From the Interim Rector

Greetings!Ron Pogue Photo 2

The world described in the Bible's first book is one in which characters were understood to walk and converse with God and who received dreams from God that shaped their lives and even resulted in the salvation of others. God-given dreams take time to mature in us and for their full meaning to become clear.  READ MORE .

I'll see you in Church!

Music Notes

Sheet music

As the choir is in recess for the month of August for a well-deserved break, our services rely on congregational leadership for the hymns and the service music. The organ voluntaries represent the work of Baroque composer Dieterich Buxtehude, whose successful career included serving as organist for the Marienkirche in Lübeck, Germany. Buxtehude, whose present day fame is due chiefly to his having been a strong influence to a young J.S. Bach, was an icon for the north German Baroque style, particularly in his stylus phantasticus inspired works (i.e., fantasy-style, frequent complete cadences within a work, and the overall feeling that the work is being improvised on the spot). Buxtehude's canzonas are imitative works, and like his fugues, have clearly delineated sections instead of flowing seamlessly from start to finish (as compared to the fugues of J.S. Bach).  Buxtehude once offered his church position to the young J.S. Bach if he would marry his daughter, as was tradition at the Marienkirche. Bach declined and decided to marry his own second cousin instead!

Sunday's hymns are among the mainstays of the Anglican repertory. Hymn 428 is a paraphrase of Canticle 12, A Song of Creation. The tune was printed anonymously in Dublin in 1749, hence its name Irish. The book would have been lost to history if a single copy had not been preserved at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, and it is remarkable that this obscure source produced a tune of such strength and individuality. Hymn 414 is also a paraphrased text, that of Psalm 145. The poet Richard Mant was clearly inspired by the vocabulary and style of Charles Wesley. "Thy might, all might excelling" recalls Wesley's "Love divine, all loves excelling."  The tune Stuttgart is very old, appearing in its original form around 1353. Its fame skyrocketed after being harmonized by Henry John Gauntlett (and not by W.H. Havergal, as incorrectly printed in our Hymnal) and included in the first edition of Hymns Ancient & Modern in 1861.

Let's Pipe Up Logo

The Campaign for a New Organ for Good Shepherd

The campaign you've been hearing about to raise $1.4 million to replace our ailing pipe organ gets underway this week. You will be receiving a letter from Dr. George Zack, chair of the campaign committee, inviting you to "Pipe Up" by making a pledge. Contributions can be spread over a 36 month period, starting in September. However, the campaign leadership points out that those 36 months touch four tax years; therefore, we are encouraged to give prayerful consideration to a pledge equal to or greater than the amount of our regular annual contribution.

Dr. Zack and Organist/Choirmaster John Linker, along with Organ Committee members Joe Jones and John Bloomfield, have prepared a presentation to demonstrate and explain the need for this undertaking. They have scheduled three opportunities for you to hear the presentation in the Nave: Sunday, August 7, after the 10 a.m. service and after the 5 p.m. service, and Sunday, August 14, between the two morning services.

All the members of the Vestry, Rector Nominating Committee, Organ Committee, and Capital Campaign Committee made their pledges in early June. Other parish leaders who were next contacted have also made leadership commitments. The total amount pledged as we go to press is $534,677. Our objective is to secure pledges for the additional $865,323 by the end of September.

Please read Dr. Zack's letter carefully, attend one of the presentations, and "Pipe Up" by making your pledge of financial support.

Grounskeeping Helpers Needed
Groundskeeping Helpers Needed
Do you have landscaping experience or just enjoy working in your own yard? Good Shepherd needs you! We are looking for parishioners interested in gardening who could be called on as or when needed for yard work days a few times each year. This could be jobs like planting leftover bulbs in the courtyard after Easter to weeding flowerbeds. You would be a valuable part of ensuring the church grounds remain as beautiful as everyone expects. Call the church office at 252-1744 or e-mail Cindy McKee to indicate your interest.

