Greetings!Ron Pogue Photo 2

The Pharisees and the Herodians sent their followers to Jesus with a question that was intended to entrap him. "Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor or not?" He asked them to show him the coin used for the tax.  They were amazed at his response. READ MORE.

I'll see you in Church!

Vestry Stewardship Statement
Vestry Stewardship Statement
Christian Stewardship is our personal ministry and thanksgiving for God's unconditional love and his gifts of joyful living, hope, and forgiveness. Through our stewardship at Good Shepherd, we strengthen our spiritual life with God and each other, receive his blessings, learn and teach life's important values, nurture friendships, and serve our Diocese and our community.

We acknowledge that faith without action is meaningless. We accept the principles of proportionate, regular giving of the gifts we have received from God. We endorse striving to reach, with God's help, the tithe (ten percent) which is the biblical standard for Christian stewardship.

All members of the parish family of Good Shepherd are needed to join together to experience God through their personal stewardship of services and giving.

Therefore, the Clergy and Vestry call on all the members of Good Shepherd to acknowledge their responsibilities by offering their money, as well as their time and talents, to sustain the Church and create a future that will assure innovative and resourceful leadership and provide for the continued growth of programs offering spiritual enrichment, education, and outreach.
Chilton Knudsen
Diocese of Lexington Transition News
The Rt. Rev. Chilton R. Knudsen, retired bishop of Maine, will begin serving as Interim Assisting Bishop for the Diocese of Lexington later this month. During the next year, Bishop Knudsen will be with us for two weeks per month and three weekends. Her office will be at Mission House and her residence will be at St. Agnes House.

Called to the priesthood long before the Episcopal Church accepted the ordination of women, she finally enrolled at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, receiving the M.Div. in 1980. She was ordained deacon in 1980 and priest in 1981, first serving a new mission in Bolingbrook, Illinois, and later in other congregations, rural and inner-city. She was called as Pastoral Care Officer in 1987 (later named Canon for Pastoral Care) in the Diocese of Chicago, where she developed a nation-wide ministry of consulting and training about professional misconduct conduct in church settings. The material she developed (including a chapter in the book Restoring the Soul of the Church, Alban Institute, 1995), continues to be widely used. Elected Bishop of Maine in 1997, she served until retirement in September 2008.

Since retirement, Bishop Knudsen has been a missionary in Haiti and a retreat leader, consultant and spiritual director in the Episcopal Church and ecumenical settings. She lives in Bath, Maine with her husband, Dr. Michael Knudsen, a retired computer scientist.

Music Notes
Sunday's Music
Sunday morning's Anthem is one of the best-loved works of Richard DeLong. For 12 years he was organist at St. Mark the Evangelist RC Church in Plano, Texas, a position he held until his death. His own choir sang the premiere performances of nearly 100 choral works. He was also a past dean of the Dallas Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and was an advocate for the performance of new liturgical music. His anthem Just as I am is a tuneful arrangement of the famous text by Christina Rossetti.  The melody outlines triadic harmonies, and the final stanza is crowned by a brilliant descant.

Hymn 408 first appeared for American Episcopalians in The Hymnal 1940 under the tune name Bohemian Brethren, matched with the text "Lord Christ, when first thou cam'st to men." Indeed the first appearance of the tune was in the hymnal of the Bohemian Brethren in 1566 where it was set to the text "Mit Freuden zart zu diester Fahrt" by Georg Vetter. The tune was later matched with the German text "Sei Lob und Ehr' dem höchsten Gut," the text on which "Sing praise to God who reigns above" is derived. Hymn 544 uses one of the best known poems of Isaac Watts matched with an 18th-century psalm tune. The text first appeared in 1719 in England and made it to the U.S. in the 1826 Hymnal. The tune first appeared anonymously in Glasgow in 1793 matched with text from Psalm 19. In 1805 the tune was attributed to John Hatton in a hymn tune book, and assigned the name Duke Street. It has also been known by the names Windle, St. Helen's, and Newry. The last name occurs in The Methodist Harmonist (New York, 1822), the first official tunebook of American Methodism.
St. Mark's
A Visit to St. Mark's, Hazard
by Keila Thomas

