Our new curate, The Rev. Dominic Moore, begins his duties at The Church of the Good Shepherd today.  He will preach at all three services on Sunday, July 10.

 

A curate is a person who is invested with the care or cure (cura) of souls of a parish. In this sense "curate" correctly means a parish priest but in English-speaking countries a curate is usually an assistant to the parish priest. The duties or office of a curate are called a curacy (as the office of a president is a presidency).  In the Episcopal Church, the position of curate is designed to give  newly ordained persons the chance to perform pastoral ministries before they are out on their own in charge of their own parish.

Dominic is a native of South Carolina.  He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York with honors in religious studies.  Dominic has just completed his Master of Divinity degree at Church Divinity School of the Pacific.  He was awarded the Heaton/Franks Prize in Religious Studies and is a recipient of an Excellence in Ministry Scholarship.  Dominic was ordained Deacon on June 18 and is looking forward to being ordained Priest later this year.

Dominic also has experience in web design and journalism.  His passionate about his vocation and is looking forward to joining us at Good Shepherd.  Pastoral care and evangelism are the primary areas assigned to him in this curacy but he will have a wide variety of duties.

Jesse, Dominic's wife, a native of New York, is a high school history teacher.  She hold a degree from Hobart and William Smith Colleges and a Master of Education degree from Converse College.  Jesse has also worked as a secretary in a law firm.  While she is waiting for a teaching position in Lexington, Jesse has agreed to work temporarily at Good Shepherd as substitute for our secretary, Cindy McKee, who is recovering from an automobile accident.  You can reach Jesse at jessewmoore@gmail.com.
