From the Interim Rector

Greetings!Ron Pogue Photo 2

When George Rupp was President of Rice University, I heard him say, "There is no life without community and there is no community without commitment."  Think about it.  Without commitment, families, organizations, athletic teams, work groups, companies, and nations fall apart.  I have some reflections about commitment to share with you as we prepare for our Commitment Sunday, October 9.  READ MORE.

I'll see you in Church!

The Sixteenth Sunday after Pentecost

Collect

Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Savior; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Commitment Sunday, October 9

This year's annual stewardship commitment for the acceptable care and use of God's possessions, specifically this parish and her mission, will be held on Sunday, October 9, at all services.

Almighty God, whose loving hand hath given us all that we possess: Grant us grace that we may honor thee with our substance, and, remembering the account which we must one day give, may be faithful stewards of thy bounty, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Vestry Stewardship Statement
Vestry Stewardship Statement

Christian Stewardship is our personal ministry and thanksgiving for God's unconditional love and his gifts of joyful living, hope, and forgiveness. Through our stewardship at Good Shepherd, we strengthen our spiritual life with God and each other, receive his blessings, learn and teach life's important values, nurture friendships, and serve our Diocese and our community.

We acknowledge that faith without action is meaningless. We accept the principles of proportionate, regular giving of the gifts we have received from God. We endorse striving to reach, with God's help, the tithe (ten percent) which is the biblical standard for Christian stewardship.

All members of the parish family of Good Shepherd are needed to join together to experience God through their personal stewardship of services and giving.

Therefore, the Clergy and Vestry call on all the members of Good Shepherd to acknowledge their responsibilities by offering their money, as well as their time and talents, to sustain the Church and create a future that will assure innovative and resourceful leadership and provide for the continued growth of programs offering spiritual enrichment, education, and outreach.
Music Notes
Music Notes
Both Sunday Voluntaries represent the French Baroque and French post- Romantic eras respectively. Unfortunately neither registers particularly well on our present limited instrument (German neo-Baroque), so to truly understand what sounds the composers had in mind one would need to travel to a different instrument. Guillaume-Gabriel Nivers is an important figure in the history of music as his Livre d'Orgue is the earliest example of Baroque French organ forms where the names of the movements indicate the organ registrations (Basse Trompette, Cornet, Récit de Cromorne, etc.). Nivers was organiste-titulaire at Ste Sulpice in Paris for more than 50 years; that post is still one of the most prestigious church jobs in the world. Henri Mulet's Carillon-Sortie is perhaps his most famous work. Intended to imitate the ringing of church bells, an ostinato figure permeates the work accompanying the first theme while the second theme uses a descending fourth pattern, again emulating the bell tower. Mulet was a student of Guilmant and Widor in Paris, but in 1937 he burned all of his manuscripts and moved to Draguignan where he spent the last 30 years of his life in seclusion.

Hymn 518 is one of the most beloved and most often sung hymns of the Anglican Church. The tune Westminster Abbey is derived from an anthem by Henry Purcell and was given its name by Sir Sidney Nicholson (organist of the Abbey from 1919 to 1928 and founder of the Royal School of Church Music). Hymn 621 is less well known though it has been in Episcopal hymnals since 1892.  The tune Rhuddlan is a Welsh national melody from the harp tradition, where it is known as Dowch I'r Frwdyr ("Come to battle"). Rhuddlan is one of the Welsh tunes introduced to English hymn singing in the English Hymnal (1906), from which this arrangement, probably by Vaughan Williams, is taken. The name is that of a town on the North Wales coast, the scene of many battles, where the ruins of a Norman castle indicate its strategic importance.

Room in the Inn
Help Wanted for Room in the Inn
Room in the Inn (RITI) is in need of a breakfast team for the second Wednesday of every month. This would entail cooking only five breakfasts a year, November through March. If you find that once a month you're already up at 3:30 or 4:00 a.m. and would really like to feel a sense of accomplishment, you could be at the church around 4:30 to feed a hearty breakfast to our 14 to 16 overnight guests. Our guests leave by 6:30, well fed and ready to face the day. For more information, call Pat Johnson at 278-2009.
