From the Interim Rector
Greetings!
Psychologists tell us that people tend to remember the beginning and end of things better than what happens in between. That is probably why we mark beginnings and endings with rituals and ceremonies. The rituals may be jubilant or somber, but they draw us together around significant moments and act as a kind of preservative in the days and years ahead. READ MORE.
I'll see you in Church!

Music Notes

With Sunday being our annual "rally day," the music is both festive and introspective, stirring us in our mission to serve God and to be the Church. The text of the Psalm instructs us Cantate Domino canticum novum - Sing to the Lord a new song, fitting as we start another program year at Good Shepherd. The text of the anthem wonderfully expresses the nature of the Christian family within a Eucharistic context. Harold Friedell, a native of New York, was organist at Manhattan's St. Bartholomew's Church and on the faculty of Union Theological Seminary. Perhaps the most poingnant text sung by the congregation today is that of Hymn 347, which instructs us to carry out the actions of our daily lives fortified by the richness we shared in the Eucharist. The hymntune Litton was commissioned in 1982 by the Choir of Trinity Parish, Princeton, New Jersey, to honor Dr. James Litton upon then end of his tenure there as organist.

Ministry Fair and Church Picnic Wear your picnic clothes and stay after the 10 a.m. service this Sunday for a fun and informative time with your church family! The Parish Life Committee will be serving up a picnic of hot dogs, chips, baked beans and drinks. Appetizers and desserts will be provided by the various ministries of Good Shepherd. This is sure to be a relaxed, enjoyable time to get information about and consider what ministry areas you might be interested in. No need to do anything but show up. See you at the Fair! |
Welcome, Deacon Howe
The Rev. Jeff Howe, our new part-time vocational deacon, will be with us this Sunday, preaching at both services and then joining us for the Ministry Fair activities. Deacon Howe will divide his time between Good Shepherd and St. Mark's Church, Hazard, two weeks each per month. Like most vocational deacons, he serves with no compensation from the Church. Good Shepherd will make a monthly contribution to the diocesan Small Church Ministry Consortium from which his expenses will be reimbursed and other expenses related to this joint venture will be covered. It is hoped that most of this cost will come from the Kroger Card income. If you shop at Kroger, be sure to stop by the church office to get a Good Shepherd Kroger card. The cards cost $5 and have that amount pre-loaded. After you add your own additional funds, use it to pay for gas and groceries and Good Shepherd gets 4% of the total..

We're Tuning Up For a Musical Year!
The Choirs are poised to begin another exciting year of musical leadership here at Good Shepherd, and we want YOU! With each of our fine choirs there are opportunities for all to participate. Children aged 8 through high school receive the benefit of weekly rehearsals and music theory instruction in the Treble Choir. Preschool-aged children through age 7 have the opportunity to learn about the church through movement and song in the Young Children's Music Ministry. Adult participation is through the Canterbury Choir and the Parish Choir.
The Trebles and Adults are beginning to make plans for a tour through France and Italy in the summer of 2013. Now is an excellent time to join the ranks of our world class choir program! Call choirmaster John Linker today at 252-1744 to discuss your involvement.

Annual Parish Meeting and Election
The Annual Parish Meeting and Election will take place on Sunday, November 13. This year, we'll begin with a service of Choral Evensong at 5 p.m., then move to the Undercroft for a potluck supper. The Annual Meeting and Election will follow and we expect to adjourn by 7 p.m.
Nominations- The Rector Nominating Committee expects to present names of candidates to the vestry soon after the beginning of 2012. Normally, the new vestry members and wardens begin their service in January. It would be awkward for a new rector to arrive just as the vestry rotation occurs. Therefore, in consultation with and with the consent of the Bishop, the current vestry will remain intact until June of 2012. As that time approaches, there will be a special parish election to fill the vestry positions of the five members who would normally have rotated off at the beginning of the year. There will be no election of vestry members this fall.
However, we do need to elect deputies to the Diocesan Convention and that election will take place at the Annual Parish Meeting on November 13. The 2012 convention will be held on February 17-18 in Lexington. In addition, persons considering nomination as deputies should expect to be called to attend a special convention during 2012 for the purpose of electing the Seventh Bishop of Lexington. If you or someone in the parish may be called to serve as a deputy, contact Kathy Gross, Senior Warden (859-873-2227), no later than September 30. The vestry's nominating committee will consider all names submitted and present nominations to the parish in October, prior to the November 13 election. Nominees must be at least 16 years of age and confirmed communicants in good standing in Good Shepherd parish.
