Important News from Your Rector Nominating Committee
The Nominating Committee is extremely pleased to announce that we have reached a milestone in our search for a new rector for our parish. On June 22, the position was officially declared open, which was eight days ahead of schedule! For the next six weeks, we will be receiving nominations for candidates. Those interested in pursuing this call can move forward through self-nomination or by being nominated (and agreeing to that nomination) by another person. If you are interested in nominating a potential candidate, please click here to learn more about the process.
You can also click here to see our parish brochure, which was recently approved by the Vestry and Bishop. This brochure is an important piece of information that will be included in a larger packet and sent to each candidate. As always, thank you for your continued prayers and support throughout this important journey. We will be sure to update everyone with our progress very soon. Thank you again!

Music Notes

LEVAS 111 is the same Hymn as 636 in the Hymnal apart from a couple differences. The LEVAS version is a semitone higher (in E-flat) and uses the peculiar word Ebenezer in the second stanza (in reference to 1 Samuel 7:12). The text was written by Robert Robinson in 1758 for Whitsunday and published in London the following year. The tune has an interesting history. Originally an early shape-note tune (first published 1813), it was in 4/4 time entitled Hallelujah and printed with the present text. It later appeared in 1831 titled Good Shepherd and linked with the text "Let thy kingdom, blessed Savior." Another version of the tune appeared in 1832 named Female Pilgrim. In 1842 it appeared again under the title Good Shepherd. In 1852 it appeared as its current name of Nettleton, possibly to honor Asahel Nettleton, a well known evangelist who compiled a collection of texts (Village Hymns for Social Worship, 1824), which included "Come, thou fount of every blessing." Since the tunebok designed to accompany that volume, Zion's Harp (1824) did not contain that tune, it remains a mystery how Nettleton's name became attached to this tune at this point in its history, but for whatever reason the name stuck.
Hymn 296 is a relaively new hymn that helps satisfy the Church's need for baptismal hymnody created by the restoration of this sacramental rite to its historic and central position in the life of a congregation. The text was written by John Geyer, a British Congregational minister and New Testament scholar, while he was a tutor at Chestnut College, Cambridge. At that time Cambridge University was on the forefront of producing "living cells" (the "baby in the test tube"). The hymn attempted to illustrate the Christian doctrine of baptism in relation to those experiments. It was matched with the tune Engelberg, composed in 1904 by Charles Villiers Stanford for the text "For all the saints, who from their labors rest." Two years later Ralph Vaughan Williams's Sine Nomine threw Stanford's tune into the shade. The tune was resurrected in our American Hymnal 1940, and has become increasingly popular since that time. This is one of only two tunes in The Hymnal 1982 that retain the use of the "Amen." This was necessary to preserve the musical integrity of the setting, in which the music of the Amen serves as the final cadence of the tune. The other instance occurs with the tune MacDougall (403) where the music of the "Amen" is also essential to the setting.

Support St. Agnes' House in July
St. Agnes' House, a hospitality ministry of the Diocese of Lexington, provides lodging for patients and caregivers seeking treatment for very serious illnesses in Lexington medical care facilities who cannot afford to rent a hotel room for the duration of their treatment. The cost at St. Agnes' House is $10 per night, although no one is ever turned away due to their inability to pay.
This wonderful ministry depends on the generosity of those of us in the diocese. Starting July 1, you will find a table in the Loggia where you can simply walk by and grab a Post-It Note. Each note will have one item on it that you can attach to your grocery list and pick up at your leisure. Return the item to the container by the table where you picked up your note by July 31. If it's easier for you to write a check instead of shop, simply make the check payable to Good Shepherd with St. Agnes' House on the memo line. Gifts in any amount are welcome and will go toward the monthly utilities expense at St. Agnes' House.

Don't send your pledge on vacation!

...and many Good Shepherd parishioners are heading off to distant places. However, most of the expenses of our church are ongoing--salaries, insurance and utility bills have to be paid year round. To help us stay current on our expenses, please try to stay current on your pledge throughout the summer months.
You can, of course, prepay your pledge. You might also consider setting up an automatic debit to your checking account for either the summer or the rest of the year. And don't forget that you can now go to the Good Shepherd web page or click the online giving button at the start of this newsletter and pay your pledge online.
For more information about automatic bank draft, online giving or any other financial issue, please contact Parish Administrator Dale Chapman. Then go on vacation knowing that your church is being taken care of while you're gone.
