Greetings!Ron Pogue Photo 2

As we approach the observance of the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001, I find myself continuing to struggle with how to apply Jesus' teachings about forgiveness. It so happens that the anniversary falls on a Sunday and the appointed gospel reading for the day is The Parable of the Unforgiving Servant.  READ MORE

Robert Kirkpatrick
Sunday's Guest Preacher

On Sunday morning, September 11, we welcome The Rev. Robert F. Kirkpatrick to the pulpit of the Church of the Good Shepherd.

The Rev. Robert F. Kirkpatrick is a native of Montgomery, Alabama, and a graduate of the University of the South and the Virginia Theological Seminary. Before seminary, he was a teacher for four years, and traveled for a corporation for two years. Following seminary, he was ordained in the Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast, and served as Rector of St. Paul's Church in Foley,Alabama. He then moved to the Church of the Ascension in Clearwater, Florida, where he served as an assistant. His next call was to be Rector of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Covington, Georgia and from there he moved to Danville, Kentucky, to become Rector of Trinity Church, where he retired five years ago.

Fr. Bob is married to Priscilla, a special education teacher, and while she continues on, he is pursuing interests in music, art history, and gardening. Together, they are parents of six adult children and four grandchildren.

Music Notes

Music Notes

As Sunday is the 10th anniversary of 9/11/01, music in churches around the world takes on a reconciliatory nature, filled with introspection and the promise of peace. The Opening Voluntary is from Dan Locklair's liturgical suite Rubrics, a collection of five pieces inspired by various rubrics (directives originally printed in red, hence "rubric") from the Book of Common Prayer. "The Peace May Be Exchanged" beautifully interprets the idea of being at peace with oneself, with each other, and with God. Locklair lives in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and is among the most celebrated of contemporary American composers. The Anthem is a setting of an anonymous 16th century text by 20th century British composer David Lord. It was dedicated to the choir of Coventry Cathedral, a building that was mistakenly bombed by the Germans in World War II (from the air a Cathedral can appear to be a warehouse). The famous text Ubi caritas et amor is set to English in Hymn 576: Where there is charity and love, there is God. The tune Mandatum was composed by Richard Proulx in 1983 (also the composer of this morning's Sanctus S125) for use with this text. The tune that flows gently in a stepwise manner, shows the composer's deep knowledge of plainsong. With its narrow range, it lies comfortably within the range of the average singer in any congregation.

Amen.

Annual Parish Meeting and Election

The Annual Parish Meeting and Election
will take place on Sunday, November 13. This year, we'll begin with a service of Choral Evensong at 5 p.m., then move to the Undercroft for a potluck supper. The Annual Meeting and Election will follow and we expect to adjourn by 7 p.m.

Nominations- The Rector Nominating Committee expects to present names of candidates to the vestry soon after the beginning of 2012. Normally, the new vestry members and wardens begin their service in January. It would be awkward for a new rector to arrive just as the vestry rotation occurs.  Therefore, in consultation with and with the consent of the Bishop, the current vestry will remain intact until June of 2012. As that time approaches, there will be a special parish election to fill the vestry positions of the five members who would normally have rotated off at the beginning of the year. There will be no election of vestry members this fall.

However, we do need to elect deputies to the Diocesan Convention and that election will take place at the Annual Parish Meeting on November 13. The 2012 convention will be held on February 17-18 in Lexington. In addition, persons considering nomination as deputies should expect to be called to attend a special convention during 2012 for the purpose of electing the Seventh Bishop of Lexington. If you or someone in the parish may be called to serve as a deputy, contact Kathy Gross, Senior Warden (859-873-2227), no later than September 30. The vestry's nominating committee will consider all names submitted and present nominations to the parish in October, prior to the November 13 election. Nominees must be at least 16 years of age and confirmed communicants in good standing in Good Shepherd parish.

Outreach Ministry Gala

Save the Date
