The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd in Lexington, Kentucky E-News Edition for August 25, 2011

From the Interim Rector
Greetings!
In Sunday's gospel reading, we find Jesus rebuking Peter for trying to tempt Jesus to find an easier, safer, less costly way to be the Messiah. Jesus called him a "stumbling block." In the ongoing redemptive work of Christ, are you providing support or getting in the way? I personally struggle with the question on a regular basis. READ MORE.
I'll see you in Church!

Music Notes

Sunday's music features early American hymntunes and an even earlier German chorale. The tune of Hymn 450 is unquestionably the most often printed and most frequently used of the 18th-century American hymn tunes, first appearing in Union Harmony (Boston, 1793). It appeared in almost every publication since then with slight changes over the years, but has always been the same basic tune matched with this text. Hymn 439, considered today to be the quintessential shapenote hymn, first appeared in the 1840 printing of The Southern Harmony (New Haven, CT). In a later 1867 publication the tune was attributed to "Christopher," and it was later discovered that James Christopher of Spartanburg, South Carolina was the arranger of the tune. Hymn 334 is a jubilant paean of praise to God who in the Eucharist declares victory over cross and passion. In it we express our oneness with the Creator and respond to the command to go out into the world as faithful followers of the risen Christ. The tune dates at least from a Nuremberg publication of 1691. The harmonization of this joyful German tune is based on a chorale harmonization by J.S. Bach as found in Hymns Ancient & Modern from 1922. The exuberant Toccata in F (BWV 540) opens with two canonic sections, one in the tonic and one in the dominant, are answered by brilliant pedal cadenzas. Following the opening canons, a new theme is drawn from an ascending arpeggiated figure on a triad which is followed by chords on the second and third beats. Neapolitan sixth chords bring a surprise element to the harmony several times.

The Campaign for a New Organ for Good Shepherd The campaign you've been hearing about to raise $1.4 million to replace our ailing pipe organ is well underway.
Many Good Shepherd members and friends have already "Piped Up" with their support and you may see them wearing a button around the church that resembles the image in this article. Please consider joining them in this important project! Commitments can be fulfilled over a 36 month period (spanning four tax years), with completion due in October 2014.
Contact parish administrator Dale Chapman at 252-1744 or dchapman@goodshepherdlex.org for information about setting up an automatic deduction from your bank account to pay the pledge.

The Good Shepherd Men's Group will be taking orders for fall mums the next three Sundays--August 28, September 4 and September 11. Look for the order table near the coffee area by the playground doors
The mums come in two sizes, 9" and 10", and four colors-- lavender, red/orange, yellow and white. The cost $10 for the 9" and $12 for the 10". A New Development in Mission
Good Shepherd is embarking on a new venture in mission through a covenant partnership with St. Mark's Church in Hazard, Kentucky, and with the placement of Deacon Jeffrey N. Howe, who will serve at each location two Sundays per month. Deacon Howe's first Sunday at Good Shepherd will be September 4. He will deliver the sermon and be with us for the Ministry Fair.
Like most vocational deacons, Jeff Howe serves with no compensation from the Church. Good Shepherd will make a monthly contribution to the Small Church Ministry Con sortium from which his expenses will be reimbursed and other expenses related to this joint venture will be covered. The vestry has directed that funds from the Kroger Card program will be used to support this new mission endeavor. Cards are available at the reception desk in the parish office during the week and on Sundays. Buy a card for $5 and "charge it up" at Kroger for an amount you expect to spend. Using these cards, Good Shepherd receives 4% of the amount we spend at Kroger stores.

Annual Parish Meeting and Election
The Annual Parish Meeting and Election will take place on Sunday, November 13. This year, we'll begin with a service of Choral Evensong at 5 p.m., then move to the Undercroft for a potluck supper. The Annual Meeting and Election will follow and we expect to adjourn by 7 p.m.
Nominations- The Rector Nominating Committee expects to present names of candidates to the vestry soon after the beginning of 2012. Normally, the new vestry members and wardens begin their service in January. It would be awkward for a new rector to arrive just as the vestry rotation occurs. Therefore, in consultation with and with the consent of the Bishop, the current vestry will remain intact until June of 2012. As that time approaches, there will be a special parish election to fill the vestry positions of the five members who would normally have rotated off at the beginning of the year. There will be no election of vestry members this fall.
However, we do need to elect deputies to the Diocesan Convention and that election will take place at the Annual Parish Meeting on November 13. The 2012 convention will be held on February 17-18 in Lexington. In addition, persons considering nomination as deputies should expect to be called to attend a special convention during 2012 for the purpose of electing the Seventh Bishop of Lexington. If you or someone in the parish may be called to serve as a deputy, contact Kathy Gross, Senior Warden (859-873-2227), no later than September 30. The vestry's nominating committee will consider all names submitted and present nominations to the parish in October, prior to the November 13 election. Nominees must be at least 16 years of age and confirmed communicants in good standing in Good Shepherd parish.