Rector Nominating Committee Progress Report
The Nominating Committee is very happy to report that we have now received names for the Rector position at Good Shepherd. Candidates have come to us through nomination, application, as well as through computer match, a system which matches the needs of our parish with the skills of available clergy.

All names we have received have been preliminarily approved by the Bishop to continue the process. We are now entering into the active process of mutual discernment. Because the search and naming of a new rector is a call and not a hire, everyone involved throughout the process is committed to critical reflection and prayer for guidance and direction. We hope and ask that you also spend time in prayer for a fruitful and rewarding transition.
Nominating Committee
We as a committee are searching for someone with the right skills and competencies that will allow us to meet our goals and overcome our challenges. We will carefully review each candidate's skills with our needs and vision for moving Good Shepherd forward.

At this point, all candidates have been mailed a letter acknowledging our
receipt of their name, along with our parish brochure and a list of questions to answer so that we may get to know them better. Upon receiving answers to those questions, we will begin to narrow down our list of candidates and work more closely with those who emerge as compatible and notable matches. Our goal is to progress to this next step by the beginning of September.

At this point we are entering a confidential portion of the process for the protection of those interested in the position. We as a Nominating Committee will remain open and transparent about the process, but we must withhold any specific information about any candidate. As always, we appreciate your trust and prayers throughout this important journey.

Thank you for your support!

Almighty God, giver of every good gift: Look graciously on your Church, and so guide the minds of those who shall choose a rector for this parish, that we may receive a faithful pastor, who will care for your people and equip us for our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Diocese of Lexington Arms
News from the Diocese of Lexington
Many things are happening as the diocese prepares for our Bishop Stacy Sauls' departure at the beginning of September. The Standing Committee has been hard at work planning for coverage of our diocese and the election of a new bishop. We are fortunate to have such a capable and experienced Standing Committee serving at this time--The Rev. Bob Sessum, The Rev. Dr. Jan Cottrell, The Rev. Chris Arnold, Austin Tuning, Kevin Shoupe, and Duncan Hart. As we move through this diocesan time of transition and the calling of a new bishop, expect to receive regular communication regarding their work. An easy way to stay informed about all the latest developments is to sign up for the Diolex Link, a weekly e-mail newsletter. Go to www.diolex.org and enter your e-mail address in the box provided on the upper left side of the screen.

The farewell celebration for Bishop Sauls will be held on Saturday, August 27. The event will begin at 11 a.m. with a special liturgy at Christ Church Cathedral. Immediately following the worship, there will be an outdoor BBQ, reception, music, and presentations at Mission House. Additional details will be forthcoming on the diocesan web page.

We also need your help in saying goodbye to Bishop Sauls. As an expression of our appreciation and in thanksgiving for his life and ministry, you are invited to contribute to a purse for the restoration of the earthquake-damaged Holy Trinity Cathedral in Haiti. Please make your checks payable to the Diocese of Lexington, memo Sauls/Rebuild our Church in Haiti Gift.

United Thank Offering
United Thank Offering
Thanks to all of you who expressed your thankfulness for God's blessings by contributing to the United Thank Offering. You are a blessing to all of those with serious human needs and those who are trying to ease the pain of others. Good Shepherd contributed $105 during the UTO spring ingathering.

Don't Send Your Pledge on Vacation!

Summer is Here
...and many Good Shepherd parishioners are heading off to distant places. However, most of the expenses of our church are ongoing--salaries, insurance and utility bills have to be paid year round. To help us stay current on our expenses, please try to stay current on your pledge throughout the summer months.

You can, of course, prepay your pledge. You might also consider setting up an automatic debit to your checking account for either the summer or the rest of the year. And don't forget that you can now go to the Good Shepherd web page or click the online giving button at the start of this newsletter and pay your pledge online.

For more information about automatic bank draft, online giving or any other financial issue, please contact Parish Administrator Dale Chapman. Then go on vacation knowing that your church is being taken care of while you're gone.
