From the Interim Rector

Greetings!Ron Pogue Photo 2

Liberty.  It's a word we hear a lot around the Fourth of July every year.  People of faith - any faith - will look to the teachings of their faith for guidance in the decisions liberty permits them to make.  What should I do with the freedom I have to exercise my will and from coercion to act against my will?  How does my relationship with God influence the way I express the liberty that has been made possible for me and my neighbor?  READ MORE

.

On Sunday at the 10:00 a.m. service, we will Baptize Charlotte Sophia, daughter of January Haile and Aaron Rodocker.

I'll see you in Church!

The Third Sunday after Pentecost

Collect

O God, you have taught us to keep all your commandments by loving you and our neighbor: Grant us the grace of your Holy Spirit, that we may be devoted to you with our whole heart, and united to one another with pure affection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Important News from Your Rector Nominating CommitteeGS Logo Green Type
The Nominating Committee is extremely pleased to announce that we have reached a milestone in our search for a new rector for our parish. On June 22, the position was officially declared open, which was eight days ahead of schedule! For the next six weeks, we will be receiving nominations for candidates. Those interested in pursuing this call can move forward through self-nomination or by being nominated (and agreeing to that nomination) by another person. If you are interested in nominating a potential candidate, please click here to learn more about the process.

You can also click here to see our parish brochure, which was recently approved by the Vestry and Bishop. This brochure is an important piece of information that will be included in a larger packet and sent to each candidate.

As always, thank you for your continued prayers and support throughout this important journey. We will be sure to update everyone with our progress very soon. Thank you again!

Music Notes

Sheet music
In this morning's liturgy ecclesiastical life meets national life as Independence Day is tomorrow 7/4.  Hymn 718 gained widespread popularity within the first decade of its publication in the 1892 Hymnal and now enjoys ecumenical acceptance and still ranks high in the esteem of many congregations.  Although American in origin, this hymn of praise and prayer for peace does not refer to a specific nation; it can be sung by any person of any country.  This majestic tune was composed for use with this text by George W. Warren for use in 1892 in New York's St. Thomas' Church where he was organist.  Prior to this tune, the text "God of our fathers" was sung to the tune Russian Hymn.

This morning's Anthem, though English in origin, also pays no reference to a specific country and therefore can be sung by any person on God's Earth.  Cecil Spring Rice initially wrote this text in 1908 and then revised it in 1912 while serving as English ambassador here in the United States under President Woodrow Wilson.  In 1921 Gustav Holst "fitted" a theme from The Planets (Jupiter) to this poem, and thus a great patriotic work was born.  "Another country" that is mentioned in the second verse is in reference to heaven.

The text of Hymn 719 was altered three times by the poet in response to criticism, and was revised yet again for inclusion in our Hymnal to make it more responsive to contemporary attitudes of justice.  The original version was written in the summer of 1892.  Following a summer school at Colorado Springs, Katherine Bates and other instructors celebrated with a trip to the top of Pike's Peak.  As Miss Bates recounted in 1918, "it was then and there, as I was looking out over the sea-like expanse of fertile country spreading away so far under those ample skies, that the opening lines of the hymn floated into my mind."  The tune Materna was originally composed for the text "O mother dear, Jerusalem" by Samuel A. Ward.  In 1912 Materna was matched with "O beautiful for spacious skies," which gained great popularity during World War I, and the matching has been inseparable ever since.

This morning's Voluntaries feature American composers.  "Carillon" uses a motive that is reminiscent of strains sounding from bell towers, but with subtle jazz harmonies that are the hallmark of Leo Sowerby's music.  "The Stars and Stripes Forever," is a favorite of the American public by bandmaster John Philip Sousa.

Banns of Marriage
Banns of Marriage
We publish the Banns of Marriage between Rebecca Lee Tarrant and Jonathan Keith Miller. If any of you know just cause why they should not be joined together in Holy Matrimony, you are bidden to declare it. This is the second time of asking.

Hearts Glad
It Makes Our Hearts Glad...

...that our Curate, Dominic Moore, officially begins his duties on
July 5.

...that our youth and their leaders returned home safely after a mission trip to Chicago and shared their story with us last Sunday.

"It Makes Our Hearts Glad" provides a way for members and friends to strengthen the fabric of our community by sharing good news or offer affirmations. The word "glad" is derived from Old and Middle English words meaning shining or bright. Add to the weekly "Glad Report" by email or by calling 859.252.1744.

Support St. Agnes' House in July
Support St. Agnes' House in July
St. Agnes' House, a hospitality ministry of the Diocese of Lexington, provides lodging for patients and caregivers seeking treatment for very serious illnesses in Lexington medical care facilities who cannot afford to rent a hotel room for the duration of their treatment. The cost at St. Agnes' House is $10 per night, although no one is ever turned away due to their inability to pay.

This wonderful ministry depends on the generosity of those of us in the diocese. Starting July 1, you will find a table in the Loggia where you can simply walk by and grab a Post-It Note. Each note will have one item on it that you can attach to your grocery list and pick up at your leisure. Return the item to the container by the table where you picked up your note by July 31. If it's easier for you to write a check instead of shop, simply make the check payable to Good Shepherd with St. Agnes' House on the memo line. Gifts in any amount are welcome and will go toward the monthly utilities expense at St. Agnes' House.

Good Shepherd Calendar
Stay Informed
The web page calendar has the most up to date information about everything happening at Good Shepherd.

Summer is Here...

Summer is Here
...and many Good Shepherd parishioners are heading off to distant places. However, most of the expenses of our church are ongoing--salaries, insurance and utility bills have to be paid year round. To help us stay current on our expenses, please try to stay current on your pledge throughout the summer months.

You can, of course, prepay your pledge. You might also consider setting up an automatic debit to your checking account for either the summer or the rest of the year. And don't forget that you can now go to the Good Shepherd web page or click the online giving button at the start of this newsletter and pay your pledge online.

For more information about automatic bank draft, online giving or any other financial issue, please contact Parish Administrator Dale Chapman. Then go on vacation knowing that your church is being taken care of while you're gone.
