From the Interim Rector

Greetings!Ron Pogue Photo 2

We can get lost in our search by looking for God "too high up and too far away." Jesus' parables call us to look at things in a new way and discover the abundant life we've been looking for all along right under our noses.

Amen.

Important News from Your Rector Nominating CommitteeGS Logo Green Type
The Nominating Committee is extremely pleased to announce that we have reached a milestone in our search for a new rector for our parish. On June 22, the position was officially declared open, which was eight days ahead of schedule! For the next six weeks, we will be receiving nominations for candidates. Those interested in pursuing this call can move forward through self-nomination or by being nominated (and agreeing to that nomination) by another person. If you are interested in nominating a potential candidate, please click here to learn more about the process.

You can also click here to see our parish brochure, which was recently approved by the Vestry and Bishop. This brochure is an important piece of information that will be included in a larger packet and sent to each candidate.

As always, thank you for your continued prayers and support throughout this important journey. We will be sure to update everyone with our progress very soon. Thank you again!

Music NotesMusic Notes

This morning's Voluntaries are the work of German Romantic composer Josef Rheinberger.  He wrote twenty organ sonatas, which are considered the greatest contribution to that genre since Mendelssohn.  Though harmonically Romantic in nature, his Sonatas are an obvious bow to Baroque counterpoint, and are certainly challenging to play.  Hymn 388 is one of our old beloved "classic" hymns, which first appeared in the 1871 Hymnal.  The text is a metrical version of Ps. 104, which first appeared in London in 1833.  The tune was first attributed to William Croft, then to G.F. Handel, and has since graced the "anonymous" list. Regardless of who actually wrote the tune, the popularity throughout its history has been phenomenal.  Since about 1750 it has been in almost every major hymnbook in the English-speaking world.  Second only to Old 100th, it was the tune most frequently found on English organ barrels in the period of their widespread use (ca. 1790 to 1860). Hymn 609 is an interesting pairing between text and tune.  Written on the plight of the poor, especially in American cities, this text still speaks with intensity to contemporary Americans homelessness occurs.  This early 20th century text first appeared in The Methodist Hymnal in 1905 and The Hymnal in 1916.  The tune is by William Gardiner, an amateur musician who lived in Leicester, England.  He was an enthusiastic admirer of Beethoven and reportedly introduced the first of the master's works ever heard in England as early as 1794.  For many years it was thought that this tune came from one of Beethoven's works, but no such direct source has ever been determined.  In the 1916 printing of The Hymnal the tune name was changed from Beethoven to Gardiner.

Support St. Agnes' House in July
Support St. Agnes' House in July
St. Agnes' House, a hospitality ministry of the Diocese of Lexington, provides lodging for patients and caregivers seeking treatment for very serious illnesses in Lexington medical care facilities who cannot afford to rent a hotel room for the duration of their treatment. The cost at St. Agnes' House is $10 per night, although no one is ever turned away due to their inability to pay.

This wonderful ministry depends on the generosity of those of us in the diocese. Starting July 1, you will find a table in the Loggia where you can simply walk by and grab a Post-It Note. Each note will have one item on it that you can attach to your grocery list and pick up at your leisure. Return the item to the container by the table where you picked up your note by July 31. If it's easier for you to write a check instead of shop, simply make the check payable to Good Shepherd with St. Agnes' House on the memo line. Gifts in any amount are welcome and will go toward the monthly utilities expense at St. Agnes' House.

Don't send your pledge on vacation!

Summer is Here
...and many Good Shepherd parishioners are heading off to distant places. However, most of the expenses of our church are ongoing--salaries, insurance and utility bills have to be paid year round. To help us stay current on our expenses, please try to stay current on your pledge throughout the summer months.

You can, of course, prepay your pledge. You might also consider setting up an automatic debit to your checking account for either the summer or the rest of the year. And don't forget that you can now go to the  Good Shepherd web page or click the online giving button at the start of this newsletter and pay your pledge online.

For more information about automatic bank draft, online giving or any other financial issue, please contact Parish Administrator Dale Chapman. Then go on vacation knowing that your church is being taken care of while you're gone.
