From the Interim Rector
Greetings!
It is ironic how God delivered Moses, how Moses delivered God's people, and how God is able to deliver us so that we may grow and blend our wills with the divine will in spite of all sorts of forces around us. READ MORE.
Also, once again, let me stress the importance of our appeal for every member of the parish to "Pipe Up" and make a financial commitment for a new organ for Good Shepherd.
For this campaign to succeed, it is going to require participation and sacrifice on the part of everyone. As the rector nominating committee enters more deeply into discernment with candidates, this campaign will be an important indicator of the health and vision of the parish. Also, in looking ahead to a new parish hall in the near future, it will be necessary to have this project successfully completed.
Campaign consultants consistently say that a church can reasonably expect to raise in a capital campaign at least three times the total of pledge and plate given in one fiscal year. The amount we seek for this new organ is half that much. Please consider pledging an amount equal to or above your annual contribution, to be spread over 36 months, for this campaign.
I'll see you in Church!

Music Notes

Sunday morning we will welcome three members of Kentucky Baroque Trumpets--Don Johnson, Dave Hummel and Joe Van Fleet. The group was founded in 2005 to help promote awareness of the Baroque trumpet and the music written for it, including signal calls, cavalry music, dance music, duets, solo music, and trumpet with voice. A Baroque trumpet is longer and has a darker tone than a modern trumpet. The chief difference, however, is that the Baroque trumpet has no valves, which limits the literature and the keys that it can play. Without the assistance of valves the player has to "lip" to each note, consequently making it much more difficult to play than the modern trumpet. Those who play Baroque trumpet have indicated the byproduct is better overall musicianship, mainly because one has to listen more carefully and very precisely aim for pitches, again without the assistance of valves that would bring the harmonic series more within reach. The members of Kentucky Baroque Trumpets are very happy to explain and demonstrate their instruments. You are welcome to enter the Quire following the service for a brief demonstration and further explanation of these unique instruments.

A New Development in Mission Deacon Jeffrey Howe and St. Mark's, Hazard
Good Shepherd is embarking on a new venture in mission through a covenant partnership with St. Mark's Church in Hazard, Kentucky and with the placement of Deacon Jeffrey N. Howe, who will facilitate building the bridge between the two congregations.
The Rev. Jeffrey N. Howe is celebrating three years as an ordained deacon. During his tenure as deacon, he has served various Small Church Ministry Consortium churches. He is currently serving St. Mark's of Hazard and has done so for more than a year. For the past twenty-five years, he has been employed by the UK Sanders-Brown Center on Aging where he holds the position of Administrative Coordinator for Clinical Activities.
Deacon Howe will now serve in both congregations, serving at each location two Sundays a month. In addition to fostering the relationship between the two congregations, Deacon Howe will be the member of the clergy who gives oversight to the strengthening of Good Shepherd's outreach ministries. In that role, he will concentrate on the organizational development of our various outreach groups, find ways to expand our outreach, and help recruit more members to serve.
Like most vocational deacons, Jeff Howe serves with no compensation from the Church. Good Shepherd will make a monthly contribution to the Small Church Ministry Consortium from which his expenses will be reimbursed and other expenses related to this joint venture will be covered. The vestry has directed that funds from the Kroger Card program will be used to support this new mission endeavor. Cards are available at the reception desk in the parish office during the week and on Sundays. Buy a card for $5 and "charge it up" at Kroger for an amount you expect to spend. Using these cards, Good Shepherd receives 4% of the amount we spend at Kroger stores.
St. Mark's is a small congregation with a big heart. At the present time, the congregation is being redeveloped and is making progress in strengthening the presence of The Episcopal Church in Eastern Kentucky. The Rev. Coke McClure, one of the Diocese of Lexington Network clergy, is the Priest in Charge. He will be working with Fr. Pogue, Deacon Howe, and lay leadership in both congregations to build a mutually beneficial relationship. We will see Fr. McClure at Good Shepherd from time to time, and the Good Shepherd clergy will occasionally serve at St. Mark's.
When Deacon Howe is in Hazard, we are hoping some members of Good Shepherd will worship there and when he is at Good Shepherd, we are hoping to see members of St. Mark's in our pews. In this way, relationships will be established so that the ministry of the two congregations can be truly mutual and fruitful.
Deacon Howe's first Sunday at Good Shepherd will be September 4. He will deliver the sermon and be with us for the Ministry Fair.

Celebrate Abby Clayton and St. Agnes' House You are invited to an Open House at St. Agnes' House on Saturday, August 20, from 1 to 3 p.m.
For her Girl Scout Gold Award, our own Abby Clayton updated the back guest house kitchen and common area with new paint, curtains, lighting, and refurbished or replaced some furniture.
Abby, daughter of Kim Edwards and Thomas Clayton, is very active at Good Shepherd and started volunteering at St. Agnes' House after being assigned there during her first 30 Hour Famine. She continues volunteering there on a regular basis. Abby raised the funds, hired the electricians and carpenters and did the painting and other work herself for this renovation project. Let's show our appreciation for her accomplishment!