This past Sunday I experienced a real treat. I rode with Deacon Jeff to Hazard to attend the service at St. Mark's Episcopal Church. We left Lexington at 6:30 a.m., and as we pulled out I commented to Jeff that he must really love these people. He responded that he did, and it wasn't long until I figured out why. I was so warmly welcomed and immediately felt at home. The Rev. Coke McClure is Priest-in-Charge at both Christ Church in Harlan and St. Mark's in Hazard. He comes to the 8:30 service at Hazard and then leaves immediately for the 11:00 service in Harlan. The participation of the 12 of us in the service was so open and genuine.

After the service Deacon Jeff supported some of the parishioners with pastoral care, while I visited with others. They were so happy to have someone from Good Shepherd visit their church. I invited everyone to come and worship with us, and I really hope they do. Please let me encourage you to think about making the trip to St. Mark's. Even though it is quite a drive, the fellowship and communion with our brothers and sisters made it worth the trip. Besides, I was home in time to have lunch with my family after they attended Good Shepherd.
Deacon Diatribe
by Deacon Lauren Villemuer
Deacon Shield
Deacon Jeff Howe and I will be writing an article for the newsletter about our ministries and our insights into different aspects of the church from a Vocational Deacon's perspective.

Deacon Jeff and I are Vocational Deacons. Those being called to the order of priests become Transitional Deacons as a step to the priesthood. The ministry of the deacon takes place outside the walls of the sanctuary. and  we are to be the bridge of the church to the world. Deacons remind the church of the needs out in the world and our responsibility to respond to those needs. Each deacon is called to different areas of a diaconal ministry. Deacon Jeff will be using his gifts to oversee the Outreach Ministry at Good Shepherd. He will help us stay focused on the poor, the needy, the forgotten, the lonely, the hungry, and our neighbors who need a helping hand. As a deacon, he will be reminding all of us to live out our Baptismal Covenant. He will urge each of us to use our gifts to help in an area where our hands become the heart of God.

As Jeff's ministry is focused on actions and doing, my diaconal ministry is focused on teaching. Next to regular worship, Christian Formation through classes, trying new things, going beyond our comfort zones, and sharing the things we have learned along our spiritual path is to me, the most important part of living out our Christianity. I have chosen Christian Formation for all, followed by children and youth involvement and growth as my area of ministry to focus on. Christian Formation is more than Sunday morning classes, although that is a must start place. It involves growth experiences that challenge our beliefs, that make us work harder than we thought we could, that get us to look at things differently, and to expand beyond what we thought we believed about ourselves, our faith, our church, and our God. It contains lots of learning, but then applying what we have learned to our lives, and then pushing beyond that to the next level. Also as Chaplain of the Day School, it involves encouragement of living our Christian faith and practicing that learning from the time we are born. Even the two year olds at our Day School attend chapel and are encouraged to pray, sing songs of praise, listen to Bible stories and then do something in their lives about what they just experienced.

Good Shepherd's deacons and priests welcome any questions you may have, so don't hesitate to contact any of us!

Stations of the Cross
New Stations of the Cross
Good Shepherd purchased Stations of the Cross in May 2011. The beautiful, colorful depictions painted on wood crosses were created and delivered to us this summer and have been hung in the Children's Chapel.  There will be a ceremony on Sunday, October 30 at 10:15 a.m. in Children's Chapel to bless the stations and give everyone a chance to look at them. Prayer books for using the stations have been created and are available for use at Good Shepherd or may be purchased for a small fee to take home.

The stations are hand painted by Fair Trade artisans, mostly women in other countries who are the sole wage-earner in their homes. This purchase has not only brought us beautiful artwork but also helps improve the quality of life and promote human dignity for these hardworking families.

The chapel will be open at various times of the year so the Stations of the Cross may be prayed. Adult and older youth will have access to the Station prayer and meditations from the Book of Occasional Services.

The Stations of the Cross are given to the glory of God and in memory of Clair Bierman, Connor Bierman, and Edna Monk Hager.
