste-titulaire at St-Étienne-du-Mont in Paris from 1929 until his death in 1986. In 1975 he and his wife were in an auto accident, and while he remained on the roster as organist, his wife Marie-Madeleine carried out the playing at St-Étienne-du-Mont. Duruflé was highly critical of his own compositions, and as a result he published very few pieces. His monumental Requiem, Opus 9, which features lush and inspired treatments of chants from the Missa pro defunctis, will be sung by the Choir at our Annual All Saints' Concert on November 6. Méditation features Duruflé's signature modal treatment of a simple melody and is loosely in ABA form.
