From the Interim Rector

Greetings!Ron Pogue Photo 2

When Gay was out for her morning walk yesterday, she discovered this amazing mushroom growing on the base of a tree in our neighborhood. She took a series of photographs of it with her iPhone and today she took me to see it. It is a truly beautiful work of art! I wondered what type of mushroom it   READ MORE.

The Second Sunday after Pentecost

Collect

Almighty God, you have built your Church upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone: Grant us so to be joined together in unity of spirit by their teaching, that we may be made a holy temple acceptable to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Important News from Your Rector Nominating Committee
The Nominating Committee is extremely pleased to announce that we have reached a milestone in our search for a new rector for our parish. On June 22, the position was officially declared open, which was eight days ahead of schedule! For the next six weeks, we will be receiving nominations for candidates. Those interested in pursuing this call can move forward through self-nomination or by being nominated (and agreeing to that nomination) by another person. If you are interested in nominating a potential candidate, please click here to learn more about the process.

You can also click here to see our parish brochure, which was recently approved by the Vestry and Bishop. This brochure is an important piece of information that will be included in a larger packet and sent to each candidate.

As always, thank you for your continued prayers and support throughout this important journey. We will be sure to update everyone with our progress very soon. Thank you again!

Music NotesSheet music
Hymn 525 is a favorite among many Christian denominations, though its origins are Anglican. The text comes from Samuel Stone, a 19th century curate in Windsor, England, and was the ninth hymn in a series of twelve based on themes from the Creed. "The Church's one foundation" was originally in seven stanzas, and was headed, "The Holy Catholic Church: The Communion of Saints. He is the Head of the Body, the Church."  It was matched with the tune Aurelia in 1868. This quintessentially Victorian tune was originally matched with other texts, among them "Jerusalem the golden."

The Anthem by Richard DeLong is a fresh setting of  the beloved text "Just as I am."  The text was written by Charlotte Elliott for her Invalid's Hymn Book in 1836. The text ranks among the most beautiful and popular hymns of the English language and has given rise to many imitations, the best known of which is R.S. Cook's "Just as Thou art, without one trace." Richard DeLong was a promising young composer who lived a tragically short life. An advocate for the performance of new liturgical music, DeLong was born in Mansfield, Ohio, and was most active throughout his professional life around Dallas, Texas.

Hymn 438 has gained a great deal of popularity in recent years. The tune dates from 1919 (The Public School Hymnbook, London), and is named after one of the school houses at Gresham's School, Norfolk, England, where the composer, Walter Greatorex, was Director of Music. Benjamin Britten was one of the distinguished pupils of this school in the early part of the 20th century. The text was written in 1961 by Timothy Dudley-Smith while he was serving the church Pastoral Aid Society, a home missionary society of the Church of England, and is a metrical paraphrase of the Song of Mary (Magnificat).

Both Voluntaries this morning are from the 18th century English Voluntary era from whence these parts of the service gained their names. The term voluntary first appeared in the 16th century designating this music for liturgical use. Both Greene's and Stanley's Voluntaries   are in the typical form of two movements, slow and fast. Chains of suspensions and imitation are prevalent throughout these works. Greene was organist of the Chapel Royal and professor at Cambridge University. Stanley (blind from his youth) studied with Greene and was organist at Temple Church in London.

Hearts Glad
It Makes Our Hearts Glad...
...that our Curate, Dominic Moore, was ordained to the Sacred Order of Deacons in Geneva, New York, on June 18.

...that Anne VanMeter, daughter of George VanMeter and Anne Tsamas, graduated from the University of Mississippi with a BS in Hospitality Management.

...to see Whit Whitaker and Reggie Smith perform in UK's "A Grand Night for Singing."

...that Elizabeth Cox, daughter of Bill and Lucy Cox, made the Dean's List at UK her freshmen year.

"It Makes Our Hearts Glad" provides a way for members and friends to strengthen the fabric of our community by sharing good news or offer affirmations. The word "glad" is derived from Old and Middle English words meaning shining or bright. Add to the weekly "Glad Report" by email or by calling 859.252.1744.

Support St. Agnes' House in July
Support St. Agnes' House in July
St. Agnes' House, a hospitality ministry of the Diocese of Lexington, provides lodging for patients and caregivers seeking treatment for very serious illnesses in Lexington medical care facilities who cannot afford to rent a hotel room for the duration of their treatment. The cost at St. Agnes' House is $10 per night, although no one is ever turned away due to their inability to pay.

This wonderful ministry depends on the generosity of those of us in the diocese. Starting July 1, you will find a table in the Loggia where you can simply walk by and grab a Post-It Note. Each note will have one item on it that you can attach to your grocery list and pick up at your leisure. Return the item to the container by the table where you picked up your note by July 31. If it's easier for you to write a check instead of shop, simply make the check payable to Good Shepherd with St. Agnes' House on the memo line. Gifts in any amount are welcome and will go toward the monthly utilities expense at St. Agnes' House.

Good Shepherd Calendar
Stay Informed
The web page calendar has the most up to date information about everything happening at Good Shepherd.

Summer is Here...Summer is Here
...and many Good Shepherd parishioners are heading off to distant places. However, most of the expenses of our church are ongoing--salaries, insurance and utility bills have to be paid year round. To help us stay current on our expenses, please try to stay current on your pledge throughout the summer months.

You can, of course, prepay your pledge. You might also consider setting up an automatic debit to your checking account for either the summer or the rest of the year. And don't forget that you can now go to the Good Shepherd web page or click the online giving button at the start of this newsletter and pay your pledge online.

For more information about automatic bank draft, online giving or any other financial issue, please contact Parish Administrator Dale Chapman. Then go on vacation knowing that your church is being taken care of while you're gone.
