From the Interim Rector
Greetings!
Like many other congregations in America, ours is emphasizing stewardship of financial resources at this time of year. I'm not sure why we have to work so hard to get Christians to do something so central to the Christian way of life. It came to my attention years ago that a substantial number of Christians consider the topic of stewardship to be less popular than some other ones. In fact, on several occasions, I've had church members suggest that I soft-pedal stewardship because some people might get upset. I've never taken that advice and here's why. READ MORE. I'll see you in Church!

 Faithful Stewards of Thy Bounty
Commitment Sunday is October 9 This year's annual stewardship commitment for the acceptable care and use of God's possessions, specifically this parish and her mission, will be held on Sunday, October 9, at all services. Commitment cards will be distributed to worshipers. We will fill them out and bring them to the Altar as an act of worship. Commitment cards will be mailed next week to those who are unable to be in worship on October 9. Almighty God, whose loving hand hath given us all that we possess: Grant us grace that we may honor thee with our substance, and, remembering the account which we must one day give, may be faithful stewards of thy bounty, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Vestry Stewardship Statement Christian Stewardship is our personal ministry and thanksgiving for God's unconditional love and his gifts of joyful living, hope, and forgiveness. Through our stewardship at Good Shepherd, we strengthen our spiritual life with God and each other, receive his blessings, learn and teach life's important values, nurture friendships, and serve our Diocese and our community.
We acknowledge that faith without action is meaningless. We accept the principles of proportionate, regular giving of the gifts we have received from God. We endorse striving to reach, with God's help, the tithe (ten percent) which is the biblical standard for Christian stewardship.
All members of the parish family of Good Shepherd are needed to join together to experience God through their personal stewardship of services and giving.
Therefore, the Clergy and Vestry call on all the members of Good Shepherd to acknowledge their responsibilities by offering their money, as well as their time and talents, to sustain the Church and create a future that will assure innovative and resourceful leadership and provide for the continued growth of programs offering spiritual enrichment, education, and outreach. |
Update from Your Nominating Committee The Nominating Committee is thrilled to announce that we are moving into an exciting and critical time in our search for a new Rector for The Church of the Good Shepherd. We have received numerous qualified, excellent candidates and, through prayerful and thoughtful consideration, will be moving forward with a good number of them. Our next phase includes receiving more in-depth information from each of these candidates, including their responses to a series of narrative questions. Following receipt of these, we will work with each candidate to set up a Skype interview with the Nominating Committee.
As always, we welcome and encourage any questions from the parish. We are continually appreciative for your support and prayers throughout this journey. Each step brings us closer to our new Rector for this wonderful community!

Music Notes Sunday's Opening Voluntary and Motet represent the works of Renaissance composer William Byrd. During the English Reformation, Byrd remained a Roman Catholic and continued to set Latin texts to music. In 1575 he and his teacher Thomas Tallis were granted a monopoly on all printed music in England. Together they published the first volume Cantiones sacrae in 1575. After Tallis's death in 1585 Byrd later published two more volumes in 1589 and 1591. When he was in his seventies Byrd published two volumes of the Gradualia (1605), which is the source of this morning's motet O sacrum convivium. Byrd's music is intimate and intended for small forces, reflecting the secrecy that enshrouded Roman Catholic worship during the Reformation. The Closing Voluntary by the Edwardian composer Charles Villiers Stanford provides a stark contrast to the reserved music of Byrd. His Allegro from Six Short Preludes and Postludes Set 2, Op. 105, is a full bodied work in large A B A form.
As always, this morning's hymns are a balance between the old and familiar and the newer hymns, serving to enrich everyone's worship experience. Hymn 481 uses a text that in other hymnals is commonly sung with Darwall's 148th, however here is it set to Handel's tune Gospal. In later life Handel became associated with the Wesleys, and at some time after 1746 he set three of Charles Wesley's hymns to music. Handel never published them, and they lay hidden until the one-page manuscript was discovered at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge by Wesley's son Samuel. The tune name Gospal is taken from the small Leicestershire village that was the place of residence of Charles Jennens, the compiler of the text for Handel's Messiah. This tune has been known to American hymnals since 1976, and though it was already published in Church of England Hymnals, this is its first inclusion in our American Hymnal 1982.

 New Stations of the Cross
Good Shepherd purchased Stations of the Cross in May 2011. The beautiful, colorful depictions painted on wood crosses were created and delivered to us this summer and have been hung in the Children's Chapel. There will be a ceremony on Sunday, October 30 at 10:15 a.m. in Children's Chapel to bless the stations and give everyone a chance to look at them. Prayer books for using the stations have been created and are available for use at Good Shepherd or may be purchased for a small fee to take home.
The stations are hand painted by Fair Trade artisans, mostly women in other countries who are the sole wage-earner in their homes. This purchase has not only brought us beautiful artwork but also helps improve the quality of life and promote human dignity for these hardworking families.
The chapel will be open at various times of the year so the Stations of the Cross may be prayed. Adult and older youth will have access to the Station prayer and meditations from the Book of Occasional Services.
The Stations of the Cross are given to the glory of God and in memory of Clair Bierman, Connor Bierman, and Edna Monk Hager.

 It Makes Our Hearts Glad...
...that the October 4 Henry Clay boys soccer game against Woodford County was dedicated to the memory Pyddney Jones. The theme of the night was Pink-Out-For-Pyddney.
...that Paul Campbell, son of Chuck and Mary Campbell, will be inducted into the Order of the Gownsmen at Sewanee on October 11 for academic distinction.
...that more than 50 animals received a blessing at our service last Sunday afternoon.
"It Makes Our Hearts Glad" provides a way for members and friends to strengthen the fabric of our community by sharing good news or offer affirmations. The word "glad" is derived from Old and Middle English words meaning shining or bright. Add to the weekly "Glad Report" by email or by calling 859.252.1744. |

If you find that once a month you're already up at 3:30 or 4:00 a.m. and would really like to feel a sense of accomplishment, you could be at the church around 4:30 to feed a hearty breakfast to our 14 to 16 overnight guests. Our guests leave by 6:30, well fed and ready to face the day. For more information, call Pat Johnson at 278-2009.
