Music Notes
Sunday's Opening Voluntary represents the work of Louis Marchand, who was the leading virtuoso of France of his time. Like many French Baroque composers, Marchand wrote several books of organ music for liturgical use (livres d'orgue) with individual movements titled to indicate the registration to be used, such as Grand Jeu (full organ without mixtures), Jeu doux (soft stops), plein jeu (a principal chorus with mixtures) and so on. In 1717 Marchand was to have been in a competition with J.S. Bach in Dresden, but when Marchand didn't turn up, Bach won by default. The Closing Voluntary comes from Bach's Orgelbüchlein (Little Organ Book), which he started compiling around 1714. As Bach did with so many other forms, he elevated the short organ chorale to a level of excellence never previously achieved.
Sunday's Anthem is an arrangement of the Irish melody St. Columba by English composer Edward C. Bairstow. Bairstow was organist of York Minster, and was succeeded there by his student Francis Jackson. The story of Hymn 523 is rooted in the Second World War. The tune was composed on a Sunday morning in 1941 by Canon Cyril Vincent Taylor, a priest who was Assistant to the Head of Religious Broadcasting of the BBC in their wartime headquarters in Abbot's Leigh, a village near Bristol, England. The tune was written as an alternative to the more familiar tune (found at Hymn 522), which was also the tune used for the German national anthem (Deutschland, Deutschland uber alles), and therefore not politically acceptable during WWII.

Loaves and Fishes Sunday, July 31 "You give them something to eat."
This Sunday we will read St. Matthew's account of the feeding of the multitude (Matthew 14:13-21). Jesus had been teaching and healing people all day. Late in the day, when the disciples proposed sending them away to the villages so they could buy food, Jesus said, "They need not go away; you give them something to eat."
The disciples protested that in all that crowd there were only five loaves and two fish. J esus took them, blessed them, distributed them, and the people ate until their hunger was satisfied. Matthew tells us that after the meal the disciples collected 12 baskets of leftover pieces.
The retelling of this amazing story provides us with an opp ortunity to extend the feeding of the multitude to th ose who have hungers in our mission field. We have been collecting food and funds for the pantry at St. Agnes' House during the month of July. This Sunday, we will bring that campaign to a conclusion as we observe "Loaves and Fishes Sunday."
St. Agnes' House, a hospitality ministry of the Diocese of Lexington, provides lodging for patients and caregivers seeking treatment for very serious illnesses in Lexington medical care facilities who cannot afford to rent a hotel room for the duration of their treatment. The cost at St. Agn es' House is $10 per night, although no one is ever turned away due to their inability to pay.
Please make a special offering for St. Agnes' House on Su nday, July 31. Your gift will be used to purchase food for the pantry and to pay utility bills. Be sure to identify your contribution for "St. Agnes' House" on the memo line of your check. You may also make your contribution online by clicking here.

 It Makes Our Hearts Glad...
...that the Good Shepherd Day School completed another successful year of summer day camp.
...that Julia Villemuer was invited to join the National Honor Society for college students after completing her freshman year at Furman University with an A in every class both semesters.
"It Makes Our Hearts Glad" provides a way for members and friends to strengthen the fabric of our community by sharing good news or offer affirmations. Parish Office Update
Parish Secretary Cindy McKee now has a hard cast on her fractured right foot, making it unsafe to drive an automobile. She will be unable to return to work for at least another month. But, the good news is she is now working from home a few hours per week.
Angelia (Angel) McGillivray will be working part time at Good Shepherd temporarily while Cindy recovers. Angel is currently the Office Manager for Church of the Resurrection in Nicholasville. She works there part time. Her husband, James, works for IBM from home where he can take breaks and play with their 2-year-old lab mix, Daisy Mae. Angel enjoys traveling and driving the church bus on mission trips with the Youth Group at Resurrection. Angel has two children, Emily, who is 18 and will be attending Sewanee in the Fall, and Robert, who will be junior at Dunbar High School.
A big thank you to all the dedicated office helpers who also give their time each week to assist with everything that goes on at Good Shepherd--Judi Woodford, Nancy Jackson, Janie Catron, Barbara Groves, Erin Young, Leslie McCoskey, Leeann Murphy, Lori Martin and Bob Gibson.

Don't Send Your Pledge on Vacation!

...and many Good Shepherd parishioners are heading off to distant places. However, most of the expenses of our church are ongoing--salaries, insurance and utility bills have to be paid year round. To help us stay current on our expenses, please try to stay current on your pledge throughout the summer months.
You can, of course, prepay your pledge. You might also consider setting up an automatic debit to your checking account for either the summer or the rest of the year. And don't forget that you can now go to the Good Shepherd web page or click the online giving button at the start of this newsletter and pay your pledge online.
For more information about automatic bank draft, online giving or any other financial issue, please contact Parish Administrator Dale Chapman. Then go on vacation knowing that your church is being taken care of while you're gone.
