From the Interim Rector
Greetings!
Occasionally, I am asked about tithing. Since we are entering the season when churches traditionally emphasize faithful stewardship, I thought it might be helpful to share a few thoughts on the subject HERE. I'll see you in Church!

Commitment Sunday This year's annual stewardship commitment for the acceptable care and use of God's possessions, specifically this parish and her mission, will be held on Sunday, October 9, at all services. Almighty God, whose loving hand hath given us all that we possess: Grant us grace that we may honor thee with our substance, and, remembering the account which we must one day give, may be faithful stewards of thy bounty, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. |
Music Notes

Alexandre Pierre François Boëly was a pivotal figure in the history of French organ music. Opera was popular in Paris in the 17th century, and church organ music was quickly becoming less sophisticated and lighthearted. Boëly is credited with being an advocate for the old masters and bringing seriousness of purpose back to liturgical organ music. He was also said to be the only organist in France of his time to have the proper pedal technique to play the works of J.S. Bach. Boëly's works tend to be chromatic, anticipating the style of Schumann and Mendelssohn. Of Boëly's 300 works for organ, this morning's closing voluntary is his most famous. Boëly's music is rather difficult to authentically register on our organ, but while the tonal resources are limited, the contrapuntal nature of his writing is plainly heard.
Hymn 410 is among the most frequently sung and most famous hymns of the Anglican Communion. The text, a free paraphrase of Psalm 103, first appeared in 1834. The tune was composed for this specific text (though originally in the key of E), and has been sung at several royal weddings. Hymn 541 has also enjoyed great popularity since its original appearance in 1859. The broad unison melody by T. Tertius Noble (organist at St. Thomas Fifth Avenue, New York, from 1913-1943) was written to accompany this text when it entered our Hymnal in 1916. The descant is by Bruce Neswick, newly appointed professor of organ at Indiana University.
The Anthem by Parry is another of the time-venerated melodies of English church music. The text is taken from John Greenleaf Whittier's 17-stanza poem "The Brewing of Soma," first published in 1872. The tune name Repton honors one of the older and more distinguished British public schools where the tune, matched with these words, was first introduced in Repton School Hymns (London, 1924).

Evensong with Chorister and Acolyte Installation
Join us on Sunday, September 25, at 6 p.m. for a special Evensong service where we officially commission the ministries of singers and acolytes.
The Office of Evensong h as been called a crown jewel of the Church. Its history lies in the deep roots of monastic observance of the hours. Thomas Cranmer artfully crafted the language of this service from Latin sources, and the form of this service has been relatively unchanged since its inclusion in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. Music for this service will include Sumsion's G-Major setting of the Magnificat & Nunc dimittis (the traditional canticles for evensong) and Radcliffe's setting of the Responses, chanted in alternatim between Officiant and Choir. The Anthem text is the motto of the Royal School of Church Music, "I will sing with the Spirit and understanding," set to music by contemporary composer David Goodenough.
Please join us for this beautiful service, a living relic of our Anglican tradition, and join to affirm the calling of those to the ministries of choristers and acolytes. A reception provided by the Choir Guild follows this service. |
Blessing of the Animals Our Annual Blessing of the animals will take place on Sunday, October 2, at 4 p.m. This is a wonderful event for animal lovers and our animal friends.
