From the Interim Rector
Greetings!
The Responsorial Psalm for next Sunday is Psalm 139: 1-11, 22-23 (BCP). It is, in my mind, one of the most lyrical and poetic passages in the entire canon of scripture. In addition to its loveliness, it deals with a profound and humbling truth: God knows me better than I know myself. READ MORE.
I'll see you in Church!

Important News from Your Rector Nominating Committee
The Nominating Committee is extremely pleased to announce that we have reached a milestone in our search for a new rector for our parish. On June 22, the position was officially declared open, which was eight days ahead of schedule! For the next six weeks, we will be receiving nominations for candidates. Those interested in pursuing this call can move forward through self-nomination or by being nominated (and agreeing to that nomination) by another person. If you are interested in nominating a potential candidate, please click here to learn more about the process.
You can also click here to see our parish brochure, which was recently approved by the Vestry and Bishop. This brochure is an important piece of information that will be included in a larger packet and sent to each candidate. As always, thank you for your continued prayers and support throughout this important journey. We will be sure to update everyone with our progress very soon. Thank you again!

Music Notes
This Sunday morning's Voluntaries include one transcription and one piece of "legitimate" organ music. Samuel Barber's Adagio is one of the most famous works from modern 20th century repertoire. Barber took a keen interest in the music of J.S. Bach, through whose works he gained an appreciation for intricate counterpoint. Though he stuck with no one particular compositional style, Barber distinguished himself as a melodist; almost all of his works have at least one beautiful and memorable tune. Adagio for Strings began its life as the second movement of his String Quartet, Op. 11, composed in 1936 while Barber was spending a summer in Europe. Barber is known to have been disappointed by many other arrangements of this piece published by G. Schirmer, such as the organ transcriptiont by William Strickland heard this morning (too bad!), but he did himself transcribe the piece in 1967 for eight-part choir set to the text of the Agnus Dei. Wir glauben all' an einen Gott by J.S. Bach, heard for the closing voluntary, is Bach's "Credo Fugue." In 1739 J.S. Bach published his first organ collection for public consumption, Clavierübung III, a collection abounding with Trinitarian references (eg., there are 27 pieces: 3x3x3). Wir glauben is a fugue in five voices, the subject of which is derived from the German hymn sung with the text of the Nicene Creed.
The Anthem by Eleanor Daley is a setting of George Herbert's (Welsh-born Anglican priest) glorious text, "King of Glory, King of Peace." The text was first published in 1633 and entitled "Praise." Though such verbal precision ("utmost art") may seem at odds with the homely image such as "the cream of all my heart," Herbert's achievement here is not consistency but comprehensiveness, resulting in an almost Romantic exuberance of feeling and a quite cerebral intensity of thought. A native of Ontario, Canada, Eleanor Daley is director of music at Fairlawn Avenue United Church, Toronto, Ontario.
Like the Anthem, the tune for Hymn 600 is also Canadian in origin. The tune name Bellwoods honors the Toronto street that passes St Matthias' Church, where the composer James Hopkirk began and ended his career as an organist; his mother's baptism had begun the parish register. He wrote the tune for the Canadian Anglican Book of Common Praise (1938) for use with "Best be the tie that binds." The tune is basically diatonic in structure with a flexible use or rhythm, allowing for the use of two five-beat measures at the end of the tune while the others are all of four beats.
Hymn 344 is universally popular because of its AAB form in which melodic and rhythmic factors are repeated and accompanied by its simple and pleasing harmonies. The tune is typical of Mediterranean popular music that for several centuries has tended towards melodies in parallel thirds. It was originally used with the Latin text O sanctissima, O piissima, Dulcis virgo Maria.

Support St. Agnes' House in July
St. Agnes' House, a hospitality ministry of the Diocese of Lexington, provides lodging for patients and caregivers seeking treatment for very serious illnesses in Lexington medical care facilities who cannot afford to rent a hotel room for the duration of their treatment. The cost at St. Agnes' House is $10 per night, although no one is ever turned away due to their inability to pay.
This wonderful ministry depends on the generosity of those of us in the diocese. Starting July 1, you will find a table in the Loggia where you can simply walk by and grab a Post-It Note. Each note will have one item on it that you can attach to your grocery list and pick up at your leisure. Return the item to the container by the table where you picked up your note by July 31. If it's easier for you to write a check instead of shop, simply make the check payable to Good Shepherd with St. Agnes' House on the memo line. Gifts in any amount are welcome and will go toward the monthly utilities expense at St. Agnes' House.

Don't send your pledge on vacation!

...and many Good Shepherd parishioners are heading off to distant places. However, most of the expenses of our church are ongoing--salaries, insurance and utility bills have to be paid year round. To help us stay current on our expenses, please try to stay current on your pledge throughout the summer months.
You can, of course, prepay your pledge. You might also consider setting up an automatic debit to your checking account for either the summer or the rest of the year. And don't forget that you can now go to the Good Shepherd web page or click the online giving button at the start of this newsletter and pay your pledge online.
For more information about automatic bank draft, online giving or any other financial issue, please contact Parish Administrator Dale Chapman. Then go on vacation knowing that your church is being taken care of while you're gone.
