Greetings!Ron Pogue Photo 2

The Holy Trinity is a doctrine, a teaching, developed over time by the Church as an aspect of the unfolding revelation of God derived from, but not confined to the pages of sacred scripture. The best doctrines are those that speak to deeply felt needs of those who seek God.  READ MORE.

The First Sunday after Pentecost: Trinity Sunday

Collect

Almighty and everlasting God, you have given to us your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of your divine Majesty to worship the Unity: Keep us steadfast in this faith and worship, and bring us at last to see you in your one and eternal glory, O Father; who with the Son and the Holy Spirit live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Music NotesSheet music
On Trinity Sunday we are enriched by music honoring the Holy Trinity.

The text and tune of Hymn 362 have enjoyed a level of appreciation and use that has not wavered since they first appeared together in the initial edition of Hymns Ancient & Modern (1861) and in the music editions of the 1871 Hymnal. This most popular poetry of Bishop Reginald Heber is notable for both its subject matter and its metre. In this hymn the Trinity is worshiped by all "early in the morning" and by "cherubim and seraphim."  Enjoy singing the word "wert" in the second stanza! The music was composed by John Bacchus Dykes, Precentor of Durham Cathedral, specifically for this text.

The Anthem by H.W. Jones also extols the glorious unity of the Trinity. Though the piece is initially set in the key of F major, chromatic alterations take the music in many different directions to portray the three persons of the Trinity. F major gives way to D major for the pious text "three persons praise we evermore..."  F Major is reached again only in the final three measures of the piece to provide closure with the word "unity," tying the work together as a whole.

Hymn 421 is a translation of the 16th century German paraphrase by Nikolaus Decius of the Gloria in excelsis matched with Decius's tune, which is his adaptation of a 10th century plainsong Gloria.
Prayers of the People

This is the Good Shepherd Prayer List. Each day at noon, the persons on this list are lifted up in prayer. Banns of Marriage
Banns of Marriage
We publish the Banns of Marriage between Jennifer Terrell Jarvis and Patrick Anderson Lewis. If any of you know just cause why they should not be joined together in Holy Matrimony, you are bidden to declare it. This is the third and final time of asking.

We publish the Banns of Marriage between Amber Elizabeth Huffman and David Jon Hruska. If any of you know just cause why they should not be joined together in Holy Matrimony, you are bidden to declare it. This is the second time of asking.

Hearts Glad
It Makes Our Hearts Glad...
...to joyfully celebrate Pentecost last Sunday with children in the procession, two baptisms, and cake afterwards.

...to welcome 200 members of the American Guild of Organists to Lexington this past week for evensong, concerts and workshops.

...to welcome Penny Bass, interim director of Good Shepherd Day School, on her first day.

...that ten youth and three adults are leaving Sunday on a mission trip to Chicago for a week of ministry to those in need.

"It Makes Our Hearts Glad" provides a way for members and friends to strengthen the fabric of our community by sharing good news or offer affirmations. The word "glad" is derived from Old and Middle English words meaning shining or bright. Add to the weekly "Glad Report" by email or by calling 859.252.1744.

Thank You!Thank You
Many thanks to all the Good Shepherd people who helped in so many ways to make the reception for the new Deacons such a great success!  Whether it was donating the delicious food, helping in the Cathedral kitchen or just being there giving your support, we couldn't have done it without you. You're greatly appreciated!

Important Date
Vestry Meeting
The next vestry meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 21, at 7 p.m. in the Undercroft. Meetings are open and everyone is welcome to attend.
Mission Trip
Mission Trip to Chicago
Thirteen missioners (10 youth, 3 adults) from Good Shepherd will be on a mission trip to Chicago from June 19-26. This is an incredible chance for them to serve others and live out their baptismal vows. The group will be commissioned Sunday at the 10 a.m. service. Please keep them in your prayers.

Summer is Here...Summer is Here
...and many Good Shepherd parishioners are heading off to distant places. However, most of the expenses of our church are ongoing--salaries, insurance and utility bills have to be paid year round. To help us stay current on our expenses, please try to stay current on your pledge throughout the summer months.

You can, of course, prepay your pledge. You might also consider setting up an automatic debit to your checking account for either the summer or the rest of the year. And don't forget that you can now go to the Good Shepherd web page or click the online giving button at the start of this newsletter and pay your pledge online.

For more information about automatic bank draft, online giving or any other financial issue, please contact Parish Administrator Dale Chapman. Then go on vacation knowing that your church is being taken care of while you're gone.

Support St. Agnes' House in July
Support St. Agnes' House in July
St. Agnes' House, a hospitality ministry of the Diocese of Lexington, provides lodging for patients and caregivers seeking treatment for very serious illnesses in Lexington medical care facilities who cannot afford to rent a hotel room for the duration of their treatment. The cost at St. Agnes' House is $10 per night, although no one is ever turned away due to their inability to pay.

This wonderful ministry depends on the generosity of those of us in the diocese. Starting July 1, you will find a table in the Loggia where you can simply walk by and grab a Post-It Note. Each note will have one item on it that you can attach to your grocery list and pick up at your leisure. Return the item to the container by the table where you picked up your note by July 31. If it's easier for you to write a check instead of shop, simply make the check payable to Good Shepherd with St. Agnes' House on the memo line. Gifts in any amount are welcome and will go toward the monthly utilities expense at St. Agnes' House.
