From the Interim Rector
Greetings!
Justice is something we get the hang of quite early in life. Children at play seem to have an innate sense of it as evidenced by their oft repeated cry, "That's not fair!" But catching onto mercy is neither easy nor fashionable. READ MORE .
Also, let me stress the importance of our appeal for every member of the parish to "Pipe Up" and make a financial commitment for a new organ for Good Shepherd.
For this campaign to succeed, it is going to require participation and sacrifice on the part of everyone. As the rector nominating committee enters more deeply into discernment with candidates, this campaign will be an important indicator of the health and vision of the parish. Also, in looking ahead to a new parish hall in the near future, it will be necessary to have this project successfully completed.
Campaign consultants consistently say that a church can reasonably expect to raise in a capital campaign at least three times the total of pledge and plate given in one fiscal year. The amount we seek for this new organ is half that much. Please consider pledging an amount equal to or above your annual contribution, to be spread over 36 months, for this campaign.
I'll see you in Church!

Music Notes

Sunday's service will be sung by trebles Katherine Wright and Eli Wrinn. The music of celebrated French Romantic composer César Franck enriches both the Opening Voluntary and the Offertory Motet. Franck, organist at Ste Clotilde and organ professor at the Paris Conservatory, was a pioneer of early symphonic organ music. The haunting Prélude, Fugue, et Variation was first published in 1868 in his Six Pièces. One of his most famous motets is Panis angelicus, originally written for tenor solo and organ & string accompaniment and incorporated into his Messe à trois voix Opus 12 (1872).
Hymn 544 is perhaps one of the best known works of Isaac Watts, which first appeared in his Psalms of David (London, 1719) as Part II of his version of Ps. 72, and has been in Episcopal collections since the 1826 Hymnal. The tune made its first appearance anonymously in 1793 and was headed "Addison's 19th Psalm" in reference to Joseph Addison's "The spacious firmament on high" (Hymn 409). At the beginning of the 19th century it was given the tune name Duke Street and attributed to John Hatton (d. 1793).

The Campaign for a New Organ for Good Shepherd The campaign you've been hearing about to raise $1.4 million to replace our ailing pipe organ is underway. You should have already received a letter from Dr. George Zack, chair of the campaign committee, inviting you to "Pipe Up" by making a pledge. Contributions can be spread over a 36 month period, starting in September. However, the campaign leadership points out that those 36 months touch four tax years; therefore, we are encouraged to give prayerful consideration to a pledge equal to or greater than the amount of our regular annual contribution.
Dr. Zack and Organist/Choirmaster John Linker, along with Organ Committee members Joe Jones and John Bloomfield, have prepared a presentation to demonstrate and explain the need for this undertaking. Come to the Nave this Sunday, August 14, between the two morning services to hear their presentation and have your questions answered..

Education for Ministry
What is this EfM I keep hearing about?
Education for Ministry, or EfM for short, is a program of adult theological education from St. Luke's School of Theology at the University of the South (Sewanee). Course work covers:
· Year One - Old Testament
· Year Two - New Testament
· Year Three - Church History
· Year Four - Theology
So all of these people are going to be ordained?
EfM is for lay people. We are all called to ministry at our Baptism. Education for Ministry gives lay people the knowledge and confidence to carry out the ministry we all share.
Who teaches EfM?
Participants follow a lesson plan and are responsible for their own learning. The written materials include a text assignment and study guide for each week. A trained mentor facilitates the group meetings.
What happens in an EfM group?
Group participants share their spiritual autobiographies, discuss their weekly lessons, engage in theological reflection and worship together.
Theological reflection?
Theological reflection is simply a structured conversation in which participants draw on four basic sources.
· Action or Personal Experience
· Tradition
· Culture
· Position or Beliefs
Sounds like a big commitment.
For one year at a time, participants commit to:
· Attend regularly
· Prepare ahead of time
· Share thoughts and feelings
· Respect the thoughts and feelings of others
· Keep confidentiality
· Tuition of $340 per year (Some financial aid is available.)
How can I find out more?
Visit the EfM website to look at sample lessons and learn more about the history of the Education for Ministry program. To find out more about EfM at Good Shepherd, emailt Dale Chapman, EfM Diocesan Coordinator, in the parish office or phone her at 859-252-1744.
When does EfM begin?
Good Shepherd's group will meet in Monday evenings from 6:00 to 8:30 beginning on September 12. Enrollments must be completed so that materials may be ordered by the end of August.

Celebrate Abby Clayton and St. Agnes' House You are invited to an Open House at St. Agnes' House on Saturday, August 20, from 1 to 3 p.m. For her Girl Scout Gold Award, our own Abby Clayton redid their basement and made it into a decorated recreation room. Good Shepherd is hosting this event for the diocese and we need donations of snacks and drinks. Take a moment to stop in the Loggia and sign up to provide something.
Abby, daughter of Kim Edwards and Thomas Clayton, is very active at Good Shepherd and started volunteering at St. Agnes' House after being assigned there during her first 30 Hour Famine. She continues volunteering there on a regular basis. Abby raised the funds, hired the electricians and carpenters and did the painting and other work herself for this renovation project. Let's show our appreciation for her accomplishment!
