From the Interim Rector

Greetings!Ron Pogue Photo 2

We have had two large funerals this week at our church.  The church was packed on both occasions.  As I have listened to members of the parish speak of the two wonderful women whose funerals they attended, I was impressed by how difficult this week has been on us as a parish.  We are painfully aware of how important it is for all of us to learn to face death, both our own and that of others about whom we care. Here are some of my reflections on the transition known to us as death.

I'll see you in Church!

The Day of Pentecost: Whitsunday

Collect

O God, who on this day taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Pentecost
Pentecost ~ A Day of Celebration
This Sunday we will celebrate one of the greatest festival days of the
entire church year, Pentecost. All worshipers are invited to play a special part by wearing red and orange clothing to church, to evoke the image of flames. The procession will feature children with red streamers to celebrate the Holy Spirit. Children are asked to meet in the Undercroft at 9:30 a.m. for instructions and streamers.

Refreshments will be served in the Undercroft immediately following the 10 a.m.service.

Music NotesSheet music
The Feast of Pentecost is on of the principal feasts of the church year. As such we are enriched by the celebratory music that is associated with this day.  Bach's lovely chorale prelude on Allein Gott (based on Hymn 421), played for the opening Voluntary, honors the Trinity in many ways. There are three sharps in the key signature and the piece is a "trio," that is, for only three voices.  The right hand plays one voice, the left hand plays another, and the feet yet another. Snippets of the chorale tune provide the material for each of the three voices, and the entire first phrase of the chorale tune is heard in the pedals towards the end of the prelude.  The closing Voluntary is also a work by Bach in the form of a joyous fugue, though set in the "serious" key of A minor. Hymn 225 is one of the most widely used Pentecost hymns in the Church. The tune was composed specifically for this text by Ralph Vaughan Williams for its inclusion in The English Hymnal. The first line of this hymn is from a poem by Venatius Fortunatus, but the remainder of the text is by an unknown author and is found in the York Processional; the earliest extant manuscript containing this text dates from the 14th century. The broad melody of the refrain is admirably suited to being taken up by the whole congregation, while the verses are more difficult rhythmically. The first words of the refrain in the original Latin provide the name of the tune.  Another of Vaughan Williams' fine tunes is sung with Hymn 516. The tune name Down Ampney honors the composer's birthplace. It has a very satisfying rhythmical structure typical of Vaughan Williams, with the poise of longer notes in the short lines and the sweep of the melody in the long lines 3 and 6. The Offertory Anthem is one of the most beloved works of Thomas Tallis, who was active in England's Tudor period. After Henry VIII's (r. 1509-1547) initial reformation (breaking from the Roman Church), Edward VI (r. 1547-1553) made further changes and banished long melismas wherein a single word might take up an entire page of music. Tallis' If ye love me is an example of this reformed style of church music. It is mostly homophonic throughout with only subtle points of imitation.