 Book Club Returns in September
The Book Club will meet on Thursday, September 1, at 6:30 p.m. in the Good Shepherd Library. The selection to read and discuss is No Impact Man by Colin Beavan.
Beavan chronicles his year-long effort to leave as little impact on the environment as possible by foregoing toilet paper and electricity, relinquishing motorized transportation, becoming a locavore and volunteering with environmental organizations. Beavan captures his own shortcomings with candor and wit and offers surprising revelations.
Colin Beavan will be speaking at the Singletary Center on the University of Kentucky campus on Tuesday, September 20. His lecture is open to the public.

 It Makes Our Hearts Glad...
...that Susanne Railey Brown and Edward Ross Testerman will be joined in Holy Matrimony at Good Shepherd on August 20. ...that Leroy Nealy, our sexton, stripped and refinished the floor in the undercroft. It looks beautiful.
...that the Good Shepherd Day School staff and administrators had a successful orientation week.
...that Misdee Miller, Ken and Ann Miller's daughter-in-law, has been selected to represent the United States of America in the World Pairs Driving Championship in Conty, France. "Pairs" means a pair of horses. The horses are pulling a steel open carriage (driven by Misdee) with a navigator standing on the back. This is a grueling three day competition with cross country, obstacles and dressage (cones) courses. To enjoy combined driving first hand, come to the Kentucky Horse Park in October. (Call for schedules.)
"It Makes Our Hearts Glad" provides a way for members and friends to strengthen the fabric of our community by sharing good news or offer affirmations. The word "glad" is derived from Old and Middle English words meaning shining or bright. Add to the weekly "Glad Report" by email or by calling 859.252.1744. |

Education for Ministry
What is this EfM I keep hearing about?
Education for Ministry, or EfM for short, is a program of adult theological education from St. Luke's School of Theology at the University of the South (Sewanee). Course work covers:
· Year One - Old Testament
· Year Two - New Testament
· Year Three - Church History
· Year Four - Theology
So all of these people are going to be ordained?
EfM is for lay people. We are all called to ministry at our Baptism. Education for Ministry gives lay people the knowledge and confidence to carry out the ministry we all share.
Who teaches EfM?
Participants follow a lesson plan and are responsible for their own learning. The written materials include a text assignment and study guide for each week. A trained mentor facilitates the group meetings.
What happens in an EfM group?
Group participants share their spiritual autobiographies, discuss their weekly lessons, engage in theological reflection and worship together.
Theological reflection?
Theological reflection is simply a structured conversation in which participants draw on four basic sources.
· Action or Personal Experience
· Tradition
· Culture
· Position or Beliefs
Sounds like a big commitment.
For one year at a time, participants commit to:
· Attend regularly
· Prepare ahead of time
· Share thoughts and feelings
· Respect the thoughts and feelings of others
· Keep confidentiality
· Tuition of $340 per year (Some financial aid is available.)
How can I find out more?
Visit the EfM website to look at sample lessons and learn more about the history of the Education for Ministry program. To find out more about EfM at Good Shepherd, emailt Dale Chapman, EfM Diocesan Coordinator, in the parish office or phone her at 859-252-1744.
When does EfM begin?
Good Shepherd's group will meet in Monday evenings from 6:00 to 8:30 beginning on September 12. Enrollments must be completed so that materials may be ordered by the end of August.

Annual Parish Meeting & Election
The Annual Parish Meeting and Election will take place on Sunday, November 13. This year, we'll begin with a service of Choral Evensong at 5:00 p.m., then move to the Undercroft for a potluck supper. The Annual Meeting and Election will follow and we expect to adjourn by 7:00 p.m.
Nominations- The Rector Nominating Committee expects to present names of candidates to the vestry soon after the beginning of 2012. Normally, the new vestry members and wardens begin their service in January. It would be awkward for a new rector to arrive just as the vestry rotation occurs. Therefore, in consultation with and with the consent of the Bishop, the current vestry will remain intact until June of 2012. As that time approaches, there will be a special parish election to fill the vestry positions of the five members who would normally have rotated off at the beginning of the year. There will be no election of vestry members this fall.
However, we do need to elect deputies to the Diocesan Convention and that election will take place at the Annual Parish Meeting on November 13. The 2012 convention will be held on February 17-18 in Lexington. In addition, persons considering nomination as deputies should expect to be called to attend a special convention during 2012 for the purpose of electing the Seventh Bishop of Lexington. If you or someone in the parish may be called to serve as a deputy, contact Kathy Gross, Senior Warden (859-873-2227), no later than September 30. The vestry's nominating committee will consider all names submitted and present nominations to the parish in October, prior to the November 13 election. Nominees must be at least 16 years of age and confirmed communicants in good standing in Good Shepherd parish.
