From the Interim Rector

Greetings!Ron Pogue Photo 2

Jesus told some religious leaders a story about two sons. One son refused to do what he was asked to do, but ended up doing it anyway.  The other son said he would do what he was asked to do, but didn't follow through.  Jesus wanted the religious leaders to know that they were the ones who were not following through and that the people they most despised were going to catch on and get it.   READ MORE.

I'll see you in Church!

Commitment Sunday

This year's annual stewardship commitment for the acceptable care and use of God's possessions, specifically this parish and her mission, will be held on Sunday, October 9, at all services.

Almighty God, whose loving hand hath given us all that we possess: Grant us grace that we may honor thee with our substance, and, remembering the account which we must one day give, may be faithful stewards of thy bounty, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Vestry Stewardship Statement
Vestry Stewardship Statement

Christian Stewardship is our personal ministry and thanksgiving for God's unconditional love and his gifts of joyful living, hope, and forgiveness. Through our stewardship at Good Shepherd, we strengthen our spiritual life with God and each other, receive his blessings, learn and teach life's important values, nurture friendships, and serve our Diocese and our community.

We acknowledge that faith without action is meaningless. We accept the principles of proportionate, regular giving of the gifts we have received from God. We endorse striving to reach, with God's help, the tithe (ten percent) which is the biblical standard for Christian stewardship.

All members of the parish family of Good Shepherd are needed to join together to experience God through their personal stewardship of services and giving.

Therefore, the Clergy and Vestry call on all the members of Good Shepherd to acknowledge their responsibilities by offering their money, as well as their time and talents, to sustain the Church and create a future that will assure innovative and resourceful leadership and provide for the continued growth of programs offering spiritual enrichment, education, and outreach.

Music Notes

Music Notes

Sunday's Voluntaries are from 17th century Germany, the organ repertoire most suited for our limited neo-Baroque organ. Samuel Scheidt and Nikolaus Bruhns pre-date J.S. Bach, and both composers' works were influential to Bach. At an early age Scheidt went to Amsterdam to study with the eminent composer Sweelinck, who had a great influence on many young German composers. Bruhns was equally adept at the violin and the organ, and is said to have accompanied himself on the violin with the pedals on the organ. An example of the stylus fantasticus ("showy" or "fantasy" style), Bruhns's Praeludium resembles the style of his teacher Dieterich Buxtehude.

Sunday's hymns are a blend of both old and new traditions, exemplary of the Episcopal Church. Hymn 411, a favorite in the English-speaking world for more than a century, is a paraphrase of Ps.103:1-5 by Scottish hymn writer James Montgomery, and first appeared in 1819. The peculiar tune name St. Thomas (Williams) always generates conversation.  The tune in its original form was much longer, and later it was discovered that the second half of the tune made a good tune by itself; what is printed today is only the second half. Originally named Holborn, the tune became known as St. Thomas with Williams added later to avoid confusion with Wade's tune of the same name (see Hymn 58). The descant and re-harmonization is by English composer Geoffrey Shaw, who was great-grandfather to the present day popular singer Emma Bonner-Morgan. Hymn 492 is an old text matched with a new tune. The text first appeared in the 1892 edition of the Hymnal but was subsequently deleted until it appeared in Hymns III in the mid-70s. The tune was composed in 1966 by Christopher Dearnley on the date of birth of his youngest child. The tune name Finnian is derived from the name of a sixth century Irish saint, whose name was one of the names given to Dearnley's child. The descant and re-harmonization of the last stanza are by John Linker.

Amen.

You Are Invited

Reginald Smith Jr. will present his Senior Voice Recital this Sunday, September 25, at 3 p.m. at the Singletary Center for the Arts Concert Hall, 405 Rose Street. This recital is in partial fulfillment of his degree in Vocal Performance. This concert is FREE and open to the public.

Evensong with Chorister and Evensong
Acolyte Installation
Join us this Sunday, September 25, at 6 p.m. for a special Evensong service where we officially commission the ministries of singers and acolytes. This beautiful service, a living relic of our Anglican tradition, will affirm the calling of those to the ministries of choristers and acolytes. A reception provided by the Choir Guild follows this service.

The Annual Parish Meeting and Election will take place on Sunday, November 13. This year, we'll begin with a service of Choral Evensong at 5 p.m., then move to the Undercroft for a potluck supper. The Annual Meeting and Election will follow and we expect to adjourn by 7 p.m.

As you know, the current vestry will remain intact until June of 2012. As that time approaches, there will be a special parish election to fill the vestry positions of the five members who would normally have rotated off at the beginning of the year. There will be no election of vestry members this fall. However, we do need to elect deputies to the Diocesan Convention and that election will take place at the Annual Parish Meeting on November 13. The 2012 convention will be held on February 17-18 in Lexington. In addition, persons considering nomination as deputies should expect to be called to attend a special convention during 2012 for the purpose of electing the Seventh Bishop of Lexington.

If you or someone in the parish may be called to serve as a deputy, contact
Kathy Gross, Senior Warden at 873-2227 no later than September 30. The vestry's nominating committee will consider all names submitted and present nominations to the parish in October, prior to the November 13 election. Nominees must be at least 16 years of age and confirmed communicants in good standing in Good Shepherd parish.
Hearts Glad
It Makes Our Hearts Glad...

..that Katherine Elaine Willard and Peter Zachary Hilligoss were joined in Holy Matrimony yesterday.

...that parish secretary Cindy McKee will return to work in the Good Shepherd office on Monday.

The word "glad" is derived from Old and Middle English words meaning shining or bright. Add to the weekly "Glad Report" by email or by calling 859.252.1744.

Our guests leave by 6:30, well fed and ready to face the day. For more information, call Pat Johnson at 278-2009.
